If you're someone who loves themselves some arbitrary console performance figures, Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi has you covered. Speaking to VentureBeat, the Gran Turismo creator reckons the latest game in Sony's flagship racing series taps "about 80 percent of the processing power" of the PlayStation 3," adding, "the PS3 hardware has a very high peak performance. The better you manipulate it, the better it performs."
That last quote sounds more like it's about an engine than a console, which isn't surprising given the amount of time Yamauchi spends behind the wheel of the actual supercars from his oft-delayed game. We seriously hope he's not aiming to use 100 percent of the system's potential -- we'd really like GT5 to come out before a child born today is able to drive a real car.

A crappily coded game could easily use up 100%. It's all about optimization. This means close to nothing.

I 100% agree with what you're saying, no pun intended, but I don't think anyone considers Polyphony bad at coding.

Yeah, from a programming standpoint that statement is worthless. He really should say "80% of the PS3's potential" or something.
Incidentally, GT5 is currently using 0% of MY PS3's power, because it's NOT FREAKING OUT YET.
My PS3 is sitting, off, collecting dust as I play Forza 3. PHTHTHBHTHTHTTTTT.

Thank God it's being delayed. I'm low on cash, can't afford to pick up FF13, BC2, GoW3 and GT5 all in the same month.

Sad thing is that when its released there will be some online bug that if you lose a race you'll lose all your cars and credits/cash and they'll claim they are working on a fix and that will take a few years to fix also. UGH! Just release the game already and any other cars in the future will be dlc.

I'm getting really tired of this what game uses what percentage of power crap that goes around everytime an exclusive is releashed. I honestly think its just a quick answer from developers to journalists who have absolutely no idea about game development.

They are already doing 3d. And here's why it's delayed:
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/01/ps3-gran-turismo-5-in-3d-an-unconcinving-demo.ars
Basically, after consumer input at CES, they went back and said: make a 2d option that's quick to switch to, if someone feels strain or boredom or the novelty has warn off; also, let's boost up the dynamics (maybe using that remaining 20%?) so that the 3d looks really movie.
One problem is that 3d in theaters runs at over 100 frames per second. On consoles, with graphics and gameplay as complex as GT5, a game console has to run it at 60 frames per second-- but, that's 30 fps for the left eye, 30 for the right. And there is always the problem with 3d that the glasses dim the experience.
I suspect OLED displays will go far to remedy this but they are costly and rare, right now, so we have to find alternatives, fixes, etc.
I totally am ready for GT5 in 3d, but I know that at only 30 fps per eye, it will become fatiguing soon, why they should have the "switch to 2d" feature-- I'll switch to 3d for the novelty, but in a hot race I need to be able to throw off my glasses and switch over to traditional (and still gorgeous) 2d.

i love how the author of the article makes it seems like the amount of power used isnt important (which it is. look at how the ps3 port of bayonetta came out). so it takes a while to develop, it'll be worth it.
the last paragraph of the article has nothing to do with what the devs of gt5 are trying to get across. almost as if he wants you to hate the game for taking so long to come out and the devs have no idea of what they're talking about.

I think that, Joystiq is being cluttered with Natal news then anything.
80 Percent huh, I wonder how many developers can truly utilize all power of the PS3 before the PS4 comes in.

im a fan of the PS3, dont get me wrong. but after Forza 1, 2, and 3 were released between GT4 and GT5, i really dont care about the series anymore. Forza is great, more options than you'd expect. so why bother watching the release date for a game that keeps getting delayed, and will probably still sound like racing vacuum cleaners.
that and Polyphony pretty much treats its consumers like... well customers. Turn 10 actually treats them like fellow car enthusiasts, and asks them for advance.

Then why waste time posting in an article about Gran Turismo? You see that means you actually do care for the series otherwise you wouldn't have been bothered to post in the first place. You aren't fooling anyone. You might be upset but at the end of the day you'll buy Gran Turismo just like I will.

Wow if u want to complain about a series than maybe you should accutally play it first... dont say u did cause anyone that says the sound quality is bad in gt obviously didnt play the game (or is mentally retarded)
and to prove your retarded your saying that turn 10 treats there customers like real race enthusiasts... REALLY, does that mean that they hold real life racing events for the people that play their game or how about giving you the chance to get ur actual car into their game! DUMBASS!

@Chillski
that shit doesnt matter, thats to get them published in mags with good press. it helps them sell games.
game devs from turn 10 are constantly interacting with the community, and suggestions from the community have already made it into forza 3 (like making a "shifting" motion in cockpit view after the game was released)
if youve played any GT game, and if you actually KNOW cars, you know that most cars in the game dont sound anything like their real life counterparts. its getting better, but nothing shows me that all cars will be shown the same treatment. you obviously have not had a lot of close contact with a diverse catolog of engines. from Italians to Domestics to Japanese and Russian makes, they all sound different.
PS, and yes i guess i do care about the series deep down, i have a lot of great memories about GT1, 2, & 3. i even liked 4, while not quite as much.

Oh, but uncharted 2 maxed out the ps3, so it's a better game right?
Who cares how much power each game takes up? I mean, it's great that they're so good at optimizing for the cell, but you have to finish the game at some point. It's been 3 years since the last console GT game (if you count prologue) and there's no end in sight. This is getting closer and closer to the Duke Nukem Forever scenario where by the time it's nearing release all of the fans will have moved on and the game they've been developing for 5 years will already be outdated. Right now according to both a sizeable fanbase and a large number of critics, Forza 3 is the best racer in the market. Hopefully, GT5 will be better, because at this rate it's coming out a year later than Forza and has been in development for what, 3 times as long? But once it's released, even if it blows all of our minds, who's to say Forza 4 won't come out six months later and be even better?
I really hope GT5 ends up being amazing. But I have my doubts.

You wonder what they did? You ask rhetorically, as if people make these numbers up. IBM and Toshiba (co-producers of the Cell chip-- that's the multi-processor chip in the PS3, der) among others offer a number of analysis programs which show CPU and co-processor (the PS3 has 7, the 360 has... none... but it's main processor is triple-core, so much easier to program) usage, during in-game play. If the usage of ALL the parts is 80%, that's hardcore. That means your programmers are almost totally utilizing all the parallel processing available through Cell architecture. It takes good programming to do this. If you look at a crappy port like Bayonetta (Sega programmers are whimps), they don't even use the co-processors. So if you don't use the co-processors of the PS3's cell, it will look and act worse than the same game programmed on a 3-core processor like 360. Cell takes more work, just like the ps2, with it's two extra processors, took more work in the days of the original Xbox, which ran more than twice the speed of the PS2. Now ask yourself: who's still around, original Xbox, or PS2?

I have no idea what tangent you went on in the end, and your analysis may also be incorrect, anyway.
And you have to keep in mind that even if they're using "80%" of what's available in the PS3, a lot of it could be useless work that could be optimized more. It's a dumb statistic, the way he presented it.

I think they should use the other 20% and increase the speed of the load times.
Loading in general on the ps3 is just horrendous!
I played the demo and they still need more work on the physics.
Forza has the best racing experience to date.

I'm no Sony fan (ps3 seems to be a good piece of kit, though) but wasn't this supposed to be a launch title?
I think they advertised it as a launch title knowing full well that development had just started. The thinking is to get the GT fans to be early adopters of the system.
That is why BC was so important early on. Now, it really does not matter since the PS3 (and 360) each have a huge list of titles available.
I think N did it best with full hardware BC from the get go. Had it then, still does.
No matter, hopefully, for the PS3 owners waiting for their premier racing game, it should be out soon. And it better not suck.
