PS3 Firmware 3.15 becomes mandatory, fixes minor Trophy glitch

Many readers have been sending tips to Joystiq about a new PS3 firmware update. In actuality, this is not a new update at all. Firmware 3.15 was released on December 9th and introduced the ability to play PSP Minis on the PS3. While this update was originally optional, the powers-that-be at Sony are now making it a mandatory update. "We have found out that users will not be able to acquire trophies on some game titles," we were told by a SCEE representative. "Users can avoid this problem by updating the PS3 system to firmware 3.15 and therefore we've made it a mandatory update. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate for your understanding and continued support."

If you haven't updated your PS3 yet, make sure to allocate some time before attempting to jump online to install this mandatory update. You don't want to be late to your MW2 party, do you? [ProTip: Save yourself some time by downloading the update now on a USB flash drive.]

This sucks. I recently lowered the speed of my internet so its going to take forever to download. Thanks for providing the link for the download. Atleast I won't have to stare at the progress screen on my ps3 for an hour.

Yeam use the link, updating via a pc is 20x faster than the ps3.

You're right! Even with my crappy internet, its downloading pretty fast compared to my ps3's speed.

I've got basic internet with the devil (comcast) & my PS3 updates are no more than 10 minutes.

Mine updated in just a few minutes why does everyone make a big deal out of this get a decent router and a decent internet connection and its fast as hell. I almost always get between 1-2 MB/s off PSN.

Why wouldn't it have been mandatory form the beginning?

cause they didn't want to hear all the people saying "3.15 killed my PS3!!!!" right before Christmas and over Christmas break....

No party chat. Just minis and some bug fixes.

I don't understand why any firmware upgrade wouldn't be mandatory.

Well, they do occasionally take a while to download if it's a feature a lot of people want. Plus I like the optional ones cuz it gives me a chance to wait for the mandatory one that will, as a side note, probably fix some stuff with the optional one.

Of course, this story is the exact opposite of my policies, so maybe I should change that.

I updated last month after waiting a few days watching the board to make sure it wasn't another 2.40 fiasco...

I wonder if they made it Mandatory because certain games coming out require it OR if 3.20 is right around the corner

Im pretty sure that every consecutive firmware has the one before included :P

Also, i had to upgrade to 3.15 on release date cause i was having some issues with my trophies, i could not synchronize em, and i wanted to show my Demons Souls trophies :P

yea I know it does...just hoping for something NEW that does something

@UnnXandros ever since I updated to 3.15,I and many others have been having sync issues along with alot of peoples blu-ray drive stop working,so if anybody hasn't updated just wait for 3.20

now any games I had with the trophy feature is inoperable,it won't load AT ALL!

strange...the 3.15 update fixed the syncing issues I had.....but I doubt anyone us goin to hold off for 3.20 if they want to play online....that works fine for people that just use a PS3 as a BD player/Media streaming box tho

the PS3 here has the update that was on the Tekken 6 disc.. 2.8? 3.0? won't get updated again til FFXIII.. she's too interested in KH:FM on her PS2

I get really sick of the constant really long updates. I love the quality of the PS3 hardware, but I sure wish they handled the updates more like the 360.

360 updates are a few mb, ps3's are like 130mb.

Well at least they let you download it via your computer and install it from a flash drive. That way you can sign out and at least still play offline games.

Yes, downloading to USB drive on my computer and then installing in my game system is really what I want to do with my game system. I know the updates are huge, what I'm wondering is why.

I think the reason for this is that for every major ps3 update, they do a total re-write of the firmware. Must be one of their anti-piracy tactics. I gotta say that it has worked well so far.

I just hate the fact that the PS3 requires downloading (long wait) and then installing (more long waiting). The 360 is typically pretty quick to download and install. But I normally just play a game on the other system while one is updating.

I do like the fact that I can use a usbdrive to download the PS3 update, but it still takes awhile to install.

It's because PS3 code is encrypted, it's not even decrypted before it is run, it's decrypted by the processor instruction fetcher.

Encrypted data cannot be usefully differenced nor can it be compressed. So all Sony's patches end up huge.

I expected MS will go to encrypted code with the next generation and I'm interested to see if they can find a solution to this problem.

I have downloaded the major 360 dash updates from my PC from Xbox.com. I burned it on Disc and installed it.

I guess most people don't look to do this because the updates are quick.

That firmware is useless! I downloaded Day 1 thinking how great it will be to play my minis on the ps3 and it still has not happened. I saw the European video on the blog that showed how it works and I have redownloaded all my minis to no avail. Sony has been slacking.

What? All minis are now compatible and playable. Are you sure you are doing it right?

I specifically bought Tetris for my fiance because it was supposed to work with my PS3 after the update. It plays fine on my PSP, but she wants to play on my TV and it's still unplayable! I wish they would get that sorted out already! :(

I went ahead and downloaded it after it came out, back in December.

I don't own a PSP, but I figured I might as well get it out of the way.

I was going to wait until the next firmware update because I don't care about minis. Might still happen, I haven't had a reason to go online with my PS3 in a while.

This update fixed the problem I had with Uncharted 2 not recognizing my Uncharted 1 trophies. Once I updated, it found them and I got my money for my hard earned work!

I have tetris and mahjong(?). Just now redownloaded and still nothing. They should not say all minis will be playable when that is not the case.

how bout they fix the MAJOR trophy "glitch" that makes us do a long freaking sync everytime we check the trophies.......

I had that issue and could not update my trophies for 5 or 6 weeks. Until I DL'ed 3.15. Have you tried it yet?

Downloaded it when it came out, though I had no idea it fixed a glitch at all. Oh well.
