Sure, if you have a game that's not big enough for retail, it's easier to profit with digital distribution, but if you're trying to build a big name (or re-build a big name), the DD audience (on consoles at least) is still too undeveloped. Unless SEGA is conceding that Sonic no longer has the draw to be a retail product

Internet hype can help, or be totally meaningless. That's a wait-and-see thing.

The cost of digital distribution may be less than disc space, but it also limits sales. There are pretty sizeable percentages of both 360 and PS3 users who don't have their consoles hooked up to the internet. A lot of people who do don't like using their bandwidth on downloadable games, and there are a lot of people who straight up refuse to buy games that aren't in boxes. DD is a great way to make a profit for smaller titles but it's a lot more unlikely for the game to sell in the millions (Like NSMBW) when you limit your potential install base to those who buy arcade/psn games.

Either way with physical discs or DD, Sega has a ton of hard work ahead of them to get back the attention of *A LOT* of pissed off Sonic fans.

At one point in time there was a Sonic game based on the Sonic SatAM cartoon. It wasn't quite like normal games, it had a little more strategy to it, switching to different characters. Looked like it was interesting, but it was canned for Sonic 3, I think.

FAIL.

Sonic is supposed to be fast.
That's why he's named "SONIC"

This was a prototype. It was also based on the cartoon show. Had it been made into a real game, I am sure it would have had plenty of fast action parts.

A Sonic the Hedgehog game should contain four characters:

Sonic
Tails
Knuckles
Dr. Robotnik

No others are welcome.

Exactly. Those are the core characters that should always (and ONLY) be part of Sonic games.

Tikal needs her own game. Mystical hippie chicks are an underrepresented minority in games nowadays.

I will admit I am slightly disappointed, if only because my favorite sonic game (sonic games?) is Sonic 3 + sonic and knuckles. Sonic, tails and knuckles all had distinctive play styles without ever feeling like they were taking anything away from the game.

The cast of characters wasn't even one of the biggest problems with post-S3&K Sonic games. I'd gladly play a game with Big the Cat, Rouge the Bat, or even Shadow the Hedgehog if they would just finally get the gameplay right—that is, just the right mix of fast and slow sections with multiple routes and hidden stuff everywhere. I haven't forgotten the "Sonic on rails" gameplay of the more recent 2D Sonic games, so I'm not allowing myself to get excited about this yet.

It took them THIS long to finally get it right?!. Finally a Sonic game about.. Just Sonic, and 2D this time!. Hopefully this is a turn around from their infamous story lines, voice acting, and characters(Well, Knuckles is an exception.. and Dr. Roboknic).

Okay, cool, now you just have to make a good game.

It doesn't matter who is in or who isn't in the game, Sonic is about gameplay.

YES!

Who the hell knew what was going on in Sonic 1? Nobody. Did they care? No.

I actually kinda liked all the side characters... at least Tales and Knuckles in S3/S&K way back in the day. all 3 characters played a little different and had access to different parts of each level, which felt like it added some value to replaying each level 3 times. At least, that's how I felt 10_ years ago?

Wouldn't actually mind $2'ish DLC that added a character or two to the game (and nothing else?) as long as the character added a new game play mechanic to the mix.

only time will tell

I don't understand people's unhealthy obsession with putting Sonic back where he was. Listen, guys: Nobody enjoyed Sonic 2 more than me, okay? But, hold right, jump, hold down, jump, spin dash is something we already did! And it's not like it's gone away, we've had all this portable games for the Gameboy and the DS that all y'alls could have been playing if you really felt that strongly about Treasure hunts. All this resistance to change was kind of quaint in 1999, but at this point, it's become kind of tired. I'm not saying you should marry Big the Cat, just that you acknowledge that the Sonic franchise CAN evolve into something beyond the platforms we remember and love. Will everyone like it? Hell no! But if Sega can't make a 3d Sonic that you like, who's to say they'll make a 2d Sonic that you like?

I really don't want another sonic advance. I need Sonic 1-3,k,CD. Sonic advance got weird level design that doesn't allow exploration, and sonic rush... well ,that's garbage. It's a game about running and jumping, not a platformer like sonic is supposed to be. If you see stages like marble zone, casino night zone, labirinth zone and many others, it's not a game about running. Speed was used in the right times, not like that crappy rush games where everything that you jump is a bottomless pit.

Who didn't see this coming A MILE away? Of course it's sonic. All the evidence pointed to Sonic. Just don't fuck this up Sega, you've had what.. 3 chances to bring Sonic games back to what they used to be... y'know.. fun? Let's hope the 4th time is the charm, I know I am... everything's crossed.

It's about damned time Sonic gets back to more of a classic gameplay style, especially with Sonic being the only playable character. Now, if Sonic Team can get back to the franchise's roots by adopting a Sonic 1 or 2 style of gameplay (hell, even with the addition of rails), it just might be good enough to resurrect this series.

However, this IS SEGA we're talking about, so they'll most likely find a way to screw this one up just so they can take the proverbial horse behind the shed and bust a cap in it. We'll have to see.

The more I think about this game the more doubtful I become. I mean not only are there not going to be any new characters or returning characters for that matter which means there will probably be no story to speak of, but it will also just be more of the same. The first level will be a beach level, the final level will be another one of robotnik's bases, and robotnik will come out at the end with a big-ass robot to fight Sonic with even though it has obviously never worked in the past. And I mean come on the so-called badnik concept art just looks like a slightly modified crabmeat enemy. Don't get me wrong I actually love the Sonic series, but what Sega needs is some fresh new ideas. I loved the first two Sonic Adventures why can't they do a third that can actually rival those?! What would be interesting however is if they come up with some new designs for Sonic and Eggman. Not a complete derivation, but just a minor cosmetic change. I think as much as no-one will admit, I think it was a big part of Sonic Adventure's success. In the end, I think the best bet for Sega at this point is to collaborate with Sega's Archie Comics series and integrate some of their characters and storylines into Sega's games.
