Cryptic has announced some special Star Trek Online subscription options for anyone planning to sink some serious time into the game. The company is selling a lifetime subscription to the game for $239.99, which will last however long the game does. Also included with the lifetime subscription is a playable Borg character and two extra character slots. If you're not quite that devoted, you can opt for a 12-month subscription for $119.99, which also includes two extra character slots.
Big Download notes that regular subscriptions range from $14.99 per month, $41.97 for three months or $77.94 for six months, so the 12-month subscription is substantially cheaper than the $155.88 it would cost for two six-month subscriptions. Remember that the 12-month and lifetime subscriptions are available only for pre-orders, so you'll have to put some money down if you want to save money in the future.
As for whether you'll actually still be playing it in the future, you'll just have to wait and see. Or you could use a tachyon pulse. That works too.

MY lifetime or the lifetime of the GAME?
One would be a substantially better value than the other.

You will still have to buy the game too. Total cost would be Lifetime sub, or other, + $60. If they would give you the game and a Lifetime sub for $239.99 I would consider that a better deal.

its like gift cards. yay interest! that's a hefty sum to commit to a game for at least 16 months to make it worth it....

in the world of new MMOs, 12 months is their lifetime.

This is the first MMO I've played, and so far I'm liking the open beta fairly well.
But man...these options are available prior to launch only? How do I know, at THIS point, whether I will be playing this game for 12 months? Let alone the rest of the game's lifespan (which, frankly, may not be significantly longer than that)? Not a risk I'm going to take, even to save a few bucks in the long run.

Holy fuck -- with the game and a subscription you're into nearly $100 just at the bare minimum. For the game and a lifetime subscription you could buy an XBox Elite or a whole new PS3. Honestly who is spending $300 on this?

People with no lives who spend too much time on the internet.
I cannot fathom how people get so addicted to MMOs.

I got bored in three days during open beta, I can't imagine spending $240 + retail box for three days of not much fun.

Do any open beta players like this game? I played it for a few hours and quickly cancelled my preorder...
Posted: Jan 15th 2010 5:10PM phobic99 said
I was in game last night and from what I saw in chat, a lot of players were lapping up that $240. I asked them how were they so sure this game is worth it and most of the responses were "I've played for two days and I'm sold!"
I then thought of Champions Online and it's launch day patch. Hilarious. Whatever, if it's fun to you, I say go for it but these preorder lifetime MMO subs are definitely a gamble. You have to figure there have only been what... 4 MMOs that have offered a lifetime sub and three of those had Bill Roper sniffing around somewhere (LOTRO, Champions Online, Star Trek Online and oh Hellgate London says hello).

I do like it a lot. I'll probably play until I get bored or move on to TOR. I do think it's weird that they're trying to snag lifetime subs before the game is even out...you have to "preorder" a lifetime sub? Weird.

Hell, I say six months. You can't expect everyone to be fully engrossed and confident enough to drop $240 within a month let alone days.
So much is locked out of the beta it seems the retail game will be exponentially larger. That's a good thing, but I'd like to get out there and see how much I like it before I consider such a huge drop, that on TOP of the game price.
If the game was included I'd probably be more willing to consider it.

After watching Giantbombs 3 videos where they play the game (about 2.5 hours total), I have to say it looks good. But it also looks like a fucking Champions Online total conversion mod. From the UI to the way loot shines and having said that watching STO made me want to play Champions and preorder STO....

$14.99 for a MONTH? Shit, the game better be free at these ridiculous prices, if I was EVER interested, I am officially 200% uninterested in this now.

I hope the dorsal side of that saucer section has a navigational deflector. The only other possibility would be if Starfleet had decided to borrow some other nation's deflector technology, which seems unlikely, given the proven usefulness of the giant Swiss army knife design.

Thats a pretty hefty price seeing as you can't tell before the game comes out if it will be around long enough to justify the price. It does look really fun though!

As a open beta user I pre-ordered the game and after playing the beta version the game is not for me and I am a very devoted Star Trek fan and also a big Star Trek gamer. As a result I have now cancelled my order since I was not that impressed with paying £35 for this game let alone a $10 monthly subscription for what I experienced to be a very dissapointing experience. Theres alot of features which are missing from this game and not exactly the experience that I came across as a result of watching the video's from the gamers website.
The game was a big let down and it may appeal to lots of people but not me. Personally it lacks serious attention to detail and has the same space combat as Star Trek Legacy including bumper physics and in a lovely 2D plane! so if you dont mind bumping into players and bouncing off and your starship exploding after a few seconds of taking direct hits then you will find this game very frustrating!
Its not exactly the same game I was expecting such as Star Trek Klingon Academy or Star Trek Bridge Commander.
Prepared to be very dissapointed! This game will appeal to a few people who love MMO's but sadly not the likes of me who expected far more from this game. Theres alot of underlaying things not right with this game from a Trekkie's point of view.
Lets hope this game improves!
Also if you are in the UK I experienced very bad lag issues with the game which made it very unplayable. The game creator stipulated that once it goes past open beta that all will be ok but so far the experience hasn't exactly been a Kling-ing on :-(

People got to remember ths is the beta. I was in the closed beta and the open beta has made vast improvements since then. Also, almost all the content is still locked within huge sectors of space. WoW was not what it is today at launch and needed many years to get to what it is today and they are still changing things. I love the space combat in STO but the ground stuff is so-so for me. Personally, I have been enjoying the look and feel of being in the Star Trek universe which I feel they have done a great job capturing.
