As much as I enjoyed MW2, and enjoyed the campaign, and thought it was basically an awesome, bad ass war movie, the writing was pretty terrible, aside from a few choice quotes from Price that I thought were pretty good.

Well, I think we can all safely say that Bayonetta will be on this list next year.

Am I right or what?

No it shouldn't. The game was great but the story was idiotic. Uncharted 2 takes the cake hands down.

I kinda wish when people arranged awards like these, they'd cite reasons they chose them as nominations.

mw2? I'm sorry, but that script should be receiving a de-merit...

It could be that these nominees are actually members of the Guild (with actual television/movie credits)...

Wait, did you just say Dragon Age has good writing? I mean, I love the game, but it's writing is bad at best. (And it doesn't help that the voice acting is awful.)

Boo hiss, down vote those who disagree with your opinions!

I agree with Hyams, BioWare usually has some of the worst writing in video games with some of the most cliche characters that take any moment possible to vomit their entire life history from the moment they were born at your feet.

Assassin's Creed 2 had a fair share of cliche characters, but executed them so well and managed to develop the majority of them heavily through the game. While not perfect, it was very well done.

Uncharted 2 probably did it the best with the more human characters and how natural the dialogs were, and how personified each character was, and how they played out.

don't worry Hyams, I'm with you, but saying anything bad about dragon age gets you downvoted.

for example: "anyone who legitimately enjoyed Dragon Age is an emotionally stunted manchild"

What characters did AC2 have really? Your mute mother? Your sister who did the taxes? Uncle Mario? Evil Pope? No one developed in that game at all except Ezio, and all he did was grow a beard and deepen his voice. I won't get into anything about writing for dragon age cause that will take too long, but how can you guys talk about how human and great Uncharted 2's performances and personifactions were when three of UC2's lead characters also voiced 3 of DAO's main characters?! They were all incredible! Especially Claudia Black and Simon Templeman! You guys are nuts, I think everyone on this site really needs a refresher of what the word cliche fucking means.

Haha, it's a good thing Ubisoft Montreal outsourced their writing south of 49 or they wouldn't have been eligible either. I wonder if that's why Bioware has some troubles with the WGA Awards, because they belong to the WGC?

The fact that neither House of the Dead: Overkill nor Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is on this list - while Modern Warfare 2 and Wolverine are - both demonstrates exactly how hard this group is actually looking to find games with good writing and guarantees that I will never give a shit about them again.

Actually, those games were both made by British studios, so maybe that makes them ineligible...? I have no idea, I'm not familiar with the rules and regulations of the WGA. I wonder, would that also make any translated Japanese game ineligible as well? They should have a "best localization" award.

Still, none of this excuses the presence of MW2 and Wolverine on that list.

At this rate, I'm surprised Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Street Fighter IV and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 didn't make the cut...

On a more serious note, where's The Saboteur and Ratchet & Clank Future: ACiT? Hell, I haven't played Dragon Age: Origins and even I know that has a place on such a list, too, just based on what a friend has discussed with me.

Really? The Saboteur? I loved that game but dialog and character exposition was not it's strong suit. It's really a shame they made Sean irish, because his voice actor does a french accent better than any of the other french people in that game.

To be nominated for a Writers Guild award, (1) the -writer/s- of the game had to submit the script, and (2) the game MUST include a credit for writing. Why? Because we have to make sure we're giving an award to the people who truly wrote the game. People complaining here that the Writers Guild didn't nominate games like Dragon Age or whatever should just be aware that in 99.9% of the cases where you're wondering "What About Game X?! Why isn't Game X on this list?!" the answer is that either the writer(s) didn't nominate themselves (i.e. Dragon Age), or else the Developer/Publisher wouldn't allow them to submit the script (EA, for one, pretends that scripts for released games are a "trade secret" -- why, no one is really sure), or, sadly, the Developer won't allow their writer to take credit for writing the game. Some companies (like Insomniac, or the people who made Bioshock, for example) refuse to list their employees by title -- in that case, the Writers Guild can't determine WHO the writer was, and so the game is ineligible. All submissions are read by professional videogame writers, the five with the highest scores are the nominees, and then the nominees are read again by a separate panel of writers. The winning game will have been read by no fewer than TEN professional videogame writers, most of whose names would be instantly recognizable to the readers of this board. If we say that, say, Dead Head Fred, or Star Wars: the Force Unleashed was the best videogame script we read that year, it was. We are judging the writing only, by the way... so while your favorite game might be more fun to play than the game we awarded, that's not our problem; we're only judging the script. Similarly, the Writers Guild award for best written film takes only the written word into account.
