If you haven't got any cash to donate to charitable organizations who're currently lending a hand with recovery efforts in Haiti, don't fret -- Bungie's organizing a free method for you to show your support. All you have to do is change your Halo 3 (or ODST) emblem to the heart seen in the image above, and play any of the games' online modes this coming Wednesday and Thursday. Bungie's donating a dime for every person who does so to the Red Cross (up to a maximum donation of $77,000). Check out Bungie's blog for more information about the event.
If you're wanting to make a slightly larger contribution, you could also purchase a special version of the Superintendent t-shirt from the Bungie store -- all of the proceeds from which will also go directly to the Red Cross.

They obviously will donate the money regardless. This is just to create awareness of the situation in Haiti.

This is just a way for them to put focus on their game, if was about charity they would have just donated it. Scenes of bodies lying in the streets have been on the news throughout the week so this has nothing to do with "awareness".

*ahem*
Yeah, I usually don't watch the news. Most of the time here it's just random crime, murder/death, and once in a blue moon they actually show something half-good. Good as in people donating for the poor and things like that.
But I heard about this from family before I saw it on Joystiq, so I'm sorta in the gray area for this I guess.

The best type of donation is an anonymous donation. Nice try getting me to play Halo again or buy a Tshirt advertising bungie. I donate and continue to donate directly. Awareness is already As high as can be

That's like saying, "for every person that follows me on Twitter, I'll donate a dollar." C'mon guys, all you have to do is click 'follow.' No. It's a sad attempt at exploiting and taking advantage of a tragic situation.

If we were talking about some unknown game, then I might buy that. If I was drunk.
But this is fucking Halo. Do you REALLY think, that with all the advertising and marketing that MS gives Halo, they need to do this to get attention? Last I checked Halo wasn't exactly a dieing brand.
Oh, and by the way, Bungie doesn't own the Halo IP, so they would barely be promoting themselves at all if that was the case.

Actually yes, you do the exact opposite, specially when you have the money to spare and call of duty as a competitor. IMO they're taking advantage of the situation.

OH MY F*****G GOD! Would you have complained if there were no news of support from Bungie at all? Probably not, which makes your comment that much more useless (if that's possible) . It's good to know they're doing something, regardless of how they do it.

CNN has a list of donating to specific needs for Haiti, as well:
http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/impact/
Additionally, ex-presidents Bill Clinton and G-Dub have a site where you can give donations. Clinton, if you haven't heard, has been the UN's envoy to Haiti and was assisting them before the earthquake destroyed what little progress they've made:

According to this article (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/12/haiti-earthquake-relief-h_n_421014.html) you can also donate to the Clinton Fundation bt texting HAITI to 20222 to donate $10.

Considering how much human decency your average Halo 3 player shows, and how much your average 12 year old is afraid of being labeled gay, I don't think this will work very well.

except that this actually does do something because it results in bungie donating more funds to haitian relief. did you even bother to read the entire post, or has your cynicism rendered you blind?

Actually, the best thing Bungie could have done is to quietly donate the money. The fact that they require that people use a stupid avatar in order for them to donate shows that it's not only about giving aid.
They may very well donate the full amount regardless, which is what they should do, but any public participation-based donation scheme always reeks of ulterior motivation.

is the money that bungie donates somehow less worthwhile if they gained some publicity through donating it? if they donated $10,000, would that not buy food, water, and shelter whether they organized event or not? why do you care if they bungie also benefits from it as well? hell, if good publicity is what ultimately makes more companies donate, then let them capitalize on the situation as much as they want, i'd rather they donate and gain publicity than NOT donate at all.
you're also pretty ignorant of how bungie is actually approaching this, i'd bet anything that they have a minimum donation already planned out, and will increase that based on the event. somehow i don't think they'd only donate $0.20 if only 2 players did this.
sure, it's not the most altruistic way to do it, but hey that's the real world: where altruism is a illusion.

Wince you're a fucking idiot. Consider the fact that the people Bungie is trying to reach are probably children, who don't necessarily have jobs or money. I don't see how this is any different from a food drive at your local school where a child can bring in a can of food they brought from home.

Ah, personal attacks. Very productive for debate.
I do admit I was a bit hasty in my criticism of Bungie here. It is a good thing what they are doing, not a bad thing. David was correct in saying it's not the most altruistic way of going about it, but that doesn't invalidate their cause.
However, this statement is a little silly:
"you're also pretty ignorant of how bungie is actually approaching this, i'd bet anything..."
That is completely hypocritical. How can you call me ignorant of their process, and then make a COMPLETELY blind guess as to what they are doing.

Make no mistake, this isn't for humanitarian reasons but for corporate reasons. If they really wanted to help, they could have donated over $1 million easily. This is just for getting players to play their games, and also for good publicity.

Who cares what "THEY'RE" after, most pple on this earth would help others if it only cost them a minimal amount of time and they don't even have to leave the comfort of their couch and TV.
On a side not this "gimmick" you propose is total nonsense. Haiti relief efforts deserve as much publicity as possible.

you seem to live in some fantasy world where people just do things out of the good of their heart. sure, some people do, and that's great, but corporations, especially in a profit-motivated capitalist system, will do what's in their best interest. if they can figure out a way to benefit both themselves AND others (aka donate to the haitian relief effort while gaining publicity), why shouldn't they?
this pretty much mirrors the "going green" debate. a lot of companies aren't going to go green just to save the environment, but when you demonstrate that going green can reduce their overhead and gain them publicity, they'll more often than not do it. frankly, that's better than them not doing anything at all.

Bungie doesn't get paid for XBL subscriptions, they don't need you to play the game as long as you buy it, how are they gaining any money from this at all? They're drumming up publicity....from people who already own it? In the words of ever truthful Christian Bale " Just think for one fucking second"

This is in no way a way for Bungie to increase the amount of people that actually play halo. Like many others have already said halo is already actually popular. This is just a way to promote goodwill for their company so they can say hey we donated to Haiti. Every company does it that donates so why all the bad comments for Bungie? It's not like they are asking you to go out and buy a copy of ODST then play 5 hours worth of Grifball. Shit people just change your emblem
