This is just a way for them to put focus on their game, if was about charity they would have just donated it. Scenes of bodies lying in the streets have been on the news throughout the week so this has nothing to do with "awareness".

Yeah, I usually don't watch the news. Most of the time here it's just random crime, murder/death, and once in a blue moon they actually show something half-good. Good as in people donating for the poor and things like that.
But I heard about this from family before I saw it on Joystiq, so I'm sorta in the gray area for this I guess.

Actually, the best thing Bungie could have done is to quietly donate the money. The fact that they require that people use a stupid avatar in order for them to donate shows that it's not only about giving aid.
They may very well donate the full amount regardless, which is what they should do, but any public participation-based donation scheme always reeks of ulterior motivation.

is the money that bungie donates somehow less worthwhile if they gained some publicity through donating it? if they donated $10,000, would that not buy food, water, and shelter whether they organized event or not? why do you care if they bungie also benefits from it as well? hell, if good publicity is what ultimately makes more companies donate, then let them capitalize on the situation as much as they want, i'd rather they donate and gain publicity than NOT donate at all.

Make no mistake, this isn't for humanitarian reasons but for corporate reasons. If they really wanted to help, they could have donated over $1 million easily. This is just for getting players to play their games, and also for good publicity.

you seem to live in some fantasy world where people just do things out of the good of their heart. sure, some people do, and that's great, but corporations, especially in a profit-motivated capitalist system, will do what's in their best interest. if they can figure out a way to benefit both themselves AND others (aka donate to the haitian relief effort while gaining publicity), why shouldn't they?
this pretty much mirrors the "going green" debate. a lot of companies aren't going to go green just to save the environment, but when you demonstrate that going green can reduce their overhead and gain them publicity, they'll more often than not do it. frankly, that's better than them not doing anything at all.

This is just a way to promote goodwill for their company so they can say hey we donated to Haiti. Every company does it that donates so why all the bad comments for Bungie? It's not like they are asking you to go out and buy a copy of ODST then play 5 hours worth of Grifball. Shit people just change your emblem
