The last beta phase for Zipper Interactive's pseudo-MMOFPS MAG has ended, and the developer has compiled some facts and figures you may find fascinating. According to a recent post on the studio's blog, over one million people downloaded the MAG beta client worldwide. Of that group, around 619,000 people gained at least one point of experience, 52,846 became eligible for Squad Leader status, 10,249 became Platoon Leaders, 3,181 hit the rank of Officer in Charge, and only 143 players reached the level 60 experience cap.
Zipper also broke down the populations of the three factions: Raven and Valor each netted about 38 percent of the game's player base, while SVER only picked up 24 percent. However, despite its smaller size, SVER ended up winning out overall for the Sabotage gametype. Well, now we know which private military contractor is the plucky underdog.

Downloading MAG was the best part..
Update after Update is all you need.
I wish the retail version gave you trophies just for updating the game

The concept is good, but seriously the lack of wide open maps is bad.

Honestly, playing this game feels like playing Modern Warfare with much more people but with not so great graphics. No, I am not one of those people who thing Modern Warfare 2 is the greatest game ever. I just feel this way about MAG and made me kind of disappointed.

I think this game is very fun, but that the 256 player mode (Domination) has some frame rate issues. On 2 of the 3 Domination maps, the frame rate is low, but tolerable. On the third, however, it's just plain terrible.
Fortunately, only 25% of the game or so is on those 256 player maps. 64 and 128 is more than enough for me.
The graphics of the game are quite ugly, but the gameplay is great. If you're a huge fan of Call of Duty, then you may not like this game. The philosophies are wildly different. I would recommend it to Battlefield 2 and 2142 PC gamers though.

you people need to actually give the game a chance. it was a great experience but most didnt even play it and those that did ran around aimlessly and got pissed when someone killed them. it is a objective based game and was great for teamwork. its not a run and gun type of game it requires patience and planning.its not an fps its an sps, its the smart person shooter.
and quit complaining about graphics. theres so much people and things going on i never even cared. and it isnt jaring or polygonal.
and those talking about problems playing. its a damn beta not a finished game and for a beta it played better than 90% of the other fps games out there.

Mr. Alex, you forget that instigators don't care if they post in sections that have nothing to do with their interests?
They only want a reaction and are posting because they are insecure about something else in their life. Why else would someone post a negative comment about a game they will never buy for a console they don't even own?

Sony Defense Force is out in full force today...
Game is crap; no one is going to care about it when it releases, at least, no one important.

They're here everyday, but yeah I know what you mean. It certainly doesn't help that they're releasing the same day as Mass Effect 2 and even the 2 Wii exclusives which will draw some multi-console owners as well.
I don't expect this game to do well at all.

I personally had a great experience with the beta. At first, I didn't understand much of what to do, and was just killing enemies. But after I while, I got used to the controls and gameplay, and from there; CRAZY fun. The platoon leaders were helpful and knowledgable. They answered my questions, and complimeted my successes. When our team captured a base, all those with a mic would congratulate the others. I really felt a strong team bond, and it was just a great experience. I even made a few PSN friends, just from working together over mics. I strongly suggest FPS fans to at least rent the game. Try it out, and don't give up after 5 minutes. If you keep to it, it can become really addicting. I'll be picking this one up on the first day!

I never actually downloaded the updates. I looked at "1.8 GB", laughed, and turned it off.
I'll have to rent it or something before I buy.

Shut the fuck up, Bradfart!
Sorry, I don't really give a shit whether you say anything or not since, you know, it's a blog about video games.
Either way, I haven't tried MAG yet since my PS3 isn't working (disk read error: how do I fix it?) but I'd honestly like to get it a try. It seems to have a story and drive, so I'd like to see how it stacks up to my high standards for video games even if it is just multiplayer.

bah I got to Level 4 the day after I downloaded then the server was offline.......offline.....can't connect......if I don't hear problems like that after the game's release i probably will pick it up as I had fun playing it, I mean playing against another 64 people meant 20 people just carried on walking into my sniper scope in the same spot it was great fun :)

I played the beta for a bit. It was fine, but I don't know. The FPS genre is just so over-saturated that it takes a lot to pull me in. It wasn't bad but it didn't have anything that "WOW";d me, nothing spectacular. I'm sure it'll end up being a great game but I'm so bored of wartime shooters that I really can't be bothered. Same goes for BC2. Beta was good, but I'm so sick of the genre in general I just can't get myself excited for it.

I loved this beta, but it made me hate Sony (even as the fanboy I am). Why have you spread the already small install-base over three AAA shooters? I'm just going to keep playing Killzone 2 multiplayer.

At first I hated it because of the graphics and controls. But I hooked up with a squad of guys and started playing as a Sniper (Valor). After coming to grips with the controls and having teammates that actually talked and used tactics. I had a an absolute blast. Got to level 9 after four days of playing but had to stop because of my work schedule.
Too many people are trying to judge MAG as a run and style shooter. It's so not. You will die like a dog if you try to play MAG like it's MW2. It's far more tactical. I'm hoping I can join a clan that plays together a lot so I can play with teammates I can trust to watch my back as I watch theirs.
I solved the control issue by playing with a Splitfish. As a sniper, using a M15 EBR with the zoom/less recoil/stability enhancement. The game opened up and became very addictive. I usually play as a sniper in KZ2 and Resistance/R2 so I stuck with my strength and it was a blast.
I'll be picking up MAG first day. I've grown to really love the more tactical shooters as opposed to the typical run and gun style. Metal Gear Online is great for this if you can get a clean game without glitchers and freaks. Warhawk is a great example of more tactical gameplay. SOCOM I didn't play much of because of the early bugs. Sony and their partners are really trying to push the idea of actual teamwork with their first and second party titles. Kudos to them.

does anyone know whether the character we created will carry over into the full game or will we have to start from scratch. dont want that 20+ hours of playing to go to waste

I said it months ago in the private beta that a majority people will hate it. It demands too much from the player in a post COD4 world.

The beta sucked. Nothing more than an increased abortion of people playing with no microphones whatsoever. Can't control an Army if you can't talk to them!

IMO this game is horrible. I know it's just a beta, but lets be completely honest people... People ALWAYS say that... "It's just beta, they will fix this and that" But in reality there isnt much they can do except tweak things unless the completely delay it for a long time for an overhaul. The game isn't completely bad, but I much rather play Battlefield: BC2 when its released, this game was a huge let down.

Word, I enjoyed the beta, although I didn't get a chance to play it as much as I would have liked to.
There's a couple game mechanics that took some getting used to, but after playing through a lot of SOCOM, BF, and MGO, I got up to speed pretty fast.
Yes, as people have mentioned, playing as a team is very important in this game. Having a squad with mics as opposed to one without makes a big difference.
Liked:
- Teamplay is encouraged and rewarded.
- Building a custom character and load out.
- Being able to play a supporting role and still feel valuable to the team even if you are not a great contributer to the kill count.
- While it may not be the prettiest game out there, I found the maps to be well designed. Lots of scattered cover, multiple paths, open spaces, doesn't feel constrained by invisible walls.
Disliked:
- Level requirements for entering certain match types (I never did get the chance to play a 256 player game). I don't want to feel like I need to "grind" my way to the actual main game.
- Armor? What does it do? There doesn't seem to be much or any difference in the amount of damage you can take despite the 3 classes of armor.
Anyways, this will probably be a purchase for me, I enjoy the team play elements, the "slower" pacing, and even the whole 1 faction, 1 account thing.
So any of you who are SVER and proud, feel free to add me to PSN.

That game was AWESOME!!
I picked the Raven's, they were pretty good. The sniper was my weapon of choice, with the grip and different scope. I would get like 13 kills in one game, well not always but most of the time.

I wanted to play the beta but all I got was a startup error. I updated my system, and re-downloaded it, and again with the startup error. I even went on the official MAG forums and didn't get a single response. I consider that a fail.
