I've never played Marble Madness, but I've heard of Mark Cerny. I think he deserves this award, very much so. One of the great pioneers.

I haven't seen one of these units in about 20+ years, but I can still hum the theme song from the first level. Definitely a milestone in gaming.

I must have been a glutton for punishment when I was a child: I remember I rented this game, like, 6 times and I could never get past the second damn level...

Lots of bad memories. I've hated marbles ever since.

Marble Madness was an awesome game! between this Snake-Rattle and Roll and Final Fantasy 1, it accounts for most of my early childhood.

that being said, Level 2 was a bitch (I think it was 2) and 3 didn't get much easier. the real money was playing 2 players :). I think I only beat it one, and there are only 6 levels!

Anyone else notice that the filename for the PDF press release is "HOF-boilerplate.pdf" ??

Boilerplate refers to cookie-cut language in press releases that can be quickly (and often cynically) adapted to suit a repeat need or occasion, like a form letter or a mad-lib.

It can sometimes refer to the junk paragraphs at the end of almost every press release describing the organizations who are invovled, and they did more than simply plug in the honeree's name and the current year, but putting "boilerplate" in the filename of an award announcement is a bit of a revealing gaffe.

Where I work, we use a letter drafted specially for script rejections. The filename is called 'boilerplate_reject', but the receiver wouldn't be all the wiser given that it's printed and sent off by mail, or copy-pasted for email. From the looks of it Mark Cerny is well respected by the body that awarded him this prestigious award; those many minutes it took to amend 'Cerny' from 'yesterday's hero' was obviously a course well plotted.

well deserved, this game made my ass hurt many times when I was a kid. I only wish they'd put it on the VC as is, or xbla/psn as an upgrade

That fucking game killed me as a kid on the NES. I don't think there were more than 3 levels in it.

Only way to play this is on a cabinet with a rollerball. Luckily a local has one he brings to shows set to free play.

Still cannot get past the 3rd level!!!

I was pleasantly surprised to hear about this (on the PS Blog a few days ago), because I'd been aware of his work for a few years and was always a little disappointed that he seemed so under the radar, as far as industry figures go. Good to see people do recognize his contributions.

As for Marble Madness, which was always one of my favorite arcade games, the best I've ever done was reaching Stage 4 last year, on a machine with a trackball.

just like everyone else, that game absolutely tore me a new one every time I played it. And I played it a lot. Man games were had as hell back in the day.

Classic game though.
