This is actually the first post we've ever written about some guy selling his Steam account
We can't believe someone would actually want to get rid of their Steam account
So, yeah, eBay user dave311freak is trying to unload his massive Steam collection (139 titles strong) onto whoever's willing to fork over the most cash for it. As it stands, nobody's actually dropped a bid on the auction, so we're not sure he'll be successful in this venture. Head past the break for a video rundown of some highlights from dude's collection.
This is exactly the reason not to fall into this ridiculous trend of digital content. There is no ownership and your access to the content you paid good money for can disappear on a whim. Whether you did something to get banned or not there's always a risk of losing your content because you dont actually own what you pay for.
the reason i go digital is because, the stores (steam and maybe another i use) always are easier to get a great PC game than to go hunt down in person. often faster, especially for pop cap type games. sometimes you can get great deals on websites but you have to look.
On average, i pay 5 to 20 dollars for a title on steam due to their great deals constantly. No, you may not own it definitately, but you do own it for as long as you would possibly want to before you get tired of it. Its about as cheap as you can get to renting, because i'm so frugal about it. There's really no value to your box and retail pc games to go sell to someone else sadly, so never getting a return is not a big deal. especially with the amount of time you can sink in or mods.
I want proof of the value via steamcalculator.com but it failed when I tried to look him up. That's a pretty good collection though: way more than what mine's worth.
that site isnt completely accurate either... it said mine is worth over $180, showing I own the Valve complete pack when I only own the orange box and L4D
and 2 minutes later it is telling me my account is worth $811 and i have 52 games when it should be 62. i think it is safe to say this is far from 100% accurate.
Oh, freaking cool site! Apparently mine is worth $1634.18 USD. Not bad. Actually, that just makes me feel really silly for all the games I've bought on Steam and don't actually play.
(Steam: epeternally, if you wanted to see my games for some weird, stalkerish reason)
#1. This isn't news at all. It happens all the time #2. People constantly sell their game collections for many reasons #3. 139 games on Steam isn't impressive at all #4. I hope whoever paid $1000 for the games isn't actually going to honor that payment, or they're a complete idiot
man you're telling me. i've got 62. i snagged games like Mass Effect and Lost Planet on weekend deals but never really got around to playing them. i put 2 hours into Mass Effect, got stuck and never when back...
This is against TOS, yes, but I would imagine that you could make a killing by waiting to fill up on games when they go on sale then unload the whole bunch when there aren't any sales. Even if you cut the price in half from what they usually go for on Steam you'd still make a nice profit if you wait long enough for the right titles.
Terms of Service and End-User License Agreements are rarely, if ever, challenged in a court of law. Which is strange because they are flimsy as hell in regards to actual binding contract law. (nothing is signed, you can use a third-party, license transfer laws, and so on)
If anything, this guy's mistake was "selling" his account rather than "transferring" his licenses.
I expect to see more of this as digital distribution becomes the norm.
Dude, that is a smart idea. I know he said start a new hobby but if you had all those games. your not guna fuckin playem all again so you sell them and have money to buy a new list all over.
What...the hell is the point? Metaphorically, this is the equivalent of a store selling apples for 1$ each, and a smelly homeless guy outside the store selling the same apples at 10$ for a box of 5. It's stupid, and I hope the person who actually bought this feels stupid too.
This is against the steam TOS, because Steam is a lot more evil than people give credit for. Whine about restrictive DRM, but if Steam finds you sharing or selling an account, they'll ban it, and you'll lose every bit of everything you paid for.
They're customer service also sucks horribly in general. My one dealing with them almost caused me to stop buying games on Steam entirely. Unfortunately, the convenience is...tempting, and no rival has produced a better service yet.
i have a barely-used steam account from 2004 which i only had because of HL2. I think the only games I have on it are HL2, CS, and The Ship.
Remember back then, when people were like "You have to use the INTERNET to activate an OFFLINE GAME?!?!?!? PREPOSTEROUS" and Steam was an overloaded piece of shit?
To all the people saying his account will get pulled because it's against TOS. People buy steam account all the time, their are whole forums related to nothing but buying and selling steam accounts. I successfully have bought and still own 4 accounts with all different games. Against TOS or not, steam doesn't care as long as the accounts aren't stolen.
The guy who bought the account just to leave negative feedback seems to be doing it a lot on other items, even on ones that look completely legitimate. Trolling eBay isn't fun kids, it costs people money to put listings up!
Yeah I sold my CODMW2-only Steam account on Ebay about three weeks ago. I only got about $35 though. I forgot to mention that I had a level 45 account connected to it in the auction. If I had done so, I think I would've gotten a much better final price. Sigh.
yes its a criminal offence to sell virtually all digital content. Steam, microsoft 360, all PSN. they are trying to destroy the second hand market, and you are wilfully letting them.
I think it's the friend of this guy who posted on reddit. I don't remember where the post was, but someone logged on to their steam account to find that they had every game on Steam. He was freaked out and was unsure if he would lose his steam account. Apparently, he has a netbook and isn't great with computers...
