market disruption is the best form of competition, actually, as it forces your competitors to either innovate, or relegate themselves to a slowly declining niche.

Good thing for them they finally figured out they need to stray from said declining niche dual analog experiences.

I wonder if there are any more PS2 price drops...I think a $50 price point would give it some newfound life, considering its cheaper than most new games nowadays. The PS1 dropped all the way to $30, didn't it?

I thought we had gone an unusual amount of time without some negative Sony news.

I was beginning to worry!

The PS2's lifecycle has been rather incredible, to say the least. If my Phat ever breaks, I can safely say I'd replace it in a heartbeat.

However, I wouldn't count Sony out by any means. Who thought Nintendo would come back from a last-place finish in the sixth generation and crush the others in the seventh?

Not to mention it will be difficult for Nintendo to replicate the success of the Wii in the next generation. Not saying it's impossible, mind you. Just saying it is harder to get the "casual gamers" who bought the Wii for the trendy Wii Sports and Wii Fit to double dip.

I'm sure they'll figure out something, though.

Well, Sony did dominate the market for two generations in a row, but their strategy was very different from that of Nintendo.

@Doc j: you're right man.....casual gamers don't see a need to jump to a new console just because. I mean since the Wii isn't a power hungry machine and doesn't put off a lot of heat, chances are that if left stationary for 8+ years then the damn thing will last for a good while, and since grandma & grandpa only play Wii sports(they can't exactly keep their balance on Wii Fit with a cane or walker) then they have no need to get anything new. Hell Soccer moms don't either for that reason....unless Nintendo comes HARD at the GAMERS then next gen they will be in some shit

Nintendo has name-brand momentum that will help with that, and hopefully the third parties will be smart enough to invest in the platform from the beginning

That alone could be the key. If they could just resolve the third party situation, and at least net the big multiplats, it would destroy the primary advantage that Sony and Microsoft have over them this generation. That, and what is practically exclusive brand-name recognition with an entire market segment, could allow them to have something PS2-ish in its ability to unify the market

The difference though is that Nintendo has always been profitable. Sony is actually literally on the verge of losing on the entirety of the Playstation brand, if I'm not mistaken. There's no way there won't be a PS4 at this point, but given the differences between how Sony and Nintendo are structured, if the PS3 keeps hurting like this I could imagine the Playstation brand being significantly less important to Sony in the future as a whole.

2010 might be the year that Sony makes a turnaround. The PS3's going to get some good releases this year. Sony might want to do some more aggressive marketing for their system in light of that.

Please... give it a rest, already... "20xx is going to be the year Sony makes a turnaround!" has been the oft repeated fankid mantra since 2006--you remember: Back when PS3 was going to dominate worldwide hardware sales and destroy the opposition?

The system is destined to remain dead last throughout its cycle: PS3 trails the 360 by nearly 8 million units worldwide. 2009 was considered a landmark year for the PS3, providing record sales of 4.5 million systems sold, all year. Translation: If 2010 is the most stellar year in PS3 history, it still won't catch 360 -- even if Ballmer and Co. fail to ship a single xbox unit through the entirety of next year!

And, in case you had't noticed, Sony HAS been doing aggressive marketing... REALLY aggressive... (and you know what? kudos to them, some of it has actually been clever) but the fact remains: even with all the marketing, the chugging PR bullet train and the endless string of promises, the PS3 failed to capitalize, has not provided Sony with profits OR market share, and has absolutely STRUGGLED to outsell its closest competitor. And, even when it (finally) managed to (barely) eke out a (potentially pyrrhic) victory, it was only capable of sustaining the lead for a meager three months (during one of which, it tanked against the xbox in the US). Mind you, all of this occurred only after a massive price drop, an unparalleled marketing blitz, a refreshed hardware offering and the release of the console's single most critically acclaimed and overtly-hyped exclusive of the year *cough cough* Uncharted 2 *cough*

I didn't mean a miraculously abrupt reversal in the state of affairs. That would be deluded. I was thinking of a more gradual progression, one where Sony didn't necessarily come out on top, but one where it steadily recovers its losses.

Hmmm... It appears that my comment was misconstrued as being "fanboyish". A second reading made me think that the optimism in my post could have contributed to that. Now, mine may be an unreasonably positive prediction for Sony, true, but I hope--for the sake of the gaming industry as a whole--that they learn something from their humbling experience. (The PSP Go was a step back, though, I admit.)

The prices of new release games for the PSP Go probably have something to do with the low sales of the system. I hope Sony realizes this soon and does something about it. Sure, there are lots of great games available to download. But the new releases cost more on the PSN than they do if you were to buy a brand new physical copy from most online retailers. Why is this? I am still waiting to get Little Big Planet, Jak and Daxter, and Motor Storm for my Go. I will not pay $40 however, for a digital copy of a PSP game. Drop the prices a bit and I would be all over downloading lots of stuff.

Also, has anyone noticed how the release of new PSP games on the PSN has dwindled down to a trickle? Oh, how I regret 'upgrading' my PSP 3000 to the Go...

I'm still waiting for the original PSP to drop enough. Yes $100 is rather cheap, but I'd like to go cheaper. They've kept the prices up because of the scope of the platform.

PSP Go is entirely unappealing. One of the games on PSP I'd really like is Rock Band Unplugged, and the Go version of it IS cheaper but comes with like 5 songs and you have to buy ALL THE REST.

I don't think it was a bad idea until they decided to not support it with a steady flow of good games at a reasonable price.

also you can't say $599 was not worth the amount of stuff the PS3 can do.

No, it was worth it (it's why I paid 499 for mine) but it killed their image. Plus, Blu-ray wasn't a guaranteed lock in 2006. Most people were predicting that HD-DVD would win due to cost in the end.

Yea the price point was a little steep but I don't blame Sony. I think they should have put more into the then-current model of the PSP rather than switch to an all-digital PSP with games selling at the same price as their psychical copy brethren.

Good, Spiderman killers! Serves them right for ruining yet another one of my childhood memories by trashing it with another reboot. Sony is sad because they lost millions upon millions. Well, I paid full price as soon as the Ps3 was out and when my system died and I had warranty I was given a Ps2-less system which left me with 50+ Ps2 games just sitting there. I didn't suck it up and buy another system because I paid 800 dollars for the system with warranty and now I only plays Ps2 games and I didn't get any refund on the money, along with also having to go out and buy a plug that had two more ports, which cost me more money. Thanks Sony! They lost money! I say boo yah! In ya face mo'fo's! Maybe they would've made more money if they would stop changing dates on games like God of War 3 and Heavy Rain, or stop canceling exclusives that I'm hyped about like Eight Days and The Getaway. Hey here's an idea. Maybe they can make their money back by turning games like GOW 1 and 2 into an HD game along with others to make us re-buy them if we want to play them on our Ps3's? I think all the movie studios and game studios should just do one better and go to Naughty Dog and let them make all the decisions, because they seem to be one of the only companies not mucking stuff up.

Don't get me wrong, i kinda care about sales, but only about games sold. And not in a console-fanboy kinda way, it's more that i care if a developer or publisher does well enough to not go broke, or if a new IP does well to grant a sequel.

The big 3 only try to screw the consumer anyways.

Hi

The shares of Nintendo are so much and the lack of software sales on the PS2 resulted in the loss of approximately $700 million in revenue, while hardware sales have contracted another $150 million.

Sorry, got a little over-heated. I write and produced movies, get great reviews, awards and have a hard time getting studios to give me the time of day. Everyone blames Sam Raimi for Spiderman 3 and all the stuff that got crammed into it, including bad guys. Blame Sony for that. Raimi argued with them about not putting Venom in it yet and waiting. They didn't want to. Then a lot of people were angry at Raimi because they felt it was too much. So then Raimi says he won't come back for Spiderman 4 unless they give him full control over the film. They get Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst back. Raimi gives Bruce Campbell one of the big supporting parts in the film, rumors of Mysterio at the opening. The writer of one of the new Twilight films writes a script and Raimi says it's awful and Tobey doesn't like it either. Raimi also got John Malkovich as the lead villain for the film. Sony wanted Anne Hathaway (Princess Diaries), because she was cheaper. Raimi said no and Sony said goodbye to everyone and decided they are hiring new actors (cheaper) and a new upcoming director (cheaper). Here is where the news gets even better. They decided it has to be in 3-D because all the great movies are now. Who needs a story? And one of the main males up for the new high-school version of Spiderman is Robert Pattinson (vampire in Twilight). How's that for a story? I'm a little ticked since every few years or so everything has to be remade. Maybe when there are no movies or video games to remake...oops, sorry...reboot, I mean, then they'll start remaking systems like the they did with Final Destination...Final Destination 4...I mean THE Final Destination, which is part 4. How about in ten years after Playstation gets to 6 it goes back to The Playstation or The Playstation experience, lol. Okay, going to bed now. Now, I'm just ranting.

The PSP Go wasn't a stupid idea. It's the near-$300 price point that's killing it.

It also didn't help that the Go was underwhelming, lacking any sort of touchscreen interface and also not sporting the 2nd nub that alot of people were hopign for.

The PSP also hasn't had alot of strong titles coming out. The year before the ps3 came out, there were nearly too many to buy at once. Hopefully the fortunes turn but they have to work fast.

The second analog nub wouldn't help unless it was a next-gen PSP. Adding the second nub wouldn't magically add second nub support to the older games, and developers wouldn't add PSPgo-exclusive features to their games anyway considering its minuscule marketshare compared to the older PSP models.

kentuckyfried read the Spiderman 3 book. The novel is the actual screenplay and although far from perfect, it felt a lot more complete. The characters had more development and the ending made much more since. You add in more scenes with Sandman's daughter and have her as the reason he didn't kill Spiderman into the mix and his character makes a lot more sense to the story, along with some of the other things that got cut due to time. They could make 13 of anything and I would be happy as long as they're good and a purpose for it. I have yet to see that happen though. Usually more than two of anything is when the lines start to get crossed and it becomes more about the money. As for The Final Destination. I wouldn't even start to complain about the title as much as I would it being an awful film that was thrown together simply for the 3-D and repeated dialogue from the other films. lol, thanks kojo. I sincere enjoy your compliment. Maybe I should do it more often.

This just paints such a different picture then so many of the articles I saw this year decrying the plummet of Nintendo and the rise of the PSP and PS3... This is why I wish Joystiq would do more of these kinds of thoughtful sales analysis that you find on gamasutra or games industry.biz.

I'm glad to see they link to such articles at least though. It's just that some of the stuff this year would make me think Nintendo had hit a major wall and the wii was rapidly declining, yet it looks like they have more market share then they've had since the mid 90's... Although I guess in the early 00's they had more for a while with the DS boom.

I do think the PSP sells relatively strong, and people should cut it some slack sales wise.

How did they think that a $250 price-tag for technology that is 5 years old, a digital distribution model that doesn't allow discounts over time (i.e., when games get older and cheaper), and Not forcing companies to put their games through PSN (which would help combat pirates, along with firmware updates) would lead to "massive increased sales"?

I'm glad I bought my psp go through ebay, but I haven't been purchasing too many games because the cost for new games are too high. That, and my PSP 3000 gives me more access to more sales (retail/websites, obviously).

Here's hoping for more support for the handheld that "can do Everything", or just a more forward-looking handheld (incorporate the latest and best technology- not b-network wifi access and a processor that's weaker than a smartphone).
