For nine straight weeks, the UK's gamer populace has been mesmerized by the siren's song of Modern Warfare 2. Today, that's all changed, with the latest Chart-Track data showing a new entry usurping Modern Warfare 2's top spot: Just Dance. Ubisoft's quirky dance title for the Wii has enjoyed a level of success there we would never have thought possible. Can its performance be attributed to good advertising or simply the United Kingdom's unrestrained love of Kevin Bacon?
And MW2 wasn't even in the second spot, either. Wii Fit Plus managed to grab the silver, while Infinity Ward's shooter was bumped down to a respectable bronze. Newcomers Bayonetta and Darksiders also managed to stay on the list, along with Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed 2, which stealthily secured the tenth spot.

Hardcore gamer: Some who's main hobby is gaming. They buy and complete lots of games.
Casual gamer: Someone who has a CASUAL interest in gaming and doesn't spend as much time gamin as they do pursuing other interests. While depending on disposable income this group may also buy lots of games they very rarely complete them.

I like that description, but its slightly flawed by today's standards. There are more people into gaming then ever before.
For example, if you know you are working and can only dedicate a certain amount of time to gaming, would you be considered a hardcore or a casual, then you have to take into account the point I mentioned with those who play one game constantly and rarely switch unless something else takes thier interest, Halo gamers, WoW gamers.
I agree there is a definition between casual and hardcore, but I think the differences are becoming more minimal with the introduction of new tech, for example online. I know many so called 'casuals' who would put a full day into playing a game like the Sims, which is more then I a so called 'hardcore' gamer could muster. I mainly play games obsessivly when I get a new one or when I'm bored with everything else, I complete them and I play online, but I couldn't spend a whole day or even more then 5 hours playing, I'd eventually get bored of that and want to go do something else. Would I therefore be classed as a 'mid-gamer'? Someone who is casual but at the same time hardcore?

I think the best way to define and diffrenciate the two would be to just say a hardcore gamer puts gaming as their first priority over any other hobby.

I had almost thought the game was using a camera by the commercials turning you into this neo-dancing version of yourself- though it turns out to be more akin to that super basic wiiware game for arm flailings.
That said, it sounds like good embarrassing fun for friends to get together with - much like dance dance revolution and karaoke revolution.

I'm pretty sure no one expected MW2 to stay there for much longer after that big dominance, but to overtaken by Just Dance. Ha-ha!

Ubisoft was complaining so much about not being able to figure out the Wii, well here you go.

Casuals are people that judge a game mostly superficially. These are the people that play Wii Sports for 30 minutes a week (because they have only a casual interest in gaming and/or are busy people) and tell their friends it's the most amazing experience ever.
The rest of us who have more time to spend on games quickly find out that Wii Sports becomes boring after the honeymoon period is over. Most casuals do too, but after a much longer time, but by then the damage is already done and they have advertised the game to their friends via word-of-mouth, which is why these games sell so much, yet start to collect dust after a few weeks.
Those that aren't casuals, can be divided in two groups.
1. Dudebro casuals that buy games based mostly on advertising and what their friends have, but at least they buy good games and can tell the difference between a shitty game and a good game, they just don't care to investigate games that are less popular or that their friends don't have.
2. Guys like us here at Joystiq that read reviews etc. and use other means than advertising and friend feedback to guide their purchases.
