Valve has officially announced that 2K Games' BioShock 2 will be available for purchase on Steam -- you can pre-purchase the game right now, and it'll be unlocked for play on February 9, 2010, day and date with the rest of the world. The current price is $44.99, a slight discount from the boxed version, and that includes a Steam copy of the original BioShock as well, which you can "kindly" give to a friend if you happen to already have it. Or you can nab four licenses for you and three friends for $134.97, with each of you getting to play the original also.
Sure, it's a good deal if you're not concerned with "discs" or "physical media," but does it come with a vinyl LP of the game's original soundtrack? Didn't think so, boy-o.

I am very impressed by the story in this game.
So much so that it's hard for me to believe that it can top the first. But, I'm definitely going to get this just to see if it's possible.
I'm really interested to see how the Multiplayer will fair. It was requested by some fans (I personally didn't care), and it's going to be very ironic if the game fails to deliver due to the devs listening to fans about adding it into a rather single player experience.

The multiplayer and single player are done by two seperate studios. No need to worry about that.

Doesnt that mean that you get to download the full game except for a few key components needed to play it?

The entire thing downloads, it's just locked. So you have to wait for steam's severs to unlock it, and there have been a few titles that didn't unlock right away when they were supposed to, but not too often.
So, not too bad, and you get to play the first Bioshock right away with this offer.

Pre-purchasing doesn't necessarily mean you can pre-load it.

what's the point of pre-ordering a download?....

The point is that you can usually pre-download the game before it releases.
So whenever they flick the switch to release the game, you can start playing right away, instead of waiting for it to download.

Whenever I see this game, I kinda feel depressed. While I loved the idea of returning to Rapture back in 2007, I feel that the game they're releasing is nothing more than a sequel made for the simple fact of making some money off the original's name.
I'll still probably play the game though, just the hype isn't there. Could be for the better though.

I don't know. I'm a firm believe in the idea that you can never have too much of a good thing.
And Rapture is definitely a good thing.
And I believe the original plan was for there to be 6 games in this universe. I'm sure that's not so much the cae now.

I agree, making a sequel to BioShock, without the original development team is pretty much in the exact same vein as making stuff like FF7: Advent Children and FF7: Dirge of Cerberus.
I also dislike how they seem to be trying nothing new (except multiplayer of course, duur), and keep turning the whole series into a narrow characture by focusing entirely on Big Daddy/Little Sister. It's like they're completely ignoring all the other qualities of the original game.

Hi Mike,
Does Valve give you kickbacks for ignoring all of the other online stores or something? I'm just trying to understand the logic behind mentioning that steam has it for pre-order but not direct2drive. It's the same price and you also get a copy of Bioshock 1 with the pre-order, so what gives? Please help us understand, does Valve give you guys money for linking to them and ignoring other vendors, or did IGN/Direct2Drive wrong you somehow? Did they leave a flaming bag of poop on your doorstep this past Halloween or something?

Direct2Drive? Who's that?
Face it, Steam is the market for downloadable PC games.

The PC fanbase is largely on steam and not D2D. It makes more sense to point the readers in the direction of the service they actually use.

@CaramelZappa,
I never suggested not mentioning steam, rather they should mention all the venues it's available at, otherwise it amounts to nothing more than a free ad for Steam. Unless valve paid joystiq for this post, in which case joystiq has a responsibility (I do believe by law nowadays) to disclose that fact.
That said, I don't really care as much as these posts probably make it seem like I do; mostly I'm just curious to hear an explanation from a joystiq staffer regarding these frequent seemingly free advertisements for steam.

Yeah, it seems pretty easy to add a little note at the end with "It's also on Direct 2 Drive".

D2D's not so bad. I like Steam more, but D2D throws together some decent sales and specials once in awhile. The consumer always wins when there's a little competition.
If you pay attention to both you can find a lot of great deals. And that's why it's nice to hear about both, even if you prefer one over the other.

It does look amazing, and I'd be willing to take the leap of faith for if it were a little cheaper. $100 is a little too expensive for me.

Is this even going to be any good? we have heard so little, and it's being made by a different team, and they are adding mulitplayer? i can't just feel the suck. The first one was so good and it had a class 8 hype train behind it! (*ref note: MW2 was a class 11 hype train.) I hate to use that lame-ass analogy of the "Citizen Kane" of games, but if there is one its bioshock.

I did see a forum post where someone got Bioshock 1 anyway even tho his region didn't support it. Might want to look into it though. You can gift a game to a country its not available in, kinda like how Aussie gamers can play the uncensored version of L4D2 if they get someone from the US to gift it to them. The free copy of Bioshock 1 is a gift from steam, so in theory it should work and apparently does.

How come my Steam says, and i'll copy paste: "$71.99 USD" which is discounted from $79.99 USD. Games like L4D2 and Dragon Age Origins are still $49.99 USD as they have been since launch, but somehow i can see Bioshock 2 at at higher price. I can also see the new Aliens vs Predator at $64.99 USD. Is that the same as what people in the US can see.

Upon looking into it, it looks as thought some Steam games are following closer to the normal AUS retail price. Our normal retail price for games is $99.95 AUS (about $91 USD). Our price includes all taxes, plus the extra cost of distributing a game to a further away continent with a smaller gaming population, so we've been used to that price for over a decade, but the reason Steam was such incredible value is games were displayed in there standard USD retail price of about $49.99. This allowed Aussie Steam users to save a fortune on PC games bought through Steam by buying online and paying a straight currency conversion. Why Bioshock 2 and AvP are different is beyond me is expecially odd since Mass Effect 2 for example is still $49.99 USD.....
