GDC Awards nominees announced, Drake leads the pack

We've just received a press release revealing which titles will be vying for top honors at the 10th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards, held in conjunction with GDC 2010 on March 11. If you're not familiar with the show, picture the Kids Choice Awards, only ... with video game developers choosing the winners instead of teenagers. Or, alternatively, imagine the VGAs, only without all the half-naked women, pot references and awards named after highly caffeinated soft drinks.

You'll see some familiar names on the full list of nominees posted after the jump. Uncharted 2 netted seven nominations, Flower managed to grab five, and Assassin's Creed II ended up with four. Will Ezio be snubbed by Nathan once more in the Game of the Year runnings? We'll find out at GDC!

Yeah, but it's not without it's flaws. Just like the academy awards, the projects that had the most people working on it get nominated, naturally.

People bitch about MW2 because of Activision and IW's arrogance this time around. Plus the online is a buggy mess. People may get tired of all the U2 talk, but I think most people like Naughty Dog as a developer. FWIW, I don't bitch about MW2.

Roger, because MW2 has a terrible story, unbalanced multiplayer, and a less than stellar campaign. Where as Uncharted doesn't.

Because it was 1 with better graphics, and 1 wasn't that special. What was so special about this game? It was a solid game with a cheesy, Michael Bay-type storyline. Entertaining game, sure, but not a landmark life changing universe shattering game.

There isn't, but you would think otherwise after listening to some of these Sony fanboys talk about it. Probably the most overhyped game in recent memory, dunno if it beats out GTA 4's hype though.

TMac, man I'm related to Sir Francis Drake, seriously, but I guess that's just my personal thing. Anyway, I enjoyed the story. Too many games these days that we get generic old crap stories such as the tired "war" games, but now, because of Uncharted, we have a well-told ADVENTURE, a genre we need more of. Be honest with yourself, since when have we seen a "junglish adventure" so good since Tomb Raider?

Once again tmac shows his stunning ignorance of gaming.

I'll indulge you with this - simply on a technical level Uncharted 2 is leagues beyond Mass Effect, and if you don't see or understand that simple fact there is no help for you.

And I've said many times ME is probably my fave game this gen. Please refer me to a more complete and polished action/adventure game than U2 so I can have a good laugh.

Ok, I agree that Uncharted 2 was probably the best game of the year (personal favorite was Dragon Age, but I hold no illusions that it being the "best").

At the same time, WHAT IS UP WITH THE BACKLASH AT MW2? The story is awful, but the campaign is great fun as is Spec Ops. Yeah, there were glitches in multiplayer, but nothing to really impede my fun and I have friends who have poured days worth of playtime into the game and they have almost no complaints. The weapon and perk balancing is great and the gameplay is absolutely solid. (Also, I know and agree that Infinity Ward and Activision are terribly unlikeable, but this shouldn't take away from the achievement of the game).

Because Modern Warfare 2 was not overhyped in any way, right? Or Gears of War 2. Or Halo 3. Or KillZone 2.

Seriously, who was Uncharted 2 overhyped by? I heard little to no buzz outside of the gaming community, while all the games I mentioned above where getting "BEST GAME EVA" treatment before their releases.

People celebrating U2's story and script makes me think how far video games still have to go, because that story is literally as good as a typical summer hollywood action blockbuster.

It was fun to sit through, as an action movie is, but I didn't leave Transformers 2 saying "man that was one of the best stories I've ever seen". It's almost as bad as the whole "oscar worthy story" reviews from GTA 4.

Hypocrite is hypocritical. What is Mass Effect 2 if not a 3rd person shooter with shittier combat and boring branching dialogue? If Uncharted 2 is nothing but a shitty pop-corn flick then Mass Effect 2 is like a shitty knockoff of Battlestar Gallactica. Neither of those statements are true but one isn't true if the other isn't ... period. You can't shit on Uncharted 2 without REALLY shitting on Mass Effect 2.

It couldn't of played out any better, could it? I ain't pre-ordering shit from Gamestop but I'll be enjoying me some Mass Effect 2 next week. Picked up a slick gaming laptop last week! Quad core with a nice enough (though not super high end) graphics card and it plays blu-ray movies to boot.

LOL... that's a bold claim considering the first game made RE games look like they have stellar combat systems. That was my biggest annoyance with the first ME (followed closely by elevators). It was like they wanted to have real time fighting, but completely half-assed the implementation. I just got sick of it after a while.

This one has much better combat than 1. Anyone who's paid attention to it at all, let alone how much i've focused on it would know that.

IMO people aren't giving Uncharted 2 the credit it deserves is because it's console exclusive. This same thing happened with GoW2 when GTA IV came out before it. There were a lot of nay-sayers that were 50/50 on if GTAIV or GoW2 was better. But what do you expect when about 1/2 the people that think MW2 is a great game haven't played Uncharted 2.

I've had the privilege of playing both and Uncharted 2's campaign has to be in the top 3 best single-player campaigns at all time. And the multi-player is great too. Both of these games are good so there's no sense in going back and forth.

MW2 took a series that is primarily multi-player and gave it an awesome single-player campaign. Uncharted 2 was a great single-player game that added a great mult-player. If anything both of these games raised the ladder for competition so everyone should be happy. This is pushing the industry forward where now we can expect a great single-player and awesome multi-player out of our most anticipated games.

Since I didn't care for ME I haven't followed ME2 all that closely. Although I did hear that they improved the combat system. I have a hard time believing it will be better than U2 though, at least as far as gun play goes. Given how bad the first game was I'll have to actually try ME2 first before I'll believe they've actually fixed it that much.

So, GDC Awards are like the equivalent of the Video Game Oscars, while the Spike VGAs are like the MTV movie Awards?

I've never cared about any of these individual conference awards. I've pretty much given up on all awards though, as they never go to games that deserve them. Only goty list/awards I care about are my own.

We know that you can't stand Sony and the PS3 but to constantly cruise PlayStation tagged posts and throw in comments about PC/360 games suggest that you are trying to drum up trouble.
