Bad Ideas: Trying to make a 3rd person action game after Uncharted 2

That's like saying, why make a movie about guns and violence after a movie about guns and violence just came out.

Why the hell does anyone care if developers make games that don't appeal to them?

and people wondered why Uncharted fanboys piss me off. Comments like this are why.

I'm just saying, no matter what it's going to face endless comparisons to Uncharted 2 and will continually fall short of the line people have made in their heads where Uncharted 2 sits. It will continually be "not be good enough".

But okay, scream about fanboys and whatever.

Bad Idea: Making Kane & Lynch 2 instead of Freedom Fighters 2.

Fixed, original statement had a bit too much fanboy in it. You're welcome.

Yes, Uncharted is a phenomenal game. But, just because it was great doesn't mean everything else is gonna be crap.

Animal House was a great comedy movie... should they have stopped making comedies after that? Heck no!

Every time I see news about K&L2 my first thought is always, "How the hell did the first game do well enough to warrant a sequel?"

oddly enough.. it is not so surprising to me. i have and still own the first one. its obvious the game needs a sequel. plus kane and lynch are great characters.. its fitting to have them in a new game with a potentially better ending. i smell a sequel to the sequel(Trequel? idk..) that may very well complete & hopefully perfect the Kane & Lynch saga. but thats just me hoping. overall.. it has nothing to do with if the first was good or not. look at army of two.. its on the same level as K&L.

Offtopic - coincidence their sequels have some striking similarities?

I have a feeling the only redeeming quality of this game will be that Gertsmann can't get fired from it this time.

In terms of presentation this looks really interesting, maybe they'll finally nail the Michael Mann aesthetic they were going for with the first game. Let's just hope the gameplay gets as much attention.

Wait, wasn't the first Kane & Lynch a commercial and critical failure?

Depends how you define failure. Critically it was average (for what it is worth, Metacrtic 65) and it didn't sell bad (according to VGChartz ~1.4 mio on 360 and PS3). Sufficient for a sequel I assume, in the end Tomb Raider:Underworld sold despite its comparably strong brand and better critical reception only 400.000 units more on those two platforms and the last Hitman game seems not to have done much better.

"The cover system looks improved over the original's, introducing blind fire and the ability, when downed, to crawl to cover (and regain health once there)."

there was blind firing in the first kane & lynch.

Agreed. Freedom Fighters 2 would be a much better idea. The original was awesome and way under-appreciated.

Did they manage to fix the jerky aiming system in the first one that made it felt like I was controlling Gumby?

Hello from Eidos. Yep, the guys at IO looked at all the comments on the first game and have revamped the aiming controls and cover system :)

The presentation sounds pretty awesome in theory (even though I hate that shaky-cam shit in my action movies, admittidly), but it probably wont be enough to get me to lay down some hard earned space bucks for the game

It sort of depends on how it's done. I thought it was over-the-top in the Bourne films (as good as they are). It's more subtly done in Firefly and Galactica, where they use documentary-style camera techniques to add a layer of realism to a SF universe. That I like.

In a game? I could see it working, though given the first outing of Kane & Lynch, I don't have a ton of faith in the development team to pull it off.

I loved what K&L tried to do but the horrible aiming system, unfinished moronic AI and not perfect graphics, which all could have been attained, made me dissappointed then and a bit shocked 2 has been made. Here's to the game gods that they don't fuck this one up right before the finishing line.

Plus one though on the obvious online co-op making it this time.

Oh great idea. Let's make an action game using just stationary cameras, like they did ten years ago. Also, it seemed to work great for Gears.

Shacking when a grenade blows up is fine, even running around. But do you really need to shake the camera for no fucking reason? No. It just looks amateurish.

The original Kane & Lynch didn't quite set the critical world on fire. It had some control issues and could have used a bit more polish to truly shine, but it did introduce a pair of intriguing and ugly characters as well as a unique multiplayer mode.British Army Rations
