According to an anonymous source speaking to VG247, the PlayStation Motion Controller will officially be called "Arc" by the time it launches. It was previously codenamed "Gem," with rumors also dubbing it "Sphere" at one stage. As expected, Sony declined to comment on the story.
You know what, Sony? Stop it. You may think you're building suspense here, but all you're doing is creating a lot of work for bloggers who'll have to go back and re-tag all these posts when you reveal the real name. Oh, don't you skulk away, Microsoft, we're including you on this too. If it's Natal, fine, if not, just pick something already. Both of you. Now. Choose.
Go ahead.
We'll wait.

I think they should call it "Placeholder." However, I will settle for "$OFFICIAL_NAME."
Too bad no one will get my joke, because no one here knows Unix shell scripting. And I know this is true, because no one has made any comment about my username here.

What the hell? I got an F-bomb and downvotes because I lamented that my joke would not be understood? Where in my post did I say, "You all suck because you don't work as a nameless soul in an IT job"? Surely, I must have gone and insulted everyone if I got this reaction, but I don't see it.
For the record, I don't read Engadget. And, I'm afraid I don't know PHP. PSP, yes; PHP, no; PPP, no; PCP . . . no.
LDS, yes.

Why is it that think just because people aren't making comments about your oh-so-clever user name that nobody knows UNIX shell scripting? Great, your user name is killdashKILL, you win the internets.

Okay, lesson learned: don't talk about Unix on Joystiq. I didn't realize it was such a touchy subject. I've made comments before on Joystiq that I thought would get downvoted, but not this one.
JerJerBinks, I just figured someone might recognize the pun and at least say, "Dude, your username is so lame." Similar stuff has happened to me elsewhere ("I've never seen anyone use a database command as their username"). It seemed reasonable to expect something like that here. Guess not.

I'm just curious, why is it so important to you that you get upvoted/downvoted?

If I were downvoted because I spread inaccurate information or advertised my website or made a personal attack on someone, I would understand. The reason I am continually responding to my own post here is because I feel the downvoting I am receiving here is not justified. It's sort of like when Bradwart kept getting downvoted just because he posted often.
I go out of my way to be objective and polite in online communities. Apparently, people took what I wrote to be an elitist comment (and I apologize for that; again, I do *not* read any IT-related websites/communities), and they expressed their disapproval with numerous replies and downvotes. It is not the downvoting itself which concerns me, but rather the perception that I am insulting everyone, which is, I believe, the source of the downvoting.
At this point, I can see there is nothing left to salvage. Sorry for taking up so much of the comment section.

Has anyone asked Sony how the "Arc" "Gem" whatever thingy uses depth perception? The Wii Sensor Bar creates two lights that the Wiimote uses to know if it is getting closer or farther away, obviously the Natal uses two camera to measure depth perception to know if something is getting closer or farther... So how does the Sony thing do it with one camera, and one ball?
Also with the Wiimote, the camera is in your hand, it's easy for the system to detect minor gestures and movements cause the camera is in your hand... kinda like a bad shakycam. With the Sony thing, the camera is mounted and minor movements might be picked up as easily depending on how far away you are from the TV. Least with the Natal both cameras can see 3D space to maybe help with that, but even then, in every video I've seen... seems people with Natal are doing very wild big movements.
Just am sorry I think Sony has the worst idea for motion controls, I don't see how it over comes those hurdles unless it expects you to only be a few feet from the television.

The PSEye can already do that. Didn't you see the 1:1 E3 demos? You won't have to buy Arc Plus to get 1:1.

Nintendo's answer wasn't to good either... was the best, but not good. Cause normally if you rotate the Wiimote anywhere close to center point, it's hard for the Wiimote to know what direction it's actually facing (or being tilted in) unless the camera in the Wiimote is looking at the sensor bar. That's what Wiimotion Plus was for, if you have two points you then have a line... and a line helps you create direction. It's basic math.
And if you have 6 points you get a pinpoint location and a 7th point creates a point of origin... I learned that from the original Stargate movie.

Yeah we also saw a little boy take drawings out of our hand and tell us our name and that we what color clothes we were wearing at E3... am not all that positive and drooling in excitement till real people get their hands on it. Or maybe I'm the only who remembers the exciting and accurate controls of the PS3 game Lair.
And how in the world is this what the Wii should have had from the start? Seems to me the Wiimotion Plus is what the Wii shoulda had from the start. Everything I've heard is the motion control finally works right with Wiimotion Plus, I wouldn't know, I haven't bought Wiisports Resort yet.

"The uniform spherical shape and known size of the light also allows the system to simply determine the controller's distance from the PlayStation Eye through the light's image size, thus enabling the controller's position to be tracked in three dimensions"
Yes your right, that part I figured out is it measures the ball size... I didn't need to read wikipedia for that. But what I want to know is what it's max range then, yeah from two or three feet away I can tell with my eyes something is getting closer or farther based only on it's size... but five or six feet away is another story. That's the reason why humans and most every other animal has two eyes, is for depth perception, to help us know if something is getting closer and farther without having to say "Hey how big is that right now?"

No I'm saying that I am not exactly hopeful of ANYONES motion controls or alot of tech demos from E3 from any company at this point. That includes Microsoft.
About a week or two later, Microsoft said the Milo demo was setup and only a concept of what they wanted, meaning it was staged.
So when people say, or it worked at E3 for Sony, not exactly excited to hear that either.

It can only be an improvement on the shit that is the Wii mote controls. Talk about a huge letdown ... I'm not the person that can tell you how it's going to work but from all the live (not staged like MS) demonstrations they've shown it looks like a winner. The Wii mote is one of the most overhyped and underperforming devices I've ever used. What a waste of time ... thats with motion plus.
