- Game Informer (70/100): "Unfortunately, the shining strengths of the game are buried underneath a thick layer of rust that only the thirstiest of air-junkies should bother chipping through." [Feb 2010, p.95]
- 1UP (C+): "It begins with a fantastic introduction to flight, and ends with an all-out aerial dogfight followed by a suitably epic boss battle. ... It's just a damn shame that the nigh-amazing 'The Rocketeer versus UFOs' premise crashes hard into 'tepid Gears of Uncharted knock-off' ground."
- IGN (50/100): "I don't hate Dark Void, but I don't care for it, either. This is one of those titles that just exists; I doubt few will remember it this time next year."
- Wired (40/100): "Even though some stages (like the penultimate aerial battle) felt like they lasted forever and ever, Dark Void is a pretty short game with an anticlimactic ending that does little more than set up a sequel ... In all other respects, Dark Void was an ambitious project that just didn't make it off the ground."
Metareview: Dark Void

We didn't love Dark Void, but with an average metacritic score of 59, it looks like the review sites just laid into Capcom's latest franchise attempt, despite its cool premise. The highest score so far actually comes from Playstation: The Official Magazine, which gave the game an 80. Here's what other outlets thought of Dark Void:

Anyone play this yet? I keep hearing it's like the new Bionic Commando but with a jet pack instead.

Thats exactly what it is, sans the absurd "replay but disable achievements" issue, awkward swinging, and badly implemented challenge system.
So its actually a little better. Nolan North (drake from uncharted and other games) does the main character's voice, and that's always a win there. It's a rental though.

I had high hopes for this game until I played the demo... Then I thought it would at least be worth a rental until I read the reviews.

Honestly, I have enjoyed the game. Granted, I didn't pay $60, but nothing about it is broken or deserves a 50 or below rating. It has tech issues, such as framerate stutters and pop-in, which we all know the Unrea Engine 3 is known for. It's a pretty solid, yet entirely average, game, though. I can understand how some would think it's mediocre, because it does fall short in a lot of areas, especially with such talent behind it, but despite that, it's still a rather enjoyable and fun 8 hours. Rent it and give it a try if you think you'd enjoy it. Believe me, the full game is better than the demo. The demo was a really bad taste and didn't even really show that entire section.
I'd give Dark Void a 7.0/10.

Neither. I pre-ordered with a $15 promo code during a B2G1 50% off deal, which made it $15 brand new.

I'm playing through it and will give my review later.
It's got some rough edges, but nothing that has me entirely bored (yet).

I'm afraid for Dead Rising 2. Maybe Capcom should stick with Japanese Dev's :( .

Capcom should stick to Street Fighter and "Rearmed" games. I want to see MegaMan "Rearmed". Every other game released by Capcom has been a PoS, and every one of them had tremendous potential. I'm officially writing Capcom off. They make good games bad.
And I see nothing on the horizon. Lost Planet 2? Meh. Super Street Fighter? OK, but I'll wait for a major discount on that one.
Get on the MegaMan "Rearmed", Capcom!

Eh not surprised by these luke warm reviews. So many other games on my radar that I rather play than this. I don't think those are horrible scores just your average score for a new IP that hopefully will sell enough for a sequel.
When it hits the bargin bins at $20 I'll check it.

I'll pick it up when I can find it for 20 bucks, because I enjoyed the demo, but I wouldn't pay any more for it. it should hit bargain bin prices pretty quickly, especially with the sales it might have been getting going to this awesome first quarter

Horrible reviews, i dont understand why developers do bad games, if it sucks just scrap it and start on something else

It's about cash flow and trying to recover some of your investment, mostly. At what point in the development cycle does it become clear that you don't have a great game on your hands? By that time, you've already dumped in a lot of money. The decision is then whether or not to spend even more money trying to polish it up, or to simply push it out of the nest and see if it can flap a few times before hitting the ground.
(If I may be permitted a non-jetpack flight analogy here...)

I stand by my statement that the latest games Nolan North have been in (aside from Uncharted, apparently) have gotten mediocre reviews.

And this makes you hate Nolan North why? He isn't responsible for the development of the game.

i guess that makes sense, the flying parts in the demo felt very similar to crimson skies. i enjoyed that game quite a bit. i wouldn't be surprised if they felt the need to add in a shooter element to this game to try and sell more. what a shame.

And i dug it - enough to give it a 4 out of 5 over at pixelverdict.com. Go figure. Sometimes i think i'm out there all alone when it comes to my game tastes.

this is far too common now and is killing games. Stop trying to make trilogies from the beginning, seriously. Make a game, and if people actually want a sequel, THEN decide to do it.

I was watching this but given what people (critics and others) are saying about it I'll wait till it drops to $30 (like I did with Turok) before I grab a copy (btw Turok wasn't half bad).

Watched a buddy play the demo and was completely unimpressed. The guy is wearing a jetpack, he should be going hundreds of mph. Instead, he just kind of slowly floats around. This looks okay when he's high above everything, but when close to land or stationary objects, he should be *zooming* past. It reminded me of Colony Wars but without the fun.
