NPD: Wii Play is best selling 'game' of all time in the US

I, like 95% of all other consumers, only got this because it came with a controller. Hell, if Xbox360 had a package with one wireless controller and Viva Piñata for just a tad more, I'd get it.

Well ive been buying wii plays and selling the controllers to my friends for slightly under the wii remote RRP, so im making money :P

I only got it because it was on sale at the time for $40; same price as a controller.

By now my copy of the 'game' is taking up space in a GameStop somewhere. I usually keep my trade-ins to a minimum but leaving GS stuck with another copy of Wii Play was strangely cathartic.

Namco Museum is number 10? Where did that come from?

This is so stupid. They sell a remote, an almost required item for the full Wii experience, throw in a shitty game, and it's "the best selling game of all time." Give me a break.

The choice is a controller or a controller bundled with a game that looks like Wii Sports. Tough decision.

Oh, and the games kinda suck.

To be fair, this is like saying Spider Solitaire is the best selling PC game of all time.

Wii Play is probably the most brilliant idea ever. Wii Play is basically a handful of tech demos/shit that they created long ago and couldn't do anything with. So they can either just leave it at that OR they can make some little touch-ups to it and actually sell it to people. But who the hell would buy that? No one would. So what do they do? They put it in a box with a Wii controller. Everyone is going to end up buying at least one extra controller, so why not just buy the one that comes with a free game? It's only a couple bucks more.

I wonder if it sold more than Xbox 360 or PS3 controllers did.

This controller/game combo has sold well for sure, but it's hard to say it was entirely because of the game or entirely because of the controller.

I think there are those who bought this because of the controller and I think there are those who bought this because of the game, and there are those who bought this because it came with both. We'll never know for sure, but the bundle did appeal to a lot of people. Whatever the case, there's always going to be that asterisk next to 'best selling game' that says, this was a bundle that included a controller.

I mainly bought it for the controller, but our family has gotten some fun from the cow racing and the shooting game. Other than that, we don't tend to play it too often.

This is cheating... nobody buys Wii Play for Wii Play. They buy it for the Wiimote and the cheap $10 game that comes with it.

It's sad the best selling game of all time in the US is a game Nintendo put little effort into making.

You don't realize how much of a ripoff Wii Play is until you compare it to things you could have bought on PSN/WiiWare/Live with that ten dollars. A terrible game and sadly more proof that many people put low price before quality.

Proof that value sells most of all, i guess, since it can be comfortably said that the controller was the anchor in that case, rather than the software (which is rather the opposite for most of these bundled games, where its the software that gets you to pony up for the plastic)

a new record high for nintendo, a new record low for gaming. seriously, this tech demo had my attention for all of 30 minutes.

Man what's the problem with this game? It cannot fucking die. It robs the spot of other more important games. and if it gets thrown aside from the #1 spot, it comes back with a vengeance. Wii Play is the game version of the T1000. Hell this game can even be turned into a 24 million hitpoints Super Boss.

Surely New Super Mario Bros. should be in this list? Hasn't that sold about 8 million or something in the USA? I would've thought that would easily be in there.
