Hmm Well the PS3 Got released in Nov 06 (FALL),
the slim in Sept 09 (FALL),
and now the Motion controller is going to be in the same quarter (FALL)

(JUST BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS)

I think it is more of profit and sales (and also more games would be available)

sony-motion controller on its 'designing phase' was a bit more exhilarating than this one. Before, it was called the 'orb', 'gem' and now an arc.. perhaps, next it'll be called as a magic stick.. lol. http://tiny.cc/motioncontrol but I'm still crossing my fingers that they do change the design of the stick....

To be honest, I don't think either Natal or Sphere will do well at all. The Wii was the market for that, and everyone who was interested already has one.

I don't see Natal being fun at all, if there isn't anything tangible (swinging a sword by moving just your hand isn't very fun), it just doesn't feel right. And as for Sphere, they're just ripping off the Wii, and they know a nunchuk would work best but instead they're using a two-handed controller single-handedly to do everything else. The only thing it has going for it is that it actually tracks the location and isn't just an accelerometer.

I think millions of little boys will disagree with you on the whole swinging your hand to swing a sword as few boys don't like play sword fighting and you have swing your hand to swing the sword.

But again, it's funner to use something tangible. To use the sword fighting example again, it is funner to swing sticks at each other than nothing at all.

I disagree with you,
1) the PS3 controller is very accurate and the device does not have to pointed directly to the camera(i.e there is no IR so)
Also, the issue that Natal wont be fun by claiming swinging a sword is not fun by swinging a hand is the wrong way to look at it. Its a peripheral and its application is meant for a particular experience not every experience. If you saw Just Dance, it was recently UK's largest selling video game for this week. Now something like Natal will actually work a lot better and has the potential to even better than the Wii for that kinda experience.
Your view point while consistent with most readers of Joystiq is pretty narrow and more importantly not in line with the majority of buyers. Games are important and casual games whether you like it or not is actually more important to the industry than hardcore games.

@Arnie, you brought up a lot of valid points on your arguments about motion controllers, and I agree with them. However, your remark on the whole casual games being more important to the growth of the video games industry, is something I have a hard time comprehending though.

Perhaps you mean innovation instead, as too many gimmicky, quick for cash and wannabe type titles -- as seen on the Wii -- can be detrimental to the growth of the gaming industry. Risking a scenario of over flooding and diluting the gameing industry as a whole. I don't mind innovation, so long as it's fun, and not rushed to cash in on the whole 'new' gimmick factor.

Is there any reason you can't pick up that stick and use it with Natal?

Expect a full line of plastic sword, gun, etc peripherals just like they have for the Wii, only this time the markup will be even more stupid since you could literally use anything. Just go to walmart and buy a plastic sword for 94 cents and viola, now you have something tangible.

Hell, you could even buy a plastic lightsaber and use it in a non-star wars game. Like, you could totally kill zombies with a lightsaber.

Both motion controllers have their pros and cons. Its gonna be the software that determines which one sells better. Probably why both companyies arre holding out till they can release it with good games.

There hasn't been a single demonstration with Natal showing that you can pick up an object and use it. The Burnout demo may have worked a lot better if you had a physical wheel to hold on to. My guess is that this would have messed up the capture points.

The very nature of how Natal uses capture points and maps them to on screen actions may preclude the use of objects and peripherals. Natal bases movement on mapping a 16 point skeleton to a body. Natal must recognize all 16 points to function. Putting a sword in your hand would change the position of the skeletal capture points.

Unless you use an object that has been pre-programmed into the mocap system. Meaning that you might only be able to use exclusive Microsoft objects. $120 Natal motion sword anyone???

Well, Vcize , its true you could hold anything if you want something tangible, but Im pretty sure that one thing doesnt have sensors so it can track not only your arms movement, but wrist angles in such accurate way.

I mean, Natal can do great, but move your wrist and figure out how good a camera will track that.

I wonder if this is for development reasons, games, or if they just want more time to run a proper marketing campaign like Microsoft has with Natal? Maybe a combination of all of those.

File this under "Color me surprised, guys!"

Seriously, we don't hear about the thing since E3 2009 aside from a couple rumors about what it could be named. They missed a chance to showcase what they have at CES this year seeing how 3D immersion is the next big thing apparently, but came up with nothing. But now it's just laughable I think, and kind of stinks for anyone who actually had mild interest in what Sony could be doing.

Though with this delay, E3 will be the "Showdown of the awkward motion controller promos."

Yeah, everybody saw this coming. 2 Publishers in the gaming industry that consistently have problems in making their target dates for games and such: Take 2 and SCE. Still, I think they're 2 of the best out there.

Its too bad though, because I think we're all feeling the storm of marketing MS will be bringing to Halo: Reach and Natal, based on how much MS hyped them up at E3 and CES. Nothing Sony can hope to match up to, really.

Im still waiting for Sony and MS to announce their "killer app" for their respective motion peripherals. If they dont have their "Wii Sports" type of game, that proves just how awesome their controllers are, then they're both going to fail.

Good. I can't wait to get my hands on it, but if delaying it means it launches with better support, I'm all for that.

(I have a feeling I might be in the minority here, not just in terms of being satisfied with a delay, but actually wanting to try the PlayStation Motion Controller.)

They would BLOW the lid off of E3 if they announced some type of exclusive deal with Lucas Arts for the Star Wars: Force Unleashed 2 using the PMC!! (If you noticed in the new Force Unleashed 2 teaser he's DUAL wielding light sabers) Imagine the possibilities...Giggty!!
