Yeah they should be building their first party lineup more. Imagine how many core games they could have made with all the money wasted on this garbage.

I guess since they sell a ridiculous amount of first and third party software they don't think they need more exclusives :\

They definitely need more first party titles if they plan to stay ahead of Sony. Seriously, in a year when your competitor finally gets their head out of their butt, and you only have a Halo expansion and Forza 3? And L4D2 as the only third party exclusive?

Right. Because innovation in gaming is a bad idea. MORE TEH HALOZ PLS!

Sheesh, you guys are dumb.

I'm not a fan of waggle-based shovelware -- few readers of this site are -- but I recognize that Natal is an incredible opportunity to revolutionize the home entertainment experience. If it were as little as an update that let me navigate the dashboard in a cool, gesture-based way, I'd be impressed. If it's something that gets me out of my ass to have fun, I'd be impressed. And if it adds unforeseen/unplanned dimensions and layers of depth to games I've already played and loved, I'll be impressed.

People like you look at something like this, assume you're brilliant enough to -- on your own -- realize the entire universe of possibilities, and qualified enough to cast it away as "garbage" or a waste of time. Try some modesty, try some humility, and try realizing that there could be more -- way more -- than your rather limited minds can grasp nearly a YEAR before this thing launches.

Doofuses.

I've seen far too many 'revolutionary' devices come and go, all promising the world and all failing. Remember the Segway? Yeah.

Look at the history of console add-ons. Sega CD? "All new interactive experiences". Yeah, that went well. 32X? Died from a poor program base. Turbo CD? Poor program base.

Do I need to go on?

This would be perfect if they threw in a free big harddrive it wouldn't actually cost them THAAAT much with all the extra money they've been getting from the current high priced HDs.

Look at it from MS perspective though. They'll win the multiplatform sales competition every time outside of fighting games, and that Halo expansion stood toe-to-toe sales wise with every exclusive that Sony pumped out. They're definitely pushing more game copies. Now they go into next year with a strong lineup on console exclusives with Natal rounding out the fall.

What you completely FAIL to realize Bradwart in your brilliant punditry, is that we are in the year 2010. Shits kinda changed since 1994. This is why people like Phil Spencer is at where he is, and you are just some guy on the Internets.

But then again, it's Microsoft.

Good point petey but I just cant see myself flapping my hands around like an idiot. You mention changing and scrolling through menus while swiping your hands, that just doesn't sound practical at all. If I'm searching for a demo on the marketplace and I'm waving my hands around I'm going to look and feel like an idiot.

I think thats most peoples problem with it looking like an idiot while playing video games. I'm 31 years old and my wife gives me enough hell as it is...

All that matters from a controller is that you forget your using it. There are lots of controls that achieve this including dual-analog.

I don't know what makes you say that when every game still uses it. Even all of your precious nintendo games still use traditional controls more than waggle.

Little King's Story, probably my favorite wii game so far, doesn't have an ounce of waggle that I'm aware of. Which is probably why it's most likely to get ported to the other consoles.

They REALLY need to make there own First-party games, and not buy timed exclusive/multiplat third party games

@the innovation subject: For every "failed" innovation, there are plenty of leaps forward to the tune of Xbox Live or CD format. To scoff at the notion of what Natal can do as far as interfacing with your games goes is to scoff at every proposed idea in the history of gaming. Natal isn't just "waggle", as detractors so eloquently put it. No, it can be much more than that. Natal is setting the foundation of direct interfacing. Of course it probably won't be fully realized this generation, but I like the idea of walking into my room and waving towards my TV or something, and my Xbox Cubed or whatever lights up. Or opening the disc drive with a snap of my fingers.

It's the future, bitch.

@the games w/ multiplayer subject: Multiplayer increases the longevity of games. Deal.

@Halo's innovation (and perceived lack thereof): No console game yet has such dedicated stat tracking, recorded videos with playback, saving, sharing, picture capturing and format changing options, real time level editing, or such endless customization options for multiplayer. The gameplay may not be for you, but Halo 3 is doing shit that your favorite game still isn't.

They shut down nearly all their first party studios, and pretty well killed off PC game development around 2008.

Halo is the only think keeping me tied to the Xbox. I could get a PC to play Mass Effect.

I think the people that are really into motion controllers are something other than gamers. I think people that are looking for motion controllers in games are actually "Simmers" they want a simulation as close to reality as possible, somehow believing that it will make for a more engulfing game experience.

I do not believe this to be the case. In many ways the closer you get to simulating reality in games often times the less fun they are. I think there will always be a place for "Simmers" and indeed many sims actually can have game like elements to them.

But to imply that all games require this level of control, is ludacris. Most games are better served by interpreted controls which boil down the essence of the gameplay mechanics. Anything that puts you in the game and character are by far better controls for a "game" than one which relies on your physical prowess in some manner.

I believe there is a market for both games and sims but I do not believe in the future these will be the same things even though sims may very well inccoporate game like experiences.

Xbox Live wasn't a real innovation. It was like the iPod-a new take on an old concept. The CD format wasn't a success in it's first incarnations either. 3DO, SegaCD, TurboCD, Jaguar CD, CDi...

Ripping off the EyeToy? So is it safe to assume that you think Sony ripped off Nintendo with the PSP? Is it safe to assume you think Sony ripped off Microsoft with the PS3? How about Sony ripping off Microsoft with PSN? Microsoft ripping Apple with the Zune?

Should I go on? Or do you realize the fault in your ridiculous statement?

This is their big innovation? Really?

@Bradwart: XBL improved on the foundation set by earlier consoles (well, the Dreamcast) so drastically that now it is the premier online gaming service. Without XBL, shooters are not as popular as they are now, and the U2's of the world would drive this industry. Games wouldn't be as big as they are now, in short.

And CDs did more to gaming that most things did, regardless of how poorly implemented it was before the Playstation.

I don't see any lost opportunity in LKS. What, was I going to waggle to open my inventory instead of simply pressing +? Was I going to waggle to swing my scepter in battle instead of pressing C?

There's no need for any motion control in Little King's Story, and they rightfully left it out.

Innovation is the act of innovating; introduction of new things or methods.

I totally did not look that up.

Xbox Live is innovative because although the concept of online multiplayer has been a round for a while, XBL handled it in such a way that can be considered innovative. It's become more than just playing some guy online. You have an identity, a reputation.
