Yes, according to Square Enix's Facebook page, the iPhone will soon be the latest platform to carry the first two installations in the long-running Final Fantasy franchise. We found this to be very exciting news -- in fact, we're a little surprised Square Enix would simply abandon the announcement in the middle of the night on Facebook, placing it reticently between pictures of our estranged family members and our daily Farmville updates. Oh, well! No harm done.
No details or a release window were provided in the announcement, but a few screens were delivered. Looks like the timeless "Fight, Magic, Defend, Item, Run" command menu has been replaced with a more efficient, illustrated touch menu. You've come a long, long way in 23 years, old friend.
[Thanks, Isaac!]

I like to go back and play old stuff, but FF and FF2 would be pushing it: they're just too old. This new 'format' seems more inviting. Had I an iPhone, I'd be interested.

With updated graphics and a reworked menu system, the only aspect of these games that would make them feel "old" is your own nostalgia.
...and turn-based battles.
(of which I am a fan)

yeah, theyve been around for a while. All you need is your eyes open and a lack of bigotry, but you managed to express neither of them with only four words.

Is there any chance that VII, VIII, or IX could be released on the iPhone? I'm not sure of the specs.

All the PS1 FF's probably could be, but if you have an 8GB, it would take up a little over a gig of your device, per game... And that's MINIMUM... Wouldn't leave you with room for much else.
The 3rd gen Touches and 3GS's probably could handle FFX, again the file size would be minimum 4GB, heavily compressed.

So the 20th Anniversary editions with weird buttons instead of commands?
How'll the menu look?
The game looks too cluttered now, so I'll pass. Besides, I already bought FF1 for Famicom, NES, MSX, WSC, PS1, GBA and PSP which I thought was the definitive version. FF2 I only have for Famicom, PS1, GBA, and PSP, but wasn't too fond of it to begin with.

This almost makes me regret getting an android phone instead of an iphone. If I didn't own FF1 on nes, ps1, and gba I might be more tempted by this. Great idea for Square though, those games are perfect (read:simple) for a phone as long as the updated interface gets the job done. If they get Ogre Battle or Final Fantasy Tactics on the iPhone, I'll cry.

Having tried a number of "top-tier" App Store games, I've got only one, potentially futile hope for this game: that they *don't* apply the usual console/handheld mentality when it comes to launching. The vast majority of games I've seen launch into a loading screen, then a menu, before you even get to the game, and then when playing, you have to be sure to finish what you're doing (ie, save) before exiting. Considering how often I'm having to read emails or texts or make/receive a call, this seems like an incredibly poor design.
My hope: when you exit the game, it should save exactly where you're to, then on relaunch (which it should do in less than 10 seconds) it should go back exactly where you left off.

I don't care what anyone says: FF1 is the greatest RPG ever made.
I wonder if this'll include the uber-dungeons from Dawn of Souls.
