Nintendo releases budget line in Japan based on Nintendo Channel rankings

Nintendo of Japan just launched a line of budget Wii re-releases -- something that hasn't happened out of Nintendo in a long time. The Minna no Osusume Selection (Everyone's Recommendation Selection) is a series of third-party games marked down to ¥2,800 ($30.53), and given new box art that pretty much obscures the original image, making it really difficult to tell which game it is.

Since the best-selling Wii games are all still selling at full price, Nintendo determined the titles to be released in this collection in a really smart way: with user recommendations from the Nintendo Channel. Each of the games is given a "medal" rank based on the user response, with the most recommended game on the list being Chunsoft's visual novel 428. Other titles in the collection include Muramasa, Arc Rise Fantasia, We Ski & Snowboard, and One Piece and Dragon Ball Z games. See the full list of initial releases after the break.

Although I do hope they eventually re-release games at budget-price here...ugh. Not with that box art. That's even worse than the 360's old "Platinum Hits" art. Still, it's been WAY too long since Nintendo brought out a Player's Choice title, so here's hoping.

Doesn't this go against what Nintendo has been doing for a while. They would rather discontinue a game then lower the price, because why bother lowering the price when you can find it in the bargain bin a few months later.

And that's really fucking ugly box art. Maybe those are reversible sleeves.

Seems like a real possibility, considering the New Play Control! re-releases come with reversible sleeves.

i kinda like the box art. it makes it seem as if i won an award or medal with my video game purchase.

So none of the games are first party? Not that it matters to me, that much, seeing as I'm not the greatest of Nintendo Ninnies, but it is rather interesting all the same.

If memory serves correct, even back in the 64 days, while Sony were pushing forward their Platinum lineup at a rapid rate, I don't remember seeing Nintendo follow suit until the console was on its last, last legs.

I do love me some DBZ. Budokai Tenkaichi 3 was way way too underrated on the Wii, other than the online it's an amazing game.

I'm playing through Dragonball Origins on the DS right now, and so far it's been really great too.

Well, does this make people rate more of their games in hoping for a cheaper re-release for other Wii owners or will current owners of the games just spite the others by not rating at all?

This is a good reminder for me to go out and vote.
Will this also help generate cheaper DS games?
