New Old Mario is stomping all over the mark left by his globetrotting counterpart, with sales of New Super Mario Bros. Wii having already surpassed Super Mario Galaxy in the US. According to the NPD, Galaxy has sold approximately 4.1 million units in the two years since its November 2007 release, while NSMBW has amassed 4.2 million sales in about 45 days.
As IGN notes, the Wii's install base is much higher now (26 million in the US), but that still doesn't explain why Galaxy, which has had far more time on retail shelves, was passed by so quickly. We'd posit that there's something nostalgic about NSMBW, which makes it stand apart from Galaxy and speak to the Wii's demographic. Of course, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will have the benefit of being quite familiar too ...

And what was the point of your comment? You're looking for an insult when none was provided.
"A Nintendo games sells well on own console" is hardly exciting news. Maybe we can have an article about how the Lions lost another game too.
This just in: 360 owners look forward to Halo: Reach!
Also in - PS3 owners excited about God of War 3!

Perhaps both of you are being defensive then because I posted without animosity other than asking why he thought it was worth asking why anyone would consider a 3rd party game as being successful as something I would take interest in.
Why is it wrong calling out 3rd party developers and putting them up to the task of creating a compelling game on the Wii? There are non-shovelware games out there, but I'm talking actually compelling reasons from 3rd party developers.
All 3 consoles have proven the can create 1st party must haves, but 3rd party wise it's missing.
I'm sorry if you feel it's a slander against the Wii owners, I personally think it's a lack of support. So if they make a game able to trump Mario, I'd take notice.
Till then downvote me as I remain unimpressed that Nintedo beat itself.

Call me crazy, but Mario Galaxy is my favorite of the series that I've played since the NES days.
As much fun as Mario 1-3 were, I played them all tons and tons of times already, then Mario World. Been there, done that, the mountains are behind me if I want to return to them.
I like new and innovative ideas. Galaxy took the best bits of the original concepts of Mario/Mario 64 and meshed them with something totally new to make something special out of both worlds - true inspiration, I'd say.

No doubt. The new one is good and all, but Galaxy is arguably the best game on the console so far.

And the moral of the story is that developers who abandoned 2D are idiots and these games *can* sell well at full retail price. Maybe we'll actually see a resurgence of 2D games now. Wouldn't that be awesome?

Moral of the story is
"I demand something new, but really want nothing to change"

Great, now it will be decades before they release another 3D Mario (after Galaxy 2) and Nintendo will start pumping out 2D versions like crazy.

Because it's totally impossible to have two different franchises featuring Mario to appear on the same console, amirite?

Proves that there is a timelessness to that original formula that the 3D games were unable to recreate, i think.
Though i still prefer the 3D ones by a good space

I think it's about time that Nintendo introduces a "greatest hits"/"players choice" line on the Wii. The fact that Super Mario Galaxy is still essentially sold at day one pricing is a bit stupid.
When will companies learn that if a game hasn't been sold in the first year, it's probably not going to be sold!
I think that games should be reduced by at least 10 bucks every year until they're literally $10 games. That way, each year, the games would reach a new audience (i.e. cheaper gamers).
This would probably increase the shelf life of titles - which is great.

Nintendo needs one for the DS as well. They're still selling DS launch titles at full price.

Being in Japan doesn't help me. Nintendo releases things in Japan all the time and just leaves them there.

Further proof that casual, phoned in half assed cashins are all Nintendo needs to stay afloat.
I hope you asshats are happy.

More proof that putting the word Wii in a game title ensures sales.

Oh, and people on Joystiq predicted that NSMBWii will be a slow burner, as the DS version was, and many other top Nintendo games, so it'll still be selling thousands when MW2 will be selling little. It's nothing against MW2, but just the trend looking at how COD4 and Nintendo games normally sell.

I've not played enough NSMBWii just yet (only starting world 3) to make judgement, but I'd say basing this off NSMBWii's early levels and Galaxy's early levels, Galaxy had a bigger impact.
That is like comparing the quality of a ferrari to an aston martin though - both amazing regardless if which is better.
