If you haven't been paying attention to the end-of-year NPD reports, it may surprise you to learn that Gearbox's multiplayer shooter slash RPG, Borderlands, performed quite well in the gruesome 2009 gaming sales arena. How did it manage this feat? Well, we'd attribute it to the game's massive stockpile of collectible weaponry, which we found to be black tar heroin-esque in its addictiveness. However, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford chalks it up to choosing hardcore gamers as the title's target audience.
"Perhaps Borderlands can be a lesson for all of us -- that when making a videogame, we should not be afraid to identify gamers as the audience," Pitchford said in a recent interview with IGN. "I wonder if too frequently publishers and developers are so caught up with going after new, untapped audiences that they can forget to care for the largest, most loyal and reliable audience there is -- the current gamer," he added. Well, there go our hopes for a Facebook-based Borderlands gem-swapping casual puzzler.

I attribute their success to IGN's faux-Randy Pitchford video.
Fuck, that was funny.

I'm with ya, Faceman. But we are definitely in the minority on this one. For me, it's that I don't get into loot games for loot's sake. It's nice to have a system like that in a game, but I typically get the most out of a game's story. It doesn't always have to be the narrative gold (Hello, MW2), but it's nice to at least have SOME kind of story drawing me forward. Borderlands just didn't deliver that to me.
Oh, plus there's a whopping four fucking enemy types, each of which soak up bullets like 50 Cent. Let's not forget that. Blech.

I never had that problem. Upgrade your gun, aim, and learn how to crit.

I didn't like it either. It's one of those games where it feels like I am missing something because I rarely hear people talk bad about it. The strange thing is that I like RPGs and I like shooters. For me, the entire game was predictable, extremely repetitive, and very easy.

Well when you target gamers and not soccer moms and little kids you tend to get higher sales. Soccer moms don't really get gaming and so don't spend much on it (if at all) and little kids don't really have the money to spend on games.

So Bible Viewer X is a game too? What about the PSN interactive comics that specifically say that they're not games: are those games too? Is the Xbox's music player a game?
Wii Fit is not a game, it's an exercise program. I don't see how that in any way is insulting to Wii Fit, because that's just what it is. These consoles are capable of more than games.

Somebody at Gearbox had the foresight to recognize one of Fallout 3's major shortcomings and exploit that, to great effect.
Now, I can only hope that the people at iD can help Bethesda to do the same or better, and the Fallout franchise will be almost perfect.
The only thing I don't like about Borderlands is that without the aid of a wiki, trying to compare what weapon is better sometimes isn't an easy task, esp. at 3 a.m. in the morning when debated with a friend. Even the wiki doesn't answer everything either.

Fallout 3 can't really be played as a first person shooter. You can, but it's certainly not going to beat COD in the mechanics department in its current state. The aiming's way too sluggish.
I know there are those of you out there who agree with me. I was surprised some random customer at gamestop started going off into a tirade about why he didn't like Fallout 3's gunplay (he hated VATS).

^ Yes, but Fallout can be so much more. Right now, Borderlands and Fallout 3 are complements of each other. Borderlands has nearly non-existent story but great FPS action; whereas Fallout 3 has good story but barely serviceable FPS controls.
Why the downvotes? Nobody can express an opinion about what can/should be addressed in the next installment of Fallout?
I enjoyed vats; it was very cinematic. But at the same time, a part of me wanted to be able to roam the Capital Wasteland and engage in real-time gunfights like you see in this E3 2008 Fallout 3 trailer, it was all a bit misleading:

Also. Borderlands aiming and controls are no better than Fallouts. The only FPS that really have it are CoD and Halo, everything else can be clunky at times. (excluding PC of course)

I'm not saying that Borderlands is perfect (after all the enemy AI is a bit dumb, nobody really tries to flank you and your buddy while playing), but it's certainly a step or two up from Fallout 3's shooter offerings. Bethesda can still do better.

I thought that if Fallout 3 had any faults, it was that it was too monochromatic. i.e. the environments had little contrast with anything else in the environment. I know someone who worked on Fallout 2, and he told me that as soon as he stopped playing Fallout 3 soon after leaving the Vault for this reason.

"what was wrong with fallout 3"
Shitty combat mechanics, god-awful animations, bad voice acting. Any glimpse of impressiveness brought by the gorgeously rendered world was ruined by animations that looked like they were done by a second grader. VATS was clearly there just to cover the horrible shooting mechanics. As if the combat alone wasn't bad enough, the enemy AI isn't any good either. I really wanted to like fallout 3, but it ended up being the most disappointing game I've played.

VERY OFF TOPIC
Sorry but my xbox just got 2 lights flashing on it (not 3 light RROD), is this as urgent as the regular RROD? I think this is my last year of warranty so should I send it in right away, or can I just let it cool down and just re adjust it to a better position. I really don't want to send it in with ME2 around the corner :,(

Doesn't the 2 red lights mean something's not plugged in right or all the way? It's either that or it means the system's overheating, I don't remember. It's been a good 2 years since I've had to deal with any flashing lights on my 360.

2 lights is overheating. 4 lights means the AV is unplugged, Tmac.
Check BOTH the power brick and the console, one is overheating.

I checked MS Support, 2 Lights is just overheating. All it said to do was to readjust your xbox and leave it off for a couple hours. I just want to know if this is as important as the 3 light RROD, as whether I should send it in or not. My heart just stopped after it sprang up.
@ Tmac, what did you do after you got your lights? Did you send it in or just readjust its position/ventilate it?

I don't think I've ever got the 2 lights before. All I ever got was 3 and I just sent it in to MS for a free repair.

Thanks guys,
Maybe I'll just give my 360 a break for a while. I'm just gonna hope that my baby will hold up and this won't happen again :P Though, I'm more disappointed, if anything, that a problem like this would sprang up after about 3 years of good usage :(

make sure it's not crowded and has lots of space. It's a little riskier in terms of disc scratching, but standing the 360 up gives the vents more exposure. Don't use one of the third party intercoolers either, they usually fuck it up worse. If you try everything else, try the pelican fanstand, it doesnt fuck up your power source like the intercoolers and it also stabilizes the 360 when standing up. I'm reading this and it seems like incoherent nonsense but ive been awake for 40 hours so gimme a break

The Intercooler TS uses an external power supply, and doesn't damage the console. But I'd only look into it if you keep having overheating issues. But do try to blow the dust out first.

My old one used to overheat every few minutes after playing. I eventually just opened the case up and took a peek inside. It had a fur coat over everything. I'm pretty sure that's whats happening to yours. It sorta just overheats more often over time. After cleaning it out it lasted for another like 6 months.

This man speaks the truth! We're the ones who buy lots of good games each and every year. You make a good game for us and you will (usually) be rewarded with good sales. It's common sense that I wish someone would knock into a lot of these other developer's heads.
