Speaking to CVG, Darwinia+ developer Introversion spoke to the differences between Xbox Live Arcade and PSN, as well as the realities of game development. Regarding why Darwinia+ is an XBLA exclusive, Introversion's Mark Morris noted that independent developers "have to go with whatever [they're] offered," though he'd like to see the game on both platforms. According to Morris, XBLA is preferable because Microsoft greenlight's games from the beginning. "As long as you deliver what you said you'd deliver you're going to launch," said Morris, whereas Sony approves a potential PSN project later in the process, meaning a developer's hard work could eventually be rejected.
Concerning Introversion's current status, Morris noted that the company's future is riding entirely on Darwinia+. He said the game has a "minimum sales figure" that "has to be achieved." If not, said Morris, "Then we don't have enough money to continue going - simple as that." That said, he added that Darwinia+ doesn't have to be a "a massive runaway success," elaborating that performance would have to be roughly equivalent to Jeff Minter's Space Giraffe (an achievable goal if we've ever heard one).
Assuming Introversion stays afloat, its next project will be called Subversion, which utilizes automatic city generation. The developer has previously hinted that Subversion may release on both PC and XBLA.

Spoken like someone who's never played it. I suppose if you're a graphics whore this game won't suit you at all (although it's stylized and the style i personally think is pretty and works well with the context of the game), but if you like games with good strategy, simple to pick up and play but deep and addictive, then it's a fantastic game. But hey, to each his own.

I now have a genuine hatred for you that can't be expressed in any of the tongues of man or beast. Introversion is hands-down the most talented developer in the business, what have you ever created that warranted one of the most diehard fanbases in gaming? Fuck, even Miyamoto praised DEFCON.

I bought Darwinia twice for the PC. I'm about to buy Multiwinia for a second and Darwinia for a Third, and finally buy Defcon and Uplink. Yes, their games are amazing.

I supported them by buying both Darwinia and Multiwinia when they first came out for PC. And considering how much hell they went through, I might just get it again for XBL to help them out. This game was supposed to come out for XBL 6 months after its announcement and here we are 2 years later.

I'll buy it if it's a good game. I'm not going to spend my money on something that sucks just to support a developer, that would be foolish of me.
But if they make a good product I'll gladly buy it without hesitation.

Tmac, you can try the game through Steam, both Darwinia and Multiwinia.
I would buy Darwinia+ if it came to PSN though.

You'd think he'd be willing to take the risk with PSN in order to get the Pub Fund.

I was going to wait to see how well it holds up to the PC version, but I'll just buy it right away now. They haven't failed me before, and I really don't think they'll do it again.

I thought Darwinia+ was just an upgraded port. How much farther along in the 'process' can you really be? Seems like you'd just be out application fees or whatever to submit it to Sony without any actual real porting work done.
Even then, I'm not sure porting it would be such a huge task for something like Darwinia+.

So the XBLA games get approved first., before anything is done... that would explain the amount of poor quality games on XBLA.
If they want to put it on PSN, they have to show work first and are in the position to get much better support from Sony if it meets their standards of quality.
So in the end PSN may have less games, but they are of overall higher quality.
I'd rather not have to sift through crap to get to the good stuff.

Well if what they said is true, then there is more to it than just that. See, I know I'd be more willing to make a great product for someone who gives me the green light right away. That way I could make a really great game without worrying whether or not it's going to get declined.
It's nice to know that Sony is doing quality control, but it also seems a little silly to expect people to invest hard earned cash into a project without knowing whether or not they will see a return on that investment.
I think the key point would be to ensure quality control comes first based on the core concepts promised. Don't just give everyone the green light (like MS apparently does), but instead require detailed plans of what is going to be included and how.

Yeah I know. I'd rather not sift through crap like Castle Crashers, C:SotN and Braid to muck up my experience. I mean what is Microsoft thinking? Allowing games like Geometry Wars 1 & 2 and Puzzle Quest into their list of never ending shovelware?
I mean it's not like I can download trials of the games to see if my money's well spent........oh wait never mind.......well it's not like there awesome games worth every penny there............dammit.
To all XBLA haters -1 to you for your douchey fanboi-ism.

They're pretty good developers, so I'd say it's the money.
But how do you know it's Introversion taking the money and not Capy?
Since neither of us are industry insiders, we just don't know.
Also, it's possible that they both had different experiences to make them feel that way. It happens all the time in all industries.

@Cap Morgan (formerly tenor77)
Nice dood, first u pick Castle Crashers (Coming to the PSN soon), then u follow with a game that's available for the PS Family since 1997 (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) its hard to sift thru this old CD cases, and Braid (which costs 7.49 since Thu)
Then u shift to XBLA exclusives such as Geometry Wars 1 & 2 and Puzzle Quest (unfortunately, the latest is available on PS3, and u can get a "spinoff" for the PSP) which they ARENT since u can play em in a PC, which is funny since ppl do not consider the PC as a gaming platform.
PSN Exclusives are Exclusives. Almost everyone of it, at least.
Nobody is bashing XBLA, but if we are going to believe the devs, crap can be streamed into XBLA due to Microsoft's generous (i need an italic font for the word generous) "greenlight from the beggining", which sounds like an excuse for not having balls and saying "We prefer working with the Xbox" or "Microsoft's Checks are juicier". Team 17 at least was honest.
As always sry for my crappy english :D

If anyone read the developer diaries on their site, you’d know Microsoft approached them to *fund* development of Darwinia+, and that they’ve had costly delays because what they produced wasn’t up to scratch and MS told them to work on it more.
I’d feel much happier about their comments if I were ignorant of the developer - but since I have followed them for years and own all their releases - does seem like a bit of pro-Microsoft spin on their part.
They were fairly insistent that Darwinia+ has to be profitable, or they will fold. Just bear that in mind.

I hope game developers are watching this. Sony closely eyes games. They're not gonna do as Microsoft and Nintendo are and allow just anything on the console to clutter it up. Sony is much more selective. That's why you see more quality titles on the PlayStation 3 than any other console. Sony saw that Critter Crunch was what they wanted and willing to back the company as they needed to help it sell. And the developers were appreciative. But, just as Sony is selective, you've gotta remember, that the console has always been geared toward the hardcore gamer. Teenage boys and young adults. Sony will never back down from that image. SEGA never did either. So, Sony is particular about finding games that will suit its audience. So its accurate to say, that Sony is just as particular as its fans. I think that's how you know a game is a quality and good game. If it can past the test of a hardcore PS3 gamer. Microsoft fans will take whatever they're given. PS3 gamers aren't so cheap and slutty to accept just anything. You gotta woo us. I don't care what anyone says.
They can say what they want and try to justify their opinion, but when you really look deep down, you see it, and know it. Gamers that say, ah... I have both consoles. That means nothing to the hardcore PS3 gamer. The gaming doesn't care, in fact, they just flat out ignore it and move on to the next.... whatever. Because it feels there's no ligitimacy. No NFL fan has two favorite teams. If they do, they're not a fan, they're simply an observer. A neutral.
