Dr. Phil recently broke off a piece of uncomfortable truth for one of his show's guests in a sassy manner. This isn't exactly newsworthy – the mustachioed television personality is no stranger to telling things how they are – however, the subject of the intervention is definitely worth further examination: A mother who began to neglect her family in favor of her virtual plantation in FarmVille. We'll give you guys a second to let that sweet sorrow sink in.
On a recent episode of Dr. Phil, a woman named Teresa was confronted by her daughter about her addiction to the casual crop-growing sim. Apparently, Teresa would regularly unplug the house's router to oust her fellow family members from the computer. This kind of thing doesn't fly in Phil's book, who remarked, "you unplugged it because you have a ridiculous addiction to a ridiculous computer game that's interfering with your ability to be a mother." Check out this off-screen preview of the episode containing the depressing exchange.
*For the record, we joined FarmVille just so we could make the image above. We're definitely still not playing it, and we definitely don't need neighbors to come help out because, hey, those crops aren't going to fertilize themselves.

I think my dog ran away. Or he died. Whatever happened, I drank the pain away.

That's not the 64 version, then. The dog is nearly useless, apart from the yearly race.

Don't mind reading a wall of text if its interesting, and that was, so its okay. My mum has never gotten addicted to anything, but I suspect that if I installed Sims for her, she would get addicted to it.

That... Really sucks. I wish I could recommend treatment of some sort. I suppose you had a decent relationship before GC and Wii came along for a ride so why not just sell the consoles? In my opinion that seems far better for you and her (though I consider it a possibility she'll get a console of her own) .

I played Farmville for a total of two weeks.
Then I decided that college was more worth my time. And games with more depth and actual gameplay.

I didn't have to play it to know that there are better games more worth my time.

I hate farmville...but I play a whole lot of it because I have a lot of friends who play it. They send me a lot of nonsense. They're pretty much nearly all females, except for the one odd guy friend besides myself. Its way shittier than harvest moon ever was, but it has the 'come-back' appeal of animal crossing because every couple of days they add new crap to check out! At least 95% of that crap is 'pay-to-play' and then you get one EXCITING thing that you can actually use your farmville coins for, like a yellow bench or some other useless shit.
I hate that game with a passion...but even as I write this I'm about to go on facebook and check my stupid crops and make another 30,000 in usual farmville coins.

I HAD a similar addiction to cafe world. My cousin showed it to me and I played it for a day and hated it. Once I gave up, my cousin(being part of a competitive family) took it as a personal victory that I gave up. like I said being part of a competitive family i couldn't let her have the satisfaction of letting her know she won so I continued to play until I passed her level. It got ugly, I had become some sort of cafe world junkie. i kicked the habit and proud to say i been off it for 5 months lol

Farmville, pfft. I still maintain that when Civilization Facebook comes out, it's going to be the end of the world as we know it.

What's ironic about this story is that so many of this site's male readers, including the editors, probably have equally sad lives due to their addictions to FPSs like COD.

I can't stand people like Dr. Phil because they "diagnose" people for various conditions that they are not qualified to make. "Dr." Phil stopped renewing his license to practice psychology in 2006. He is no longer qualified to diagnose or treat psychological disorders. As far as I'm concerned, his television show is a vulgar display of the practice of medicine without a license.
Also, "video game addiction" isn't even a valid DSM-IV diagnosis. The American Psychological Association also decided in 2007 that when the DSM is updated to version 5, it still will not contain video game addiction because the research simply isn't there to support it.
I suspect that when the research is done, it will conclude that video games are like any other recreational activity--you can spend too much time enjoying it (just like some people exercise too much, or spend too much time gardening, or spend too much time in their woodshop), but the activity itself is benign.

How is it even possible to play Farmville so much to neglect the kids? I mean, once your crops are plants, it's not like you have to sit and watch them grow for 8 hours.

Maybe he can bring Bradwart on and they can discuss how fuckin much that kid posts.
