Much like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves demonstrated in 2009, Halo: Reach will be expected to deliver an experience that not only speaks highly of its developer, but also of the technological capabilities and commercial identity of its home platform. Whereas Halo 3: ODST was built upon Bungie's 2007 space hoop outing (has it already been that long?), the developer tells Edge that its next shooter is already "bending the Xbox as far as it'll bend." Surely that voids the warranty?
"We are... taking every advantage of everything on the CPU and GPU, and every bit of memory in order to produce the look of Reach beyond anything of Halo 3, " creative director Marcus Lehto noted, attributing the evolution -- which also benefits the size of environments and complexity of the AI -- to increased understanding of the hardware. "We're pushing it as far as we can go," Lehto said. "With every iteration we understand what more we can exploit with the hardware."
Chalk up another win for longer console life cycles -- and for long-running franchises.

It's great Halo will look better, but it's not exactly the reference standard for next-gen graphics, so it may well just end up playing catch-up.

This may look better which I think it does to Halo 3, but Gears of War 2 still looks much better from what has been shown so far.

You have to keep in mind that Halo's engine also scales to allow for 4 player co-op... it's also "recording" everything that's going on in campaign (entire campaign levels at a time) for playblack with camera angle manipulation while keep track of everyone's scoring.
There's a balance between resources to use for graphics and gameplay and I, personally, like the balance that Bungie goes for... they allow enough system "resources" for good graphics but then also put emphasis on great gameplay elements that make the game much more fun and replayable.

@Wiizer
I may be mistaken, but Uncharted 2 does NOT allow you to record during campaign... and I'm pretty sure there's no 4-player co-op.

Wiizer, Uncharted 2 doesn't have 4 player online coop. It doesn't even have two player local coop.

Could any game in 2007 match the lighting of Halo 3? Think of the Brute holding up the marine on the first level. That was the first time a game really gave me daylight. Compare that to the muted, sound-stage like lighting in the Orange Box. It's not all about textures and pushing pixels.

Marathon 2 did that on a 25MHz 68030. I don't think it takes up much of the CPU to do it.

er, I mean it did the recording part. Back when I used to play it on a Mac in the 90s.

Ummmm, excuse me, Uncharted 2 has 3 player co-op... big whoop, 1 more player, and i'm sorry but LAN is not included in pretty much any game anymore, including PC games... nobody uses it because it's unnecessary because everyone can get online w/ no lag... Uncharted 2 also has a much better video editor than Halo 3 in the multi-player mode, change all the camera perspectives, view from each player's perspective of the 10 players, complete control in the editor of lighting, fog, and many other things, easily upload the files and share them over the network because every PS3 has a hard drive... not to mention an entire Machinima Mode that allows you to chroma-key (green-screen) the entire level so you can put the character wherever you want. And all of this with a SINGLE load time, and GOTY honors, Halo 3 was a very weak effort, tweak Halo 2 graphics in HD and add more shine to the armor and a few more multiplayer modes, then milk the franchise more with ODST and pay a premium for the same stuff... the only place they can go from here is up... but give me a decent story for once, cause the formula is getting OLD...

Wow Jordan. I guess all it takes is a Halo article to see the PS3 trolls at their best. Can we just talk about the game in the article without turning everything into a console flamewar? It was old four years ago, it's still old now.

And yet games manage to do it. So I think it's fair to mention that some games can and some games can't. It does relate to the abilities of the programmers of the games. Some can work around hardware limitations better than others.
Brad, you sure seem to cover all the bases in terms of defending Bungie. Do you firmly believe that for everything Bungie seems to not do as well as other companies/games that there is an explanation that absolves them of all responsibility for the differences?

Great link Bradwart..
I remember back in the day.. N64, used a lot of a misting technique to smooth things out.. where by that link, PS3 blurs it's edges.. makes me wonder on 360, What dev's are using the 3 VMX-128's for, as they were to handle the 4xAA for them..
I've said it since the start of this gen, this feels like a trial run, when I first learned 360 had only 512MB ram (and using DVD9 over HD-DVD) I thought it wasn't enough.. then PS3 was stated to have 256MB, 4.2ghz Cell & 8 SPU's, later changed 2x256MB, 3.2ghz Cell and 6 SPU's (plus 1 in redundancy), before the console was finalised.. I felt that both consoles needed at least a gig of RAM to last the 5 years.. but now they want 10 years out of them..
..now look what you made me do.. I geeked..

sorry but because of the record option, which by the way lets you watch from ANY angle, i am totally ok with the quality it ended up being. because this allowed people to make videos (i know it was possible before) much easier. also lets me relive moments where i kicked ass, and also got mine kicked. SO thank you for you that wonderful comment ill keep watching that guy put a rocket up your ass on loop.

god the next generation gives me such a boner, unggghhh halo 3 is the megan fox of video games omgroflcoptr!
.. but in all seriousness, any game on earth can be recorded with a 10 dollar wire that you simply plug into your console to your video card, and then you can just record with your computer. how do you think machinima and console game video reviews, etc. were done for 20 years prior to the release of halo 3? fuck, i used to do it on my coleco adam and 486 with windows 95!

Well, you'd HOPE that it utilizes every bit of the system... I'm sure they'd have to try hard NOT to.
I think its all about new effects and shortcuts within that system that is developed to make a game look better. Seriously, take a look at Halo and then Halo 2. I can only hope that Reach does the same. Halo 3 was kind of a let down compared to 2 in my opinion... but it was the first Halo game on a new system. I think through all the trials and developments Bungie has been doing in the console's life (constant Multiplayer support and ODST) should allow Reach to be looking superb.

I hate this maxed out console bullshit we hear with every game. I doubt in 3 years Reach will still be the best looking game on the 360. It's not a selling point for you game even. MW2 runs at 1024 x 600, and it's not even that great looking graphically, but people buy it anyways. Reach being a great game is far more important than it using every ounce of the 360's hardware.

It's not an ugly game or anything, it just isn't anywhere close to the most graphically impressive. Especially at that resolution.

they didn't say that's the best a 360 game can look. they said that they're pushing the 360 hardware as hard as they can, given their current knowledge. with even more efficient coding, games would look even better (given that the system was once again maxed out).

they way i read your comment it seemed like you thought that Bungie was saying that they maxed the 360's capabilites (instead of just using processor etc. at 100%). guess i read it wrong.

I thought MW2 looked like shit. The reason the graphics are so crap is because they want to keep the frame rate at a constant 60 FPS. I don't know that any game will exceed Killzone 2 in terms of sheer graphical prowess this generation.
