For you, maybe. For people with glasses it's just a pain in the butt to do right. Seriously, why couldn't the facepalm be replaced with a dramatic sigh or an ear-splitting scream of agony. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that it isn't a suitable method of expressing one's disbelief, but having to mangle your glasses every time you do one gets annoying. Speaking of which, does anyone actually facepalm themselves or do they just post asci art and call it good?

Face palming with glasses:
Slowly and purposefully take off your glasses like you're about to tell them that they have cancer. Proceed to, almost despairingly, place your head in your hand like Picard shown above. Hold for no less than 5 seconds and no more than 15 seconds.

This will be on the test.

If you want to leave your glasses on, then you can also use the forehead focused facepalm, where you put the base of your palm just above the ridge of your eyebrows with your fingers pointing up so they span towards the top of your head. This usually requires you to bow your head down more than with the standard facepalm.

It implies an entirely different emotional reaction though. Rather than just being utter despair over the failure of the person prompting the facepalm, it implies more of a "that is so stupid that it is causing physical pain directly to my brain for even contemplating the level of stupidity, and putting pressure on head is the only thing that eases the sickening throb of my head splitting open as my brain attempts to escape by killing itself rather than be infected further by your continued existence."

This is why I sometimes hate the mainstream media. Are they just now freaking realizing that "Omigosh! GAMES ARE FOR ADULTS TO????!!!!!" They obviously don't understand two things: Video games have a very mature level of substance and depth these days, and two, they fail to realize what the rating "M" means. Morons.

the day video games are treated as a form of art by the mainstream media, I will rejoice.

really, I can write a full length op-ed on how video games are (or can be because they aren't necessarily there yet) an art form, they have much more outreach and accessibility than movies, they can tell a story, captivate you, suck you in and make you care about your actions and characters (kind of like how mass effect 2 allegedly is, saying that cause I haven't played it obviously) but the mainstream media needs to learn.

There was a kid online the other day that claimed he was five, and we was genuinely telling the truth. What game was he playing? Team Fortress 2. What the heck is going on here. Oh, and of course we have to deal with all of those idiotic teenagers who don't know the first thing about gaming. I await the day I meet Robin Williams in an online match of MW2.

Games have been made for adults pretty much since the first playstation, which was what, 1996? Where the hell have these guys been all these years?

I mean, sometimes I wish I blacked out for the entire last decade too, but these guys act like they actually pulled it off.

Since the Playstation? Long before that, kid. Remember that Doom was the game that pretty much invented classifications of games, alongside stuff like Mortal Kombat. Not to mention the "under-the-counter" games for the likes of the Atari that were obviously aimed at the "mature" audiences (I say mature, most of them were comical in nature). Stuff like Custer's Revenge and other adult titles.

I forgot about Doom, but that's because it was a pc game and I never cared for pc shit, specially in the early 90s.

Mortal Kombat is not an adult game though. You're confusing gore with mature, and I never saw anyone but little kids playing that in arcades. I'm talking games along the lines of the first metal gear solid, with a lot of serious tones and political storylines.

Well it says Doom was on the SNES, so aside from Mortal Kombat that's one other game. Then again Nintendo was known for keeping the games on their system pretty tame at the time. You can also see some of the mature/adult games rated for the Sega CD/32x and the Genesis.

You should keep in mind that games didn't start getting the "Mature" rating until after the SNES had released.

They've been mature for as long as they've been games. It's just that with new technology comes new way of adding mature things into games, like full motion video, 3D rendering, etc.

I played it back starting in 94-95, along with many other PC classics like Commander Keen, Heretic, Hexen, Jazz Jackrabbit, etc. I played many of ID and Epic's older games. I grew up with the PC in my early childhood and then later went to the Playstation and Playstation 2 in my late childhood to young adult years. Before 94', I had an Atari and NES which I hardly remember. I guess that is why I still have this attachment to PC gaming.

Really Tmac? I mean I know tons of people who started gaming on Windows 95. and were even enjoying "mature" games way back when.

I don't think it's that they are particularly more adult oriented now as much as it is that since gaming is much more popular now, more studios are popping up all over the place that are offering mature games.

Let's not forget all the Doom or Duke Nukem games and their clones.

"Who even had a PC that long ago?"

I remember that my family's first PC had a BIOS copyright 1989 American Megatrends. It was on this machine that I played 1993's X-Wing, which utilized EMM386 memory management (note that it didn't run under that newfangled Windows GUI, though maybe some later release of the game did). I'm not even going to mention the older DOS games I had that ran too quickly on our 20-MHz 386.

Really, tmac, you should realize that some of us here are older than you.

Since the dawn of gamer civilization there have been games for adults and games for kids. The fact it takes non-gamers this long to realize this is not only a testament to gamers far greater evolution but how un-evolved non-gamers are.
