Most prominent figures in the video game industry usually recoil when they're given all the credit for coming up with the idea for one of their studio's games. The same apparently can't be said for Hideo Kojima -- according to CVG, the mind behind Metal Gear Solid recently explained the origins of some of the concepts in Peace Walker during an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine: "Well it's strange, but not so many ideas come from the other staff," Kojima humbly stated.
The idiosyncratic developer also pointed out, "Co-op Ring, Love Box - the names and the ideas come from myself," later adding "I am taking charge of the overall game design." We're pretty excited by this fact. It sounds like more than any other Metal Gear game that came before it, Peace Walker will be a direct window into Kojima's convoluted thinkmeat.

It's a hack n slash game but the core metal gear team isn't even doing the project. Basically, the game will be like the cut scene with vamp vs raiden.

Im so glad this isn't on blu ray. Maybe he will have more actual game and not insanely long cutscenes. I remember when MGS used to be about gameplay.

Yeah, man, I wish it was on a 8MB cartridge. Screw those cutscenes all together. And CD-quality audio? Pssh. Who needs that?

Really? I mean hell, all the games had cutscenes. I remember MGS3 had a lot of cutscenes too. When you first make it to that isolated house where you meet... the chick, whatever her name was. I believe that was at least 2-3 cutscenes right there. Plus all the other ones in game.
The series has always had plenty of fun cutscenes, it just so happens that they were longer in MGS4. But hell, you could still skip them all if you didn't want to see them. For the most part if you skip the ones in-between missions you could still mostly follow along with the story from what I remember.
Also, Brad's right. It's not the technology that is to blame if you don't like what they added, it's the developer. Blu-ray isn't the bad guy here. They could just as easily have made the game on a Blu-ray disc without all the cutscenes.

The main reason the game filled a 50GB Blu-ray disc was actually the uncompressed audio, not the length of the cutscenes.

I am talking about MGS1. It practically invented the stealth genre. I don't remember it having such long cutscenes. In MGS4, stealth was completely unnecessary, except in act 3, but all you were doing was following someone and it was the most boring level. Ya MGS3 and 4 both had long cutscenes, and I just thought it was unnecessary. People think the story and cutscenes were awesome, all I have to do is point to the part where Raiden is destroying mecha with a samurai sword and breakdance moves. If all the cutscenes were released as a movie, it would be a cheezy B-Movie. And the length of cutscenes is used as an excuse for short and linear gameplay.

You need to play MGS1 again then. Metal Gear Solid is all about long cut scenes.
You might want to also rethink what linear game play is. Metal Gear Solid IV was not a linear game. Also, MGSIV was made to be played either guns blazing or by means of stealth.

I love the MGS series but MGS3 started with the even longer cutscenes trend which MGS4 took and went nuts with.
It's like long cutscenes for the sake of being long cutscenes sometimes honestly.
At least MGS1's cutscenes actually WERE interesting and awesome.

Because it wasn't that great. It had barely passable gameplay, and that's only because Kojima hired a westerner to teach him how to make a modern game (and even then it was sub par).
The game also went downhill fast after the 2nd act. I mean just about the entire 3rd act was a waste of time. The couple 40 minute+ long cutscenes in the game didn't help things either.
I'm glad the main series is over now. It tied up all the loose ends, and it could not have ended at a better time before all the archaic elements in the series could come back and bite it in the ass.

Honestly I don't know. I keep not being able to post on accounts, and they don't edit any of my posts like they normally do with people who get banned.
So I shrug off the minor inconvienance and make another one in about 2 minutes. I don't really care though, the only people who care about bans/post counts are the ones too scared to say whta they want.

The problem with MGS and especially MGS4 is the perception that it is an action game, and that it can only be good if it appeals to Western developed action game standards.
The western influence was MGS4s biggest problem, not its saving grace. MGS is an adventure game through and through, and like all adventure games (and really, all Kojima games before Boktai) it is 75% story and 20% item collecting and 5% actually using what you collect.
I don't understand the complaints that it's all cutscenes (other than that the story is... batshit incomprehensible)... That's why Kojima's famous, that's why everyone LOVES Snatcher and Policenauts.

Also, I played ME2. It's way better than you expect.

The main reason I played the MGS games was because of the story, since the gameplay was always kinda meh. I didn't have a huge problem with the cutscenes, I'm just not used to sitting through movies that long in games.

I don't know man, a lot of people love to make the biggest deal out of any exclusive that isn't on their system of choice. How many times have we seen the "It would take like 20 DVDs to put it on Xbox 360" argument?
It's not too much of a stretch to imagine it also goes the reverse way. Stuff like "Pfft, it's all cutscenes, go ahead and keep your shitty exclusive movie".
It's annoying, but what can you do? Fanpeople will always be fanpeople.

And Granger is right. Kojima may be slightly loopy, but that's why people love his games.

I can guarantee that PS3 exclusivity was not the issue for me. For over a year, I was really excited about the prospect of MGS4 coming to the XBox 360, based mostly on the glowing reviews for the game.
When I finally got my PS3, it was one of the first games I ordered, and I was psyched to play it.
I still can't get my mind around how incredibly awful that game was. Maybe the ending was awesome, I'll never know.
"I don't understand the complaints that it's all cutscenes (other than that the story is... batshit incomprehensible)"
Well, I think that's pretty much it. Once the game moves into a non-interactive form, there are different expectations for it. If it's going to be hours of cutscenes, then you want the quality of a movie to sit through it. Instead, you got a huge bucket of batshit incomprehensible.

I'll repost this on the FFXIII review (which I'm expecting tmac to troll), but I've been keeping track of something about tmac.
tmac hates all of the below:
MW2, L4D (and everything Valve does), any Zelda is not as good as Darksiders, Uncharted 2, Halo, Metroid Prime Trilogy, and now the MGS Series.
You're not a gamer, you're just a guy that heckles everyone in the audience.
Posted: Jan 24th 2010 7:45PM (Unverified) said
Who said I hate MW2? I stopped playing it because of the people who play it and take advantage of all the glitches, not cause it wasn't fun.
And I don't hate the MGS series. I don't even really hate 4, I just don't like it. I also don't hate Uncharted, I just don't think it's all that special. It's more like I hate the fanboys who drool over anything and everything even remotely related to that game.
The rest of those are pretty spot on though.

Well first of all, you're forgetting that all JRPGs made in the last decade suck (according to tmac).
Secondly, he doesn't hate Uncharted 2, he just doesn't think it was as big as everyone hyped it up to be. He actually says the graphics are really good too.

Of course he got banned again and he'll be banned again before another month goes by. He's turned into nothing more than a blatant troll ... not even Sprinkles got banned as much in a short period of time.
MGS 4 is one of the best and highest rated games this generation. It's not for everyone but no game is for everyone. Look, people hate GTA IV, MW2, AC2, UC2, Halo 3 and every other critically acclaimed game thats released and that will release. It's just the way it works. No matter how good a game and how many people love it there will be people, for whatever reason, that hate it and thought it was awful. Many people will love Mass Effect 2 ... and a large contingent of people will think it's terrible. It's just how things go with personal taste and opinion.
I've played the MGS series since its inception on Playstation and completed every game multiple times. As a franchise it's my personal favorite of all time.
@BigFat
"if you cared about the franchise that much, you would have already had a PS3."
"Nobody bought a xbox360 expecting it to be able to play MGS4."
Then, simply put, your wrong. Go back and re-read the rumor threads all over the internet about MGS4 coming to the 360. Plenty of PS2 gamers migrated to the 360 and plenty of people who never played the series at all wanted to play it. If you are painting everything that black and white then you are intellectually limp.

A 5 is way too harsh. It's not garbage like Brutal Legend was, it just wasn't that special. 7.5 is a perfect score for MGS 4.
