Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced that sales of the PlayStation 3 have eclipsed three million units in the United Kingdom. Speaking to MCV, an SCEE spokesperson noted that the company is "delighted" by the news. Pointing to a strong lineup of software, including God of War III and Heavy Rain -- both rumored to be receiving PS3 bundles in Europe -- as well as the upcoming PS3 motion controller, the rep added that the three million milestone is "a great way to start the year."
So, once again, the price cut seems like it was probably a pretty good idea. Assuming Sony can keep up the momentum and deliver on a few promises, 2010 just might be a banner year for the PlayStation 3.

Really, is anyone surprised? A price cut almost always equals increased sales.

I'm glad to see Sony doing much better. I was so worried for them at first. It sucks that this year's competition is going to come down to this stupid motion capture crap...

Seems like they've sold pretty much the same since their respective launches then.
The PS3 launched on on 23/03/07 (or, if you're American 03/23/07...silly Americans and their date system), giving it 2yrs. 10 months - just over 1mil/yr
The PS3 launched on on 02/12/05 (12/02/05), giving it 4yrs. ~1.5months - just over 1mil/yr
To be more precise, PS3: ~1.0588mil/yr, 360: ~1.0666...mil/yr
So, assuming Ordeith's number is correct, the rate of sale for both is about the same over their lifespans, with the 360 having a VERY slight edge.
Of course I don't know if Ordeith is accurate, as Wikipedias figure for the UK is 3.7mil (as of June 09) but if you can provide a viable source that could be changed...

MAG? the game that's received next to no advertising and, judging from the opinions emerging from the beta, seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it game?
the PS3 has GOW3 and GT5, those will both be huge in moving consoles. but i really don't think MAG is going to do much to sell PS3s.

Last Guardian is supposed to be releasing in the second half of the year. It looks like GT 5 will be late Summer or early fall when released. DC Universe Online, Agent & Final Fantasy 14 could all come out in the holiday season though no release date has been given for any of the three. Also, wasn't Modnation pushed into the fall?

No release date for Fable 3 (hasn't been formally announced for release this year either), last I knew Alan Wake was out in the Spring and I don't think Reach has been dated either.

Fable III isn't confirmed, Alan Wake...I think it will end up being the next Too Human. Reach will almost definitely be a September release. Most likely 9/21/10.

Wikipedia and OXM UK aren't exactly bastions of accuracy...
Plus, if Molyneux and company are busy coordinating the Natal launch lineup, Fable III is bound to slip.

If I didn't have my inner PC fanboy controlling my brain, I would probably purchase a PS3 again, despite my negative experience last time. It has enough exclusives that I enjoy to warrant a purchase (MGS4, Disgaea 3, Last Guardian, God of War 3, LittleBigPlanet, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1/2, are on the top of my head).
I was impressed by the Uncharted 2 kiosk demo at BestBuy, pretty fun!

If you do buy a PS3 then pick up a new one and buy an extended warranty through Sony or a 3rd party.
Reply

Easiest one would be SquareTrade, especially since they're pretty big and not likely to fail before the warranty expires.

He's confused because he's comparing PS3 UK sales to 360 sales in all of Europe. The only territory the 360 leads the PS3 is actually North America.

Well I wouldn't mind if you made a mistake, but considering your recent posting history...
Perhaps you should lay off the comments in PS3 sections for awhile. You know, clear your head some and all that.

Don't get me wrong, 3 million in the UK in three years is impressive but what's even more impressive is that the Wii did that in the US in one month.

I can't believe that people are buying their 4th or 5th Xbox 360. I can see myself picking up a second one if mine were to die tomorrow (knock on wood) but I'd be hard-pressed to pony up the cash for a third, fourth and fifth.

The MMO I'm currently looking forward to is FFXIV. I've played FFXI for 5 years now and it's time for a change.
