I'm unable to decipher whether this game is worth getting due to the lack of any sort of % rating at the end of the review.

Whats an RPB?
Wow a review that just gives the review's feelings about the game, how useless.

Dude, seriously. Get a grip.

It's launch day, those who didn't pre-order are still on the fence as to whether or not they should pick it up and are looking for editorials on impressions of the game. They don't want 'zoMFG!!11! Vader iz luke's dad!!'.

@ TC , of couse the review is useless. Haven't you learned by now Joystiq doesn't understand what a 'game review' is supposed to be? They just do a 'back of the box' summary.

Oh, and I loved this line "Everything is streamlined, and Mass Effect 2 is so much better for it."

So in other words....dumbed down. Maybe people thought it was better to at least have the illusion of getting different, better gear. People like equipment and loot.

I want to read the review...but I can't bring myself to go any further than the first paragraph. I've done a damn good job at avoiding any possible info "leaks" about the game. I can't wait to be totally surprised by everything.

lol the best action-RPG in history? If Demon's Souls is an action-RPG then there is no possible way this will be the best. I'll still most likely be getting it on PC but not until it drops in price a bit.

I dont understand how someone can spin less gear customization and only being able to talk to teammates on your ship into a positive. I think thats bullshit. I was pissed when I found out you can only equip armor on Sheapard, and now Im pissed to find out you cant talk to teammates outside of your ship. Talking to your teammates on different worlds and getting their opinions or experiences about where you are or what just happened really added an extra layer of realism and gave life to them, now theyre just going to feel like robots following you around. Assuming he meant you cant talk to them AT ALL then wtf is up with that? I can deal with not having in depth "tell me about your life" conversations outside the ship but not being able to say anything is ridiculous and defeats the purpose of choosing characters you like to accompany you.

While its still my top game of the year it sounds like they are dropping a hell of a lot of RPG in favor of action.

I've got my CE waiting at the game store on my way home. I've got to stop and get a hair cut so I'm going to have to wait for hours. It's going to kill me. :-P And to those who don't "get" the review, view it as a critique not a review. Maybe that will help. Personaly I prefer reviews without scores because they take a bit more intelligence in crafting.

They consistently chime in with pertinent stuff as you progress, and there are opportunities to talk to them about specific things in the environment. And they are fairly dynamic in the conversations too, it feels good all told.

Wow, it's been a while since I've seen this many warnings and/or bans in a single comment thread. I'm not sure how I feel about this... Actually I do -- entertained, absolutely entertained.

Getting back on topic, I support Joystiq's review format 100%, and am greatly looking forward to playing the game. First I should probably work on the first, (flaws be damned), but still...

Im afraid its not even in the same league as MGS4, i know you've been waiting for an excuse to pull out the '!', but its not here im afraid. Maybe next time.

This should make a really good rental no doubt though.

Yes, clearly, MGS4 has more exclamation points than Mass Effect 2.
That's all I can say for it as I have not played it.
Perhaps you should save your judgement of ME2 until after you've tried it?

Dragon Age beats both with seven books of dialogue.

On my second (now legit, retail) playthrough now, this is easily one of my most favorite games of all time and I've only had it ~48 hours with it. The story-telling, the action, the environments, the interactions. It all adds up.

And the importing from Mass Effect 1 is incredible with the depth of details that carry over, it's almost tempting to start all over again because of the amount of shit that interacts with the second game.

I have to agree with it.
While I have not put in as much time (Just started got it at midnight)
From what I have played so far it's really great.

It's better than ME1 in just about every way

Thanks

as much as i'd hate to tell anyone to put off getting ME2, i have to admit that playing through ME1 is a good idea. ME2 does an adequate job of explaining the story, but there's still a ton of backstory that just holds more meaning if you saw it firsthand in ME1. plus all the characters and references to the first game are astounding.

it's not so much that there's any penalty for not playing through ME1 beforehand, it's just that the rewards are so great.

I think they did the right thing in streamlining the experience. The only thing I have a problem with is the new dating mechanic. I don't care about banging virtual people, but I wanted the fifty achievement points that would have given me, and playing as female Shepherd, sex never happened. Granted, I never talked to the men (I wasn't about to let my lesbian Shepherd from the first game be defiled by a dude!), but neither (spoilers incoming) Tali, nor the assistant chick, or Miranda Lawson would jump into the sack. Reading a wiki, I learned that Tali and the assistant swing both ways, so it is baffling to me why neither of them let sex be initiated despite all of my repeated advances.

Other than that, I was a bit sad to see the robust customization (through new items and weapons) gone, but not the awful inventory system. It's a fair trade off I suppose, but I wouldn't mind seeing that level of customization come back for the third game.

All things considered, ME2 is looking good for game of the year (unless TLG comes out miraculously), although it is obviously early to be thinking about that.

Uh, why was my comment deleted?

For the record, my comment said: "THREE MORE DAYS." Hardly offensive content, I would think?

Mass Effect is releasing in three more days here in Australia, on the 29th (it was the 26th when I posted it). I was expressing my excitement. I'm not sure why a comment would get deleted for that?

That's one of the things I really hate about Joystiq. Comments are deleted and people are banned but there is NEVER any explanation as to why people are banned or why posts are deleted. I saw your comment before and it was not offensive, it's a ridiculous thing to delete, but if Joystiq wants to curb trolling or something they need to edit posts instead and say this user was banned for this so that people know WHAT not to say. People get away with ridiculous trolling and other bullshit all the time, while other posts are banned and deleted for seemingly no reason. Some consistency would be nice.
