I thought I'd chip in on the whole 'not an rpg' issue since some people on this thread seem to harp on that. I'll preface by alerting a high nerd factor, but whatever. I don't believe an rpg is defined by mechanics and clearly the genre has evolved and that's what has put some people into a tizzy.

On my second playthrough of ME1 I was doing the renegade storyline; the exception being that with Liara in private I would be the kind, sensitive, attentive type. As my playthrough progressed this style of interaction began to have more and more weight on the tone of my character as I perceived him.

I was a ruthless jerk as an end to my means in all the missions, including to my crew and it set quite a heavy tone - I was even harsh with Liara in front of the crew because (nerd factor alert) I didn't want there to be any appearance of favoritism as my relationship with her progressed (strictly in my imagination of course but it made the private exchanges even more poignant).

As missions accumulated and I did some terrible things it was actually really nice to talk with Liara privately on the ship and show her a different side of my character that no one else in the game saw - it was like an oasis of genuine interaction after all the ruthlessness.

My choice to play that way gave my character a very distinct depth to me - that I had to be the way I was to get the job done but there was a part of me that was gentle and kind that I would only reveal to one special character.

If that isn't role playing then I don't know what is.

I didn't like Mass Effect, but MAN are you making this sound tempting.

I got this game on Sunday and it's really good. A lot better from Mass Effect 1, however there are some things I prefer about ME1 over ME2.

My main problem with ME2 is that there's just wayy too much talking for a video game.

There were tons of people talking about Mass Effect 2 on Twitter today! I showed some of the funnier ones in my video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdzoAlPyU8M

Ugh. So much misunderstanding. First and foremost, there is armor customization although it -is- only for Sheperd. You can choose various helmets, chest pieces, arm pieces and leg pieces. You can also change the colors and switch between various patterns. Each piece looks different and they all enhance different stats. So you can customize your armor visually and switch to pieces that suit your playstyle/class build.

You find schematics for new pieces and CRAFT the pieces on board the Normandy. Same thing for weapons, there are multiple weapons of each type and many different types of upgrades for each weapon. Charm & Intimidation options are still in the game, except they show up based on whether or not you are more Paragon or Renegade, which is -streamlining- and not "dumbing down." Hacking/bypassing can be done by all characters of all classes.

I, personally, really like this STREAMLINING because in the first game I really wanted to hack and be stealthy; I was a Vanguard however because the sniping in the first game is uncontrollable and nonsense. I preferred Garrus and Liara over any combination including Tali (though I like her as a character) because to be quite honest hacking was pretty much useless in the first game. It's there if you want to do it, if you enjoy that kind of thing now you don't have to spend inflated talent points purchasing the ability to do so.

Every single talent point you get in this game actually -matters- and when you unlock a new move to use, or increase the level and augment the ability you actually FEEL more powerful for it. Every ability for every character, when it's maxed out, has TWO different possible "Evolutions" which are drastically different. So while you and I could both be playing the same class, with the same characters, chances are we'll still have different playstyles and different skills and drastically diffent solutions to encounters.

AND THERE ARE SIDEQUESTS, holy Heysoos. They're all interesting and thought out. A lot of them are funny, or let you pass by funny dialogue. Your party members talk during your progress in a mission and occasionally there are areas that are significant to them (individually)wherein you can spark up a little conversation. It's light, yes, but it helps keep the feeling of momentum when you're down on a planet or in a space station.

And most importantly, all the dialogue systems and "choice systems" are back and improved in this game.

In short: They didn't "dumb down" the game, they STREAM LINED the game. It's better mechanically, faster and more polished than the first one by an order of magnitude. Yeesh. People.

glad to hear that. i would be disappointed if the review says that it's more of the same. my interest didn't even last 5 hours in the first game. i HATE spending so much time in inventory management/ dialog (mass effect, oblivion), takes the fun out of it.

Hmm, I played Mass Effect 1 today and totally did not dig it at all.

I might try 2, since it is apparently so different... but, is Shepherd still as totally emotionless as in the first? It was a bit annoying wanting to play a character but being forced to be RoboCop all the time.

KotOR is one of my favorite games of all time, but I wasn't enamored with Mass Effect 1. I wasn't planning on picking this one up, but after I read this review, I went straight to my local Gamestop and picked up a copy. It's been two days and I'm ~20 hrs in.

Basically, thanks, Justin. I'm so glad I didn't miss out on this game. It's phenomenal and I feel like this is the game I've been waiting for the last 7 years.

Glad to see that Joker's actually funny in ME2. Because so far, he seems like a pretty big douche cripple in the first one. So you got lame ass legs, get over yourself dude.
