Good job releasing a hack that works with a firmware no one has had on their PS3 for 1 1/2 years.

It's supposed to work with the current one. Here comes the pirating.

When a blank Bluray can set you back like $25-50 (AUD) you may as well just buy the damn game. The price of Blurays and Bluray writers is probably a bigger deterrent to PS3 hacking than anything else.

@Thatguy

There are problems with that statement. A: How many games actually use the BD space? I'd wager most multi-plats don't. All the pirates have to do is get a version with downsampled audio, compressed cutscenes, etc, and make it fit on a DVD. It wouldn't work for all games, especially not MGS4, but still...

They did the same thing to get around the limit of a CD-ROM being 500MB smaller than a GD-ROM.

As someone who's rather poor, I would never put my system and my profile full of stuff I bought at risk to hack it like that. It would mean I would have to buy all that stuff back.

It's kinda ironic how those that would benefit the most from being able to play pirated games on it are the people rich enough to just plain buy them.

Why can't pirates just run the game off of the hard drive?

A 1TB one costs like 80 USD.

I suppose they could try...but off of a 5400RPM HDD? Plus, you're still dealing with some huge files.

Exactly and Sony force updates for the PS3 so hacking it is pointless.

People aren't excited about this hack for being able to play BluRay Backups...

They are excited for being able to:
*copy PS3 games to the HDD,
*Homebrew, which means Emulators (PS1/PS2/Dreamcast, MAME+CHD's)
*Better media support (MKV without having to convert)
*NTFS support possibly
*XBMC... Even though no XBMC Dev even cares about XBMC on the PS3 or 360, so good luck with this one

I'd love to believe in the people that want it for homebrew.

But as the wii and 360 have shown me, they're in it for the free games :x

@Bradwart

The PS3 blu-ray drive is only x2 speed, about as fast as a x8 DVD drive, so you'd have absolutely no problem running a PS3 game off a 5400RPM HDD, which has a much faster data rate. If you were an evil, piratey shit, that is.

I don't see why everybody sees this as a complete negative.

It will also allow you to play all Region DVDs and Games...that's gotta count for something.

Seeing as nearly all PS3 games are region free...and really, it'd be safer to chip a PS2 to play PS2 and PSOne games from the other regions.

You know you can use 7200RPM harddrives in your PS3.. I currently have a 320GB Seagate that spins at 7200 installed in mine right now.

I think I would be most interested in this, not to pirate, but for better media support and copying my discs to the harddrive. Although, technically I'd be happier if Sony could do this on their own, I'd rather not mod my PS3 and risk getting banned from PSN or something.

We don't need the PS3 ruined as the PSP, for which no one wants to develop. We need the console wars to continue so that there is competition, money for the developers and so better games.

When was the last time you looked at blank BD prices? launch? Here is a link to get them for less than $5 a piece, but you need to buy 25. $115 for what you could essentially make into 25 games which at retail would cost you $1500. Enjoy the link buddy.

By the way, I do not condone anyone copying games. I put the link out there in case anyone wanted cheap blank BD's for a LEGIT reason.

yea it's a shame that now people will probably inevitably use this to pirate games. i haven't pirated a game in a couple years now and even when i ran custom firmware on my PSP, i only used it to play FF7, Gran Turismo 2, and Sonic The Hedgehog on the go, which are all games i have copies of anyway.

i feel like new features are an ok reason to hack though. my PS3 was my main media center until i gave up waiting on a true video playlist and more codec support and just got an HTPC when i upgraded my computer to take over my media viewing.

I hate to burst your bubble, but all an MKV is is a DVD rip from a torrent site. No different to "free games" (cept it's a movie OFC).

Of course, it really didn't have any firmware either.

I don't think the Saturn was ever hacked. Though all you needed was a Gameshark to make it play imports, so...

Oh come on, Pirate, you more than anyone know this aint fake. This is a true exploit he just released and you know that.

Now, that this is not worthy of being called "PS3 is h4cked !!1!!11!!" and that maybe Geohot is loving the attention, I would agree.

I agree this wont take us near ps3 actually being fully hacked.

Every single time I go to play a game on my PS3 it says it needs to be updated, so even if they released updates more frequently, I don't think I'd know the difference.

Seriously the other day I had to update my PS3 for 20 minutes just to buy Zen Pinball, which took another 30 minutes to download fully, and then after I installed it, it took another 15 minutes to download a Zen Pinball patch. I mean Jesus Christ. Why couldn't the Zen Pinball patch have been bundled with the game? And why when an Xbox 360 game says it needs a patch does it only take like 90 seconds?

You must never play your PS3 then. The last mandatory update came out a few weeks ago and the one before that came out months ago.

I feel the same way. Not too long ago I wanted to play some Pain with a friend and it took over an hour to download and install 3 different patches. Why couldn't it just be one big patch?
