Hands-on: Apple iPad
110
Hey, so you know all about the iPhone, right? In the brief time we spent with Apple's new iPad, from a gaming perspective, there's not much more to add. It's a big iPod Touch -- both are missing the iPhone's camera -- but iPad's got a flexible data plan option; no contract required. While Apple showed off some iPad-optimized games during today's keynote, neither Gameloft's new version of N.O.V.A. nor Electronic Arts' new version of Need for Speed: Shift were available for demo. Instead, we took some plain ol' apps for a spin, including Scrabble and Need for Speed: Shift (the current iPhone version; not the upcoming iPad one).
The "2X" button indeed fills the screen with a simple tap, turning your low-res iPhone apps into full-screen experiences; however, the increase comes with a graphical cost. The games are scaled up and look like it. That doesn't mean they're not entirely playable -- Need for Speed actually controlled better with the larger screen; tilting the iPad had less of an effect on the screen than doing the same on the iPhone's comparatively tiny display, meaning we were able to focus on the action while moving the screen around (something many iPhone games simply don't do as well). Similarly, the larger surface means your big fat thumbs won't obscure as much of the screen as they do on the iPhone -- that means more room for on-screen pads, as shown in the iPad-optimized port of N.O.V.A.
The Apple representative guarding the preview device told us that the iPad-optimized games will be featured in their own part of the App Store. These aren't "combo" apps that work one way on iPhone or iPod Touch and another way on iPad -- they are separate apps. While the higher-resolution graphics and iPad-specific optimizations will surely result in better gaming experiences on the iPad, we're not sure if existing owners of iPhone games will be interested in the perceived "iPad tax" for an optimized version -- your regular iPhone games will work on both devices, after all.
Perhaps enhanced iPad games will have "downscaled" versions for iPhone, or perhaps some developers will discover a way to bundle both together? It's not clear, but we're reaching out to Apple to clarify some of the App Store functionality and will talk with developers to get their take on the new device. The new SDK is available today, so many iPhone developers will be busy exploring what's new for iPad.

Is this how the iPod Touch looks like in Texas?

It can have a border, but why does it have to be so bloody thick? It takes away from the cleanliness of the overall design. It doesn't look nearly as sleek and sexy as Apple's other devices.

Yeah, it makes it look like a kid's toy or something. Kind of like a leapster or something: extra thick platic surround so it's got some impact absorption ability.

iKnow iPad sounds a bit turd seeing iPod – changing one vowel only.. But I’d rather pick this one.. than iSlate.. Although, i prefer iTablet.
“After nearly a decade of rumors and speculation, Apple’s finally unveiled the iPad. It’s a half-inch thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds, with a 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen IPS LCD display, and it’s running a custom 1GHz Apple “A4 chip developed by the P.A. Semi team, with a 10-hour battery life and a month of standby. It’ll come in 16, 32, and 64GB sizes, and it’s got the expected connectivity:”
The best tablet in whole world indeed via engadget. Details:

Having to buy separate apps is one more nail in the coffin. It's like the iPod Touch Go.

iPhone apps can sell stuff inside, so I'm pretty sure you buy the iphone version and pay an extra $1 for the ipad part of the app.
It's extra work, don't expect it to be free or attached to the price for iphone users. And 3d games shouldn't charge extra because they can render to any resolution.

If you are doing something like reading a book or a manual you will probably need some sort of boarder. I think it was designed like that to be held with two hands.
If it didn't have that boarder your thumbs might get in the way or you may accidentally touch something in the touchscreen area. I don't like it either, but I see why they did it.

well that makes sense, but hell they could have just put a border on the bottom of the damn thing...like the iPhone...

I see all these border comments here and on Engadget and I just don't agree. The tablet is made to be rotated and viewed at different angles. Holding it with one hand would tire your wrist, and 2 hands would be most comfortable when reading a paper or playing a game. Thus, I think having a border surrounding the whole screen is a good idea.
The problems I have with this device so far are the at&t factor, the price(s), and the at&t factor.

I'm sure it works fine and all that, but I see absolutely no reason why an everyday person would want this.

Well it does everything a netbook is meant to do, at about the same price (same price as the quality ones anyway, like EeePC). Seems to be that this is the netbook for Mac families.

Doctors and students. Well, students. No way is the medical community organized enough to get something like this actually working for them (man do we need the invisible hand of capitalism to give health care a shove in the right direction).

im just thinking there should be an app where i can sync my whole house. you know, start the tv, microwave, turn on/off lights, my car, console, computer. i would look totally badass.
THAT WOULD BE USEFUL, AND MAKE YOU LOOK GOOD DOING IT
but since there isn't, the only thing it does right is the screen for books?

Whole house control would be awesome. They have it through Nokia in Finland, why must the US be always behind in terms of wireless tech?

there is a difference tho...Apple is the company that makes all the devices people seem to like....while Windows is just an OS....nothing more...MS has other software and hardware that it makes....so hating Windows is no biggie
and yea....I wanna fight about it...

As everyone else has pointed out:
The only real benefit this has over a netbook is the fact that it's got a touch screen and plenty of "apps" that you can buy.
Is that really worth the extra cost?

I think the device is hindered by the iPhone OS they have it running on. No multitasking? Not even a camera for cheap video conferencing? They'll make it an accessory that you can pay them more money for.
They could have done a bit more with it, but really this feels like another attempt at selling their apps and making an e-reader with eye candy. It's probably a great Kindle replacement, but I would prefer to browse the web with a full featured flash enabled browser and use a real keyboard without having to pay for an extra dock. The thing is really a huge iPod touch.
The only thing that's awesome is their data plan. They've made AT&T their bitch.

@Soulblade my guess is the AT&T partnership is a way for AT&T to keep Exclusivity on the iPhone just a LITTLE while longer....my Guess is we won't see an iPhone on VZ until their LTE network starts to roll out late next year....
of course I could be wrong and Apple could do a gimped CDMA version of the iPhone to put on VZ...

Chris - you're probably right on the exclusivity thing. I bet they could put this on VZ, esp since you won't need the voice part anymore and VZ already does data over 3G. I'm sure they already have a CDMA one in development.
What's funnier is that AT&T's network is already crippled from the iPhone, and it's going to get a lot worse if the Apple fanboys show up to purchase this thing. I think Apple wants to ruin them so they can buy it up and fix it. Then they'll own a slice of every part in the whole ecosystem.

Soulblade I would sacrifice not using two hand for the bigger touchscreen any day. I could view stuff on my phone but navigation and having to constantly scroll down sucked and is time consuming. Eventually you would end up breaking out a book or manual anyway. With this I could see the pages full screen and not have to worry about carrying all of the physical literature around...
At least this is what I'm telling my boss when he ask why I need one! ;)
