We couldn't care less about our email, videos and music, all we wanted to know is if the newly announced iPad could play games. The answer? If you've been spending a fortune in $0.99 chunks on iPhone games, you've already got a big iPad library. The device, as just announced by Apple, plays all your iPhone apps unmodified, out of the box. That said, to take advantage of the system's full screen, devs will have to implement some modifications to their apps.
We're not sure if we're happy or sad about this, as we were kind of hoping for a whole new gaming platform -- and we're not convinced a lot of games will translate well from the iPhone, even if they technically work. Oh well, Jobs is still talking, maybe he'll have something else for us.
Update: The game Apple chose to feature at the iPad debut event was Gameloft's FPS N.O.V.A. It's kind of an odd choice though, right? It's a neat trick for a phone, but does it stack up on a larger screen? Additionally, EA showed off an updated Need for Speed: Shift (again, the iPhone version; hardly akin to the console iterations). Look for the iPad versions of both these games later this year.

Were you planning on going on an anti-Apple rampage all day today? Or are there scheduled start and stop times.
I wouldn't want to miss anything.
Anyway, I won't be getting this. It doesn't do enough.

They've listed gaming as a key feature of the device...
But you're right. Gamers have more sense. For the likely price of this POS, we could buy ALL THREE CONSOLES.

WiFi Only: 16GB - $499, 32GB - $599, 64GB - $699
3G Version (Unlocked btw): 16GB - $629, 32GB - $729, 64GB - $829
3G Data (AT&T Only): 250MB limit - $14.95/mo., Unlimited - $29.95/mo.
Basically, if you want 3G, it's $130 more. Also, WiFi only versions are available in late March, 3G version in April.
As a gaming device, this is pretty stupid. However, it's a pretty good alternative to a netbook, and not that much more than one. The videos showed it being silky smooth.

thats more competitive than i expected from Apple. but still pretty steep considering what it is though. 250MB limit is pretty worthless and $30 a month gets pretty expensive to use one device on top of your cell phone. but over all i think they priced it well. they might actually sell some at this price point. i would still rather spend that $500 on a nice netbook but thats me

@ Brian you're right it isn't really competitive but considering Apple's history of astronomical pricing i have to say i was surprised that you could get one (albeit a lame one) for $500. but like you said you can get a damn fine netbook for $500. the ASUS 1201N comes to mind.

RTS games would probably work as is but yes they would need to do some control tweaking otherwise. the integrated touch software in Windows 7 works quite well. i just hope fingers are accurate enough on that small of a screen. is it a 7" or 10"? i don't remember.

You can apparently play them at their original size or the iPad can pixel double them to play them full screen. So as Kotaku said: tiny or blurry, take your pick.
To be fair Apple did say that devs were being given the tools to adapt their applications to the new screen size today. It's just a matter of how many will bother.

For titles that use a lot of raster graphics and low quality textures, yes. Not so much for games that deliberately use pixel art or vectors. Which is a fair number. I imagine Canabalt will be just as large and as good as it is online in a browser.

Man the Microsoft Courier is going to destroy this so badly:

Realistically though, it will be labeled a copycat and ignored by the Apple-worshipping hordes nearly instantly.

As soon as Apple comes out with a product that is like the Ipad, but can play serous games, like Modern Warfare 2 etc. Only then I will consider buying that product, but until that day comes, I am saving my money.
