Considering that an entire game's worth of content was supposedly cut from Final Fantasy XIII, one could imagine there's a veritable gold mine of content waiting to be polished and released as DLC. Apparently not, however, as producer Yoshinori Kitase has allegedly indicated, "at present we're not considering [DLC]." The quote is said to originate from a brief interview featured in an Ultima Guide for the game (via FFReunion), and Kitase apparently added that DLC is still "possible," but it's just not something Square Enix is working on right now.
Kitase cited the team's drive to create a complete experience in the final retail game as one of the contributing factors to putting DLC plans aside. He also pointed to the game's exceedingly long development time and the developers' focus on getting the game finished as soon as possible. Clearly, "asap" has a different meaning in Japan.

Considering the length of most FF games, I'm sure I'll be fine without DLC.

well as a FF fan i gotta say it feels short after you beat the game 13 chapters with 65 missions and most of your time will be spent on leveling all optima jobs ^_^

Wow, if they make DLC the inevitable GOTY edition for Xbox will come in a suitcase.

Well, in fairness, I suppose they might need a second Blu-Ray as well. I was more making a joke about how sick I am of every game coming out with their GOTY or Complete version or whatever as an excuse to jack up the price instead of just dropping the price of the DLC. I'm quite happy to hear this game will actually be feature complete upon release.

Except GotY editions are usually cheaper in the long run...
And FFXIII only uses a single-layer BD, so they wouldn't need two.

Fallout 3 was $60. LBP was $60. I can't think of too many more of the top of my head, but that's definitely the general impression I have.
Also, didn't know about the SL BD. Though I am confused as to how ~24GB over three discs for Xbox vs ~25GB for PS3 means that stuff had to get cut-out of and downgraded in the Xbox version (probably redundancies?).

trust me, after playing the Japanese version. I would be surprised if this game would even get to be GOTY at all. Definitely won't beat Mass Effect 2 as an RPG of the year. If it was released last year, the only award it might win would be the best looking game. But this year, it might not even win it.

Well your average dual-layer DVD is around 8GB, a little more I believe but that's beside the point.
FF13 will be on 3 of these DVDs. So 3*8=24, which is conveniently close enough to a single layer Blu-ray disc.
That's why they cut a games worth of content. They cut the entire second half of a dual-layer Blu-ray disc. Rather than have a 50GB game appear on 1 PS3 disc but 6 discs for the 360, they made a bunch of cuts and compromises to be "fair".

I think it'd be pretty badass to have a game that long. You'd really feel a sense of accomplishment when you got to the 4th disk.

Japan sure isn't getting how DLC works do they? America has it almost refined to a science, but Japan's still in the "debating whether or not to even try making DLC" phase. The question S-E should be asking is less "Should we make DLC?" and more "What kind of cool crap can we use as DLC?".
Sure we criticize Western developers for having DLC ready pre-launch, but at least they have a clue on what to do on the DLC front.

While it's overpriced, the only DLC I really enjoy is for multiplayer shooters, because it's nice to have something new injected in the playlists over time. Beyond that, most DLC just seems to be either stuff that should've shipped with the game or could just be in the sequel. Unless of course they just made a game a platform and continually released DLC for it (i.e. LBP), in which case I'm happy to pay for it. But the single DLC episode is pretty weak in my opinion.

The game is even more linear than other FFs and jrpgs, I'm wondering what the hell they would do with DLC anyway. They left themselves virtually no room to do anything in that aspect.

They could use as DLC all the content that was dropped that resulted in FFXIII being such a linear game. Just a hunch. Adding enough DLC to turn a linear game into a sandbox roamer would be impressive indeed.

Also damn near impossible. And the game is just as linear as FF X and I can definitely see how DLC could be used in that, hypothetically speaking of course.

Hard to do when you're virtually traveling in a straight line the entire time.

Think of what they add to the international editions of Final Fantasy, like in 10 with the extra bosses and the 'dark aeons'. Most of those additions would probably qualify as dlc nowadays.

The core game is linear but there are still plenty of hunting quest missions to partake in the game. Lots of room for additional content ... have some imagination.

Might want to deflect the imagination insults to the makers of your beloved jrpg genre. They need it much more than I do.

It wasn't an insult. I was actually trying to be nice in responding to your brain dead comment. If you can't see where additional content could fit into any game them you have no imagination. Period. That, or you are just trolling again.

SE deserves cheers for this, except for things like Rock Band I think DLC is an abomination and only gives developers a way to nickel and dime people to death by purposely excluding things from the final game that should have been there in the first place.

Makes far more sense.. 10years of re playing 13 would be rediculous.. but if so far there's 13, VS & the PSP one.. how many more will be added before they mess up the events.. like FFVII has slightly different events in the reactor where Sephiroth lost it..

Square Enix doesn't have a different definition of "asap", other developers just have a different definition of the word "finished". Need I say more?

Reviews from Japan indicate that this game is not as open world as previous entries in the series. Part of the fun of FFVII was exploring all around the globe, raising/racing chocobos, defeating previously unstoppable monsters, etc. If that's not what this game is about, then I don't want it. Can anyone confirm this?

not a fan of linear rpg's here, I loved the open world exploring of FFVII and VIII.
I have to say my interest in this game went down because the linearity of it.

Well if they don't plan of it...thats fine. But I really see them testing the waters with this. They mention that a whole games worth of content was axed...so if gamers suddenly start chanting for MOAR ff13 content, SE can deliver with a $30-$40 price tag and have it semi justifiable. And every FF fan know that they will be there blindly with money in hand regardless.
