According to horror film news site Bloody Disgusting, anonymous sources have revealed that Warner Bros. Pictures is currently looking to reboot its recently purchased, long dormant Mortal Kombat film franchise. "But Joystiq," you might be asking, "why has the Mortal Kombat film franchise been long dormant?" Our dear, naive readers: This is why the Mortal Kombat film franchise has been long dormant. If you've got friends at the WB, you should consider forwarding them that little slice of cinematic history.
Bloody Disgusting reports that Oren Uziel, a new screenwriter who penned a yet-to-be-produced murder mystery titled Shimmer Lake, is being considered to write the film. Now, we've never met Uziel, but we hope he heeds our advice: Take the job. We guarantee it will be the easiest writing gig you'll ever have.

Hey now. I remember being 10 years old and really liking the Mortal Kombat movies.

I liked the first when I was a kid, probably only because of the fight scene music. That theme is a classic, its like a techno Rocky theme. The 2nd one was just terrible on all fronts.

I remember being 10 and liking it too. The soundtrack was the first cd I ever bought and my friends and I used it for fighting music.
The synth just makes you want to throw your arms, punch-like.

If they were $200, I'd be disappointed. $200 is average designer price... too cheap for the hollywood superstar cage is.

Why does Hollywood think that of all genres fighting games would make great movies?

Probably because most blockbuster action films are nothing but gun fights and fist fights, sprinkled with a bit of special effects?

Put some of the TDK team on it. Might be semi decent.

The Mortal Kombat series was the best example of a "so bad its good" series.
I hope the revival ones are every bit as "bad", in a good way.
That YouTube link is proof enough.

My first thought is whyyyyy?!
But yeah, the first MK movie was alright. Of course, I was 14.
Well, and it had Christopher Lambert. That helped.

I actually watched the Legend of Chun Li yesterday. I can't tell you much it pissed me off to see Liu Kang (Robin Shou as Gen) getting his ass kicked by that lame-o excuse for an M. Bison.

Hey, Annihilation was downright awful, sure, but the first Mortal Kombat movie, while still not good by any means, was actually fun and captured the mood of the games perfectly. In that regard I'd say it's hands down the best video game movie, though obviously that isn't saying much (and I've still yet to see Silent Hill).
I think as long as they realize not to take it too seriously, but not make it downright awful like Annihilation was, this could be a fun little movie. And hell, I'd still rather watch either Mortal Kombat movie over both the upcoming King of Fighters and Tekken movies.

Friends and I really enjoyed the first one and watched it a few times. I also loved the music in it and bought the CD.
The sequel, that just looked cheap and shoddy.
Although I would watch a new film in the series it's a little strange to think of a reboot isn't it? The first film was made on the popularity of the games, at that time, and most of the fans knowing the mythology. Remember when the games were first released? They had all those Mortal Mondays, or whatever day the games were released on.

Hmm.... well as long as it manages to reach the first one's standards, it should be ok..... unless it gets a director on the same level as Uwe >,

Like I said about the movies being "so bad it's good", as I thought about it more, that pretty much makes them the perfect game->movie adaptations, given Mortal Kombat.
I mean, heck, this is the source material:

all they REALLY have to do is get unknown actors with just a teeny bit of athleticism (unlike the originals) that actually look like the characters and just stick to the games' story lines.
the one thing i don't understand when translating a game into film is this incessant need to completely alter the story. MK has enough of a following that if they were true to the game story, fans would see it and it might make some cash.

This makes sense considering how popular Mortal Kombat is these days, like when they decided to make a Max Payne movie. Almost 10 years after the game came out and people had forgotten about it. I'm being sarcastic of course. Who the hell cares about Mortal Kombat anymore?
Instead let's focus on a Halo movie. God of War movie. Gears of War movie. Assassin's Creed movie. You know, games that are popular today, not making movies of 20 year old franchises. Maybe next they'll announce a Streets of Rage movie?

I guess it fits in with the desire to make movies based off 40 year old TV shows and remake 20 year old movies.

I think when Shao Kahn asked Rain did he make his victim suffer and when he found out Rain just killed him - so he killed Rain - was the dumbest thing I've ever seen. The 2nd movie is good for laughs only

Especially in context: He only did that because his father had previously asked him the same question and it was some kind of...wait, Shao Khan's father? It was Shao Khan, we didn't need to see his father, and he didn't need to be put down by him! What where they thinking?

The first MK was entertaining and a good translation of game to film.
And hey, it was memorable enough that its soundtrack became the only techno/dance song played for the next 3 years. At least, at awkward middle school dances when the DJ got bored.
The second movie was, on the other hand, one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Mortal Kombat is the greatest fighting genre series out there. They were the first to have the balls to have blood and hardcore death.
I hope Mortal Kombat never dies.

Hell, they even brought a dead guy back to fight.
