It's not really an either-or situation. Both the PS3 and the iPad are overpriced at $600.

iPad starts at $499. It essentially is Apple's netbook. Not a bad route, imo.

It's not Apple's netbook, or it would be running OSX and have a keyboard. It's Apple's tablet. $500 for a glorified iPhone without the phone (read iPod Touch), that's pretty much as powerful as the much smaller Nexus One (but without flash?), I'll pass. At least put an OLED screen on it...

@ Kid Icarus

No, it's Apple's DS LL.

PS, I love Apple products, but this really takes the bag o' poo. Seriously, it's just the iPhone's OS stretched which is exactly what you DON'T do with tablet OSes. Didn't they learn from PC Tablets that just shoved Windows on those things? It doesn't work.

@Ben: Apple doesn't have a netbook and went on record saying they felt netbooks didn't properly fill the gap between what an iPhone can do and what a Macbook can do. If you find the iPad so pointless, it would just as acceptable to say the same about a netbook considering it is just a smaller less powerful laptop, but essentially does the same thing (but worse). However, there is still a place for it for consumers. It will be the same with the iPad, and I don't doubt it will be attracting the "netbook crowd". So yes, the Apple iPad can definitely be called Apple's version of a netbook.

@Orion: One significant difference. Windows tablets were adding touch to a non-touch interface. iPad will be making a touch interface... bigger.

A netbook can do far more than this thing.. that is for sure. Especially the netbooks with ion videocards.

@wicko: Yes, a netbook can "do more" than the iPad, but I think you misunderstood me (otherwise, I don't see your point). I said a netbook essentially does exactly what a laptop does, only worse. A netbook is an underpowered small laptop.

Just wanted to share, the above is an analog joystiq/mouse on the left and a full keyboard split across the top of the device. It also run full tablet version of Xp/vista/7 and does both stylus and finger touch navigation. All of the above include all professional art aps and the usual tablet apps handwriting rec. that comes with windows.

Apple may be the best tablet for now, but seeing it, lacking some core-features, makes a user want to think twice before buying this one.

I guess, its Sans the GPS/Flash/Camera makes it a real Turn-off for aspiring buyers to get this one. On the brighter side, at least the price isn't
that much steep, although I doubt that users would buy the 500 USD 16GIG iPad -- To think that its capacity is not expandable, meaning you're going to spend your days with that limitation. Details:

@ Orion - Putting Mac OS on here is exactly what they shouldn't have done, and didn't do. The iPhone OS already optimised for touch, so as a tablet platform it makes much more sense than Mac OS, at least from a "slickness" standpoint.

Equally I can see the appeal of a Mac OS tablet, but that would be pretty much like putting Windows on a tablet, it just wouldn't feel awesome and would probably be clunky. Are they still making Modbooks? That'll do.

You have to remember, it has a smartphone processor. It's not going to be significantly faster than an iphone. Apple makes its processor sound great, but it's standard fare for smart phones, and it looks to be a bit slower than Samsung's 1ghz smartphone processor announced last september.

it's not a smartphone processor. it's a processor that hasn't been in anything before. so if there's a reason to doubt it's ability, it's that.

Wrong because as much as I enjoy apple products, this one is a flop. I dont even use the windows world anymore with both a mac desktop and laptop, but there's absolutely no reason to use this product.

It has no pen, so anyone who is a mac fan but use tablets for art cant turn to this. It's not nearly as portable as an ipod touch or iphone. You're basically paying more for a larger screen and less portability.

Obviously its an ARM processor, which is why its running iphone apps.

1Ghz ARM is fast, it should be just as fast as Samsung's processor and the Snapdragon.

The real question is that its an SoC (system on chip) and Apple has licensed a Imagine's GPU technology. The graphics card in question in this iPad will likely be the real indicator of technology.

Just a minor quibble with your shit-on-everything train...

"Assisted GPS" on the 3G devices is actually better than simple ol' GPS. It's a poorly chosen name that sounds negative or stunted, but it's actually the opposite. It's real GPS, but can also use WiFi and Cell tower triangulation that begin the location process while the standard GPS is still acquiring the satellites, and thusly speeds up the entire "GPS" experience. FYI.
