The Office of Naval Research is currently conducting research in video game training that it says has "surprising" results in regards to military personnel reaction time and adaptability in the fight against terror. According to an article available on the Department of Defense's official website, doctor of educational psychology and program officer Ray Perez said the research has discovered that video game players perform "10 to 20 percent higher in terms of perceptual and cognitive ability" than non-gamers.
Citing a need for soldiers to be "agile problem solvers" and "agile thinkers," Perez notes that video game training can help field adaptability and the "cognitive advances" derived from the training can last up to two and a half years.
"We know that video games can increase perceptual abilities and short-term memory," Perez said, adding games allow players to focus longer and expand the field of vision compared to non-gamers. If it means the brave men and women serving have a better chance of coming home, we're all for it.

Well I was going along the lines of anyone who joins the military is a moron but of course not all gamers join the military. So indeed you are correct.

You're right, everyone in the military is a moron. They should quit, and we should invite every other country in the world over for tea so we can laugh about how stupid we've all been, especially since none of them would try and make a move now that we're defenseless.

I wonder why it took them this long to have invested some research in this since it was a prominent point in the movie Toys when it came out back in 1992.

I'd take his reply with a grain of salt. I got into the beta, but all the downloads kinda put me off, and the servers at the time weren't up.
I've heard it's one of those "love it or hate it" type games. Either you'll fall in love with what they've done, or you'll just not like it at all. Try renting it first.

The only way that picture could've been any better was if the guy was holding a Twinkie. Still glorious though.

With the increase in Drone fighting I'm surprised it has taken this long for the military to talk about it.
However, when I start hearing about recruitment of 12 year old twitch gamers to pilot said drones I'll give those games-corrupting-the-youth nay sayers a moment of my time.
Well, that or I'll go back to playing TF2.
TF2 is a hell of a game.

Sourcess overseas are currently reporting a large spike in US casualites. Most are caused by the soldiers attempting to "rocket jump" into terrorist strongholds, and the covert operatives attaching paper masks to their faces.

I wonder if they also factored in things like poor eye sight. I mean my vision has been steadily getting worse ever since middle-school, which was around the time I really started getting into computers.
I suppose gamers might not make the best real world snipers, but we could make for slightly better grunts.

Well you march right back to whoever told you that and hold up a printout of this article!
"If I'm such a terrorist then how come I'm potentially better than you at fighting terrorists?"
To which the guy/girl will probably reply: "Easy, cause you trained with them so you know all their secrets."

$8500 - $9000 a month?! May I ask how long it took you to reach that salary, what degree you have, what tier school you graduated from, etc.? I'll be graduating soon with a degree in IT (network and systems administration) and have been considering joining the military for a while, so that sounds pretty awesome.

US Army privates make $16-19,000 a year. Pitifully low for such a dangerous job. I guess it makes sense though. There's not much of a market for humanitarian wars, apparently, and it seems that not many people feel the work of these privates is all that necessary or valuable. People sure do pay lip service though.

Yeah the pay may be low but that doesn't include the benefits. Plus you get to live on base for free. If you live off base the military will actually grant you more money to do so. Usually around an extra 600-900 a month depending on the area. Also most of your needs are met. You get free food as well. Plus college is free. So most of the money you make is spent where you want it to be spent. Also after boot camp you can actually graduate at an E3 status.
