A date with Kratos: God of War III hits the US on March 16

Sony has announced (via PlayStation.Blog) that God of War III will launch domestically on March 16. That's just 47 days away (which is exactly 47 days too many). In addition to firming up the date, SCEA released the final box art (it's rated M!) and revealed that a new trailer for the game -- hopefully showcasing the considerable upgrades it has received since the playable demo hit -- will debut on February 11.

A box shot of the Ultimate Edition has also been released -- a package within which ultimate collectors will find a replica Pandora's Box containing the game (shocking, we know) along with collectibles and DLC (it's digital and physical!). Personally, we find a paltry cardboard box rather unbefitting of such a powerful artifact, so we'll be holding out for a "Supreme Ultimate Edition," which will obviously come in a replica Pandora's Temple on the back of a replica Cronos.

zeus is such a bitch, but i guess when they continue the series after the trilogy is over, he is the likely candidate to be main character in a prequel game featuring the war against the titans

I'm hoping for an Ares style final battle over the QTE final battle in GoW2.

SCEA is on a roll with giving us awful box art.

I'm getting a real (bad) MGS4 vibe from this cover art. Who's idea was the EXTREME CLOSE-UP?

I'm fully expecting the cover art for Gran Turismo 5 to be zoomed in shot of the gas cap.

Well seeing how we can't complain about the actual game itself (because it's so Awesome™), I suppose picking on the boxart is sufficient. We can't like the EVERYTHING about the game. Let's face it, it's no Sonic Unleashed.

This is one of the few covers I DO like.
Love it, simple, straight to the point. I hated the MGS4 and Ratchet covers, though.

I agree, the other two had some epic cover art and to follow them up with.. this..?

It's like if they made another Star Wars film and the movie poster was Luke's ear.

Exactly what I was thinking. Imagine someone walking into GameStop that has never played God of War before. Will he be attracted to look at that game? hell no!

Really? I think it is pretty cool. Minimalist and striking. I love it.

That, and the the LE is one of the few LE's that doesn't look like a toy box.

I dig the cover. Always loved the white vs red colors and they made the red really stand out. The expression has the "I'm going to beat someone's ass" look. Granted I don't think Kratos has another look to him.

That's...slightly sooner than I thought. And kinda close to FFXIII.

The box art is pretty lame... But at least we have a release date.

I'm glad they moved the date up from march 31st. It would be dick of me to be playing GoW 3 all day on my wife's b-day.

You just had to say that the game was for her. Then you put it in and 'teach her the controls' and 'show her how to play'. Then when she says that she would never want that and accuses you of just getting it for yourself, you pull the switch and flip more it on her ass, laying down a guilt trip.

"Well sorry for trying to get you something we could both enjoy on your birthday! I spent a lot of time and effort thinking about this and you just throw it back in my face? Sorry I'm not perfect!"

Then scream 'I LOVE YOU!' as you run upstairs crying and lock yourself in the bedroom. Just make sure you quickly grab the game with you, making it look like you were going to throw it out, but you're just taking it upstairs to keep playing in the bedroom.

This is all hypothetical, of course.

No it wouldn't. Just say it's co-op and for this birthday you'd like to try out something new. Order pizza and punch her in the stomach for a magical night.

Danthok this is what you do. 'Roid up and motorboat the hell outta your woman. She'd love that, she'd be smitten by that. Then, when she's all tuckered out from your furious night of passionate, aggressive, gorilla birthday sex, you can sneak away and get your Kratos on.

Again, this is all hypothetical, of course.

No, it's terrible. You're obviously letting your bias for the series get in the way. Go look at the first two covers.

Well I like it. It's different, sure, but I think that's better.

Looking at the first two it's just a guy standing there with knives. It looks almost typical. Not to mention the entire time he is just staring at buildings. It's symbolic to a degree, since it's like his way of showing that he isn't through yet, but still...

I just think this is a refreshing change. The only thing I might've done was add something more to the reflection of his eye.

Oh, and you can't say that I'm biased in favor of the series as I haven't even played the games. I just happen to think the box art looks cool.

I suppose I like it better than the Heavy Rain box art, now THAT is generic.

What? I like the attention to detail. I just would have added something more relevant in the reflection of his eye (perhaps the reflection of the building(s) from the first two games).

But yeah, we can all agree that Europe got the best Heavy Rain box art. I think it's the same reason I like this one though. There's something beautiful in the level of simplicity that's portrayed with great attention to detail.

It's detailed, but simple, like a beautifully rendered origami piece in the rain.

I'm going to buy this - *hard*.

I plan on buying it flaccid, but that's just me.

The box art is nice. It's simple, like has been said before, and eye-catching. Once you see the contrast of lght grey and red, you'll know what you're looking at immediately. BAM, God of War III.

Yeah, it's eye catching. But so is a homeless man taking a shower in McDonald's sprinkler system.
