Game does have LAN, it just has to be connected to the internet to authenticate. Big deal, at least there's no installation restrictions.

Au contraire, I tried installing the first Diablo on an Apple computer the other day and was sorely disappointed.

Haha, but that's the exception that proves the rule. I wish more developers would add support for Windows and OSX out of the box like Blizzard does.

SERIOUSLY! A Mac is a PC as well...in fact I'm about to blow your mind:

http://www.enotes.com/history-fact-finder/science-invention/who-invented-first-personal-computer

Steve Jobs and the Woz are often credited as the inventors of the personal computer. In fact they were the first to receive the National Medal of Technology for doing just that.

I really wish those I'm a Mac ads were never created.

This is even more confusing when you realize that modern Macs are basically IBM-compatible(wow, haven't used that term in ages) x86 PC's anyway. Companies need to advertise that they run on MacOSX or Windows instead of Mac and PC, as if they are two different things.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: PC no longer means Personal Computer, it's not longer an acronym at all. Words change.

PC is synonymous with any personal computer running any variant of the Windows operating system. That's something Microsoft and Apple both agree on, as they have no problem blurting out that fact in every single one of their Windows / Mac ads. It's been this way for as long as I can remember browsing the software isles at Retail Electronic Megastore Incorporated, "PC CD-Rom, requires Windows 95 or higher" "IBM-PC Compatable Floppy Disk, requires Windows 3.1 or higher"

Macs and the average Joe-Consumer Linux boxes are personal computers too, but they aren't "PCs." Words change, and in the current English vernacular, PC is a proper noun.

This comes up almost every time Macs and PCs are mentioned on Joystiq...

-----
@ Naeem - Their "inventing of" the personal computer was that of the Apple II, not the Macintosh. And the "I'm a Mac" ads far from started it, it was IBM-PC Compatible and "PC CD-Rom" "PC DVD-Rom" that started it.

"it's not longer an acronym at all"

It's no longer an acronym, and scratch the "at all."

This is a gaming blog, and more often than not it is populated with pompous PC gamers going off about how gamers don't use Macs. They're every bit a part of the Windows = PC conspiracy as anyone.

This is a total non issue that confuses NO ONE.

If you want to get into a technical debate about linguistics, you should make it a point to know linguistics first.

Words change both form and meaning over time. This is called "linguistic evolution" (the term comes from Ferdinand de Saussure's post-humous book, "Course in General Linguistics, btw). The original form of the acronym was "100% IBM compatible Personal Computer." This was cumbersome, and was shortened to "100% IBM PC compatible."

Again, this was still cumbersome, and worse still, it drew distinctions that were no longer relevant. PC and Apple competitors, like Tandy PCs, had been discontinued. Further, IBM stopped setting the "standard" for the PC platform in the 1990s. Since there were only two hardware configurations to differentiate between, "IBM PC" simply became "PC."

All that to say, a Mac is a "personal computer," but it is not a PC. PC does not stand for "personal computer" anymore. It is no longer an acronym, it is a noun. And what about *nix systems? They're "personal computers" as well. But they're not PCs. Sorry, microsoft haters, but PC = "personal computer using a windows operating system." Don't expect anyone to exchange a 2 letter noun for that description any time soon.

Oh, and for those who say Apple enthusiasts generally aren't gamers--they are absolutely correct. Most "personal computer" games are made for "PC." Mac ports are rare. Macs historically have had poor GPUs (they've gotten better in this regard recently). You can dual boot to play PC games, or try running boot camp, but then you aren't really using Mac OS, now are you?

I just checked dictionary.reference.com, answers.com, merriam-webster.com. Turns out PC, does in fact stand for personal computer! Who would've guessed! And a Mac commercial that does in fact state that it is a PC! Brilliant! And the Xerox PARC? Who's heard of that?

Dictionaries are woefully outdated when it comes to keeping up with linguistic evolution. dictionary.com's #1 definition for "mac" is "a fellow or bud." I'm not aware of anyone who uses the word in that way. It has no entry for "iphone," a devince that is very popular and was invented *3 years ago.*

Same with grammars. Just about every English grammar out there will tell you that English verbs have a subjunctive case, but in practice the subjunctive verb died 50 years ago.

PC no longer means personal computer. Deal with it.

You're not going to "dignify my comment" with a response? Why? Because my evidence was irrefutable? Because a marketing blurb on Apple's website declared macs to be "pcs?"

Marketing departments do not define linguistic trends. Linguistic evolution is sociological in nature; individuals do not have the power to single-handedly alter elements within the linguistic system.

Again, you are WAYYYY out of your depth. Read de Saussure's "Course in General Linguistics," Bloomfield's "Language," and Eco's "The Role of the Reader." Take notes too. Then come back and teach me how languages change over time.

Ok, whatever. Guess my M.A. with an emphasis in general semiotics and linguistics doesn't mean a thing compared to the wisdom of some anonymous apple fanbot. Enjoy running your pc games at a vastly reduced framerate in bootcamp. After all, your mac is a "pc," despite what the industry standard terminology says. I'll just "suffer" with my PC running software in DX10 at 60 fps.

Dude, lighten up. Sure, you're smarter than all of us; that's great. It doesn't make you the President of English, though. Usage is not dictated by mandate. Like you said, it's a living language, and to a significant portion of the population PC still means "personal computer."

As for marketing being an invalid indicator as to English usage, I'd say it was the Mac vs PC television commercials that did more than anything to place the "PC=Windows" notion in the heads of those that carry it. If Apple wants to flip on that and call a Mac a PC, they're within their rights to do so.

Lighten up? I'm not the one who was all piss pants about "Macs are PCs too!!"

Also, it has nothing to do with being "smart." There are many people who've achieved far less than me but were smarter than me by leaps and bounds. Its a question of knowing what you're talking about. I get annoyed when people talk out of their asses and who don't know what they are talking about (like most creationists arguing against evolution or most politicians, er, saying anything at all . . .).

The "word" PC (I use the term "word" loosely here) originated as "100% IBM compatible Personal Computer" (because we all know those 73% IBM compatible personal computers were a real pain!). Over time it experienced a diachronically traceable linguistic evolution, resulting in the present form, which is PC.

PC no longer means "personal computer;" if that were the case, then my PDA would qualify as a "personal computer" (its for personal use, and it is a computer). If you wanted to get technical, my DS, my PSP and my gaming consoles would also be "personal computers."

PC is just a name, a noun. It means "Windows compatible personal computer" now. Just like "Mac" means "Mac OS compatible personal computer," and *nix box means "UNIX derived OS compatible personal computer."

Now if you want to go around and use the long-hand definitions for all of these words, be my guest. But I'm just gonna stick with PC, Mac, and *nix box.

Dictionaries aren't "wrong," they are simply "behind the times." I could go dig up the 1st edition of Webster's at the library and say that "gay" means happy, but who would I be fooling? "Gay" doesn't mean that anymore, its an archaism.

Languages constantly change, but books do not. That's the problem with dictionaries.
