Fairly sure they were talking about the graphics, as it was like #4 on their goty list. And they're right, Dragon Age, while a good game, is a very ugly and dated looking game on consoles.

How dare Bioware be slandered!

"Unfortunately, that still doesn't place Risen in the same league as games like the admittedly underwhelming Dragon Age Origins."

Your writing skills are admittedly underwhelming.

So Piranha Bytes and Deep Silver think it's okie dokie to sell a "beta Xbox 360 version" of Risen to folks in UK, Asia, etc?

What a screw job. If the game is jacked up, then don't freaking release it. Hold it back like you did the Nort American version.

Way to screw over your supporters in those territories. Just because of this and you craptacular way of running things, I won't be touching this.

You better patch their versions, but you probably won't. After the huge Sacred 2 screw job by Deep Silver, I expect nothing from you lazy tools.

I heard really good things about this game from the PC people on neogaf, and I was excited to find out it was coming to 360 here but very sad at the metacritic score for the european version.

But now it looks like the NA version might actually be a solid game after all. Definitely puts it back on my radar, but it comes out near Heavy Rain so I probably won't be able to get it right away.

Bugs and graphical issues aside, unless they completely revamped the last half of the game I'd give it a pass. It's got the standard Piranha Bytes "start strong, finish muddled" vibe going to it. An awful lot of the game is "go explore the far-ass corners of the realm" followed up by "oh look, new stuff popped up in the far-ass corners of the realm, go back there". The last boss felt like it came from a paint-by-numbers NES platformer, just bizarrely out of place next to the rest of the game.

That said, the first half is a rather satisfying revamp of the Gothic franchise, although if you played through all three of those, there won't be anything new here. Everything from the weed-smoking campers in the swamp, to the uptight monastic mages living on a mountain top have been cut and pasted into Risen. Not that you can blame PB, since they made the Gothic franchise but lost the rights to JoWood.

If I've noticed anything about game publishers, it's about getting the product out the door.

if it was shit months ago, I doubt much effort was put out to make it any better.

This is sort of ignoring the quality of the PC version, which I thought was outstanding.

It's also a "spiritual sequel" of sorts to a long running PC series now, Gothic, which I've found quite enjoyable.

I've really enjoyed the news articles on this site for the most part, but to call Dragon Age 'underwhelming', that's just a poor opinion. Dragon Age was an incredible game, and you should keep your shabby opinions to yourself when writing an 'informative' article.

it is underwhelming, at least in the graphics department. comparing it to mass effect 2, which came out right after it and from the same company, you can tell how ugly it is.

What the hell is wrong with the author of this news?
" admittedly underwhelming Dragon Age Origins"? What the hell?

"four months later, Piranha Bytes is putting the true finishing touches to the game"

I doubt Piranha is, considering the 360 port is handled by 3rd party dev and Piranha is only overseeing it.

I felt Risen being way better crpg game than da:origins(I'm gothic fan). Divinity II was better also but don't get me wrong, da was ok. :)

Releasing a beta version for consoles is another thing and it sure sucks. Glad I'm a pc gamer. :)

Did they edit this article, or did everyone's reading comprehension suddenly drop?

All the PC RPGers I know loved Risen, some even preferred it to Dragon Age (but only a few).

I've played the PC version too, which I thought was fun... but apparently the Euro 360 version was a mess, as stated in the article.

1) Piranha Bytes makes suck games. Go check out Gothic 3 if you don't believe me.

2) Here there be low res textures . . . I mean, seriously, these are original xbox quality (actually, I seem to recall the textures in Fable and Jade Empire being better).

3) Ever heard of a friggin texture shader, Piranha Bytes? Graphics *aren't* everything, true, but come on. The 360 has been out for a loooong time, and uses directx 9 APIs. Shader model 3, a part of DirectX 9, has been around FOREVER (released in 2002). We're talking about the same basic technology behind Fallout 3, Oblivion, and DMC4 (all beautifully shaded). Put some damn work into your games!

4) I'm tired of hearing people pan Dragon Age's graphics. They may not be as "crisp" as other games out there, but they're still very good. The art direction is brilliant, as is the use of light sourcing, shadows, and shading. Plus, because the game uses a derivative engine of the aurora engine from neverwinter nights, they can generate large amounts of content very quickly. Which is probably why we're getting an x-pack in March. And hopefully, they'll release user tools so we can create our own Dragon Age adventures.
