I still think posts about the iPad belong nowhere on joystiq. Can we leave this one to engadget? Please?

This post is about games and game developers and their thoughts on development for a new platform; it's not about the iPad. Since the PC can do all the iPad can and more, and is not a game-centric platform, maybe Joystiq should stop posting articles on PC games too?

You can always *not read* the post, if it offends you that much.

it am very excited about the iPad

it has bluetooth so the sixaxis and dualshock could work

also, with a pogo stylus it would work as a wacom with your primary computer or in gaming terms, think mario paint

The Macsturbation has gotten a bit ridiculous, we've had nearly ten post on the iPad when it's gaming capabilities are really secondary to most of what the iPad does. The iPad is getting mad coverage everywhere, it's sort of ridiculous how much free marketing it's getting for no apparent reason other than it being Apple's shiny new product.

Why don't tablet PC's from other manufacturers get this much coverage? Seriously what's so freakin special about Apple that all their products deserve in-depth analysis from every blog in the world? No wonder they are so popular, with this kind of crazy coverage and hype.

Disclaimer: I don't care about Joystiq posting this iPad stuff as I can scroll past these posts, it's just that the whole iPad hype in general is really getting on my nerves, it just doesn't seem like it deserves this treatment, completely disproportionate to any other similar product in the world.

Really, Reader? Considering my netbook is made of brushed aluminum (like a Mac), can multitask, has ten times the storage of the base iPad, more than double the RAM, can run better games, and still costs LESS...

Wow Reader1 , you've trolled your way from Engadget posting about how you love the iPad all the way over the Joystiq. Stop posting, Apple probably isn't paying you enough.

Games for iPad = no. iPhone games are one thing....they fill some niche of people wanting to play portable games but for some reason don't own a PSP or DS......but this iPad thing is just a monstrosity and should be put down.

Most laptops produced in the past 2 years can run most of the games from about 5 years ago on back. All of those games are far and away better than any iPod game AND have extensive user support in the way of mods. Those same laptops tend to cost less than the iPad. Tell me again why I might want an over-sized phone that won't fit in my pocket?

@Reader:

your posts will get a different reception over here. Unlike Engadget, Joystiq isn't preventing IE users from participating in the ranking of comments.

It removes one major bias filter Engadget has on comment rankings, and it won't help your case any at all.

if this thing proves to be a decent e-book reader (compared with Kindle DX 440$) plus all the games, browser, music, etc and that NY times app, i will pay the 500 smackers for it

It may not be a netbook replacement, but it might take ebooks to a whole new level

It won't be decent. Reading on LCD=eye fatigue.

Besides, why pay 440 for a Kindle when you can get a Sony Reader for less? Not to mention they're available internationally, are expandable...

Bradwart, why not tell us about LCD eye fatigue... You seem to be OK reading the Joystiq site 22 hours a day, hasn't slowed you down. :)

Seriously though, I have a Kindle, and I use the computer a lot. I don't really buy into the 'eye fatigue' thing as much as I thought originally. I do read using my Kindle app on my iPhone if I don't have the Kindle with me, and I do alright.

This thing will be a cool e-book reader, maybe not the best, but I'd rather have it than my Kindle... The color and magazine possibilities alone will make people consider it. Add in the apps, browsing, and battery life and it's gonna have a group of people (Kindle/Nook/blog reading folks) lusting after it.

I agree that this should be on Engadget. This is not a gamer's device and it doesn't play gamer's games. I'm gradually losing respect for the gaming publications that praise the iPhone as a legitimate gaming device.

Gimmicky controls + huge library of (mostly awful) games =/= great game device. Didn't we learn this lesson the first time with the Wii?

And this will be the last time I comment on an iPad post, so you're not getting my hits!

Is the DS a legitimate gaming device? Does it allow you to play "gamer's games"? Well, you can now play GTA:Chinatown Wars on the iPhone and it's an almost exact port of the DS version. There will be many more games to follow. The iPad is more powerful than the iPhone or iPod Touch. Developers with some time will be able to make amazing games for the device. If you were truly a "gamer's gamer" then you would be platform agnostic and appeciate good games wherever they fall. Ignoring the iPhone and iPad will just cut you out of A LOT of good gaming in the future. Your loss.

@Jowhatever

The iPad is not a gaming device. Why? Because it doesn't have any buttons! The DS offers BOTH a touch screen interface AND buttons, something the iPad lacks.

And did you read the quotes from people saying 'we'll wait and see if this thing takes off before we really work with it"?

The iPad isn't an amazing device. It's a big iPod touch with a jumbo price tag.

I like how my post got downvoted but everyone else saying the same thing gets upvoted. But yea, the iphone is not a serious alternative to a ds or psp and this is even less of one. Tell me when some serious "gamers games" come out for the iPad and I'll listen, but right now it's not a gaming console just because it has some casual games on it.

Uh, dude, the device clearly has buttons, they're just touch sensitive rather than pressure sensitive. Look at the corners of the screen in the screenshots, there are touch d-pads and buttons. Some of my favorite games on the DS are ones that incorporate the touch screen/stylus so well that I don't need to use the scrunched buttons that give me carpal tunnel such as geometry wars, advance wars days of ruin. As much as I love my mario kart, my hands literally go numb after 2 or 3 races because the buttons are simply insanely packed together tight. Def. not designed for farmer's hands. The funny thing is, when Nintendo with the new jumbo DS (or Apple with this new Tablet) make larger versions of their products that suit the needs of less mobile and/or people who over the age of 12, they receive ridicule and criticism which, in my opinion, is extremely unfair. It's really selective criticism that people have a problem with the super-size DS or the apple tablet but have no problem with the nano or the psp go for being two small. It's like the three bears only the chair that's too small is fine to you all because "small is cool" because life would just be horrible with something that can't be stuffed into a change pocket in a size zero women's pair of pants.

Lotta funny comments here from people declaring that the iPad/iPhone isn't a gaming device. You're wasting your time. It's already a gaming device, it happened while you were sleeping, but yeah, you should stay really mad about it, even if it doesn't affect you at all, since you'd never want one or use one.

You guys dissing the iPad must not have seen the Revolutionary and Magical unveiling of this device. It is redefining video-games. Haven't you ever thought...man, I wish I could play a FPS, but without a keyboard or mouse, instead using a touchscreen directional pad, on an underpowered device that is awkward to hold and won't fit in your pocket. Redefined

/seconded on the petition to ban all iPhone and iPad game related news from this site.

i know the Ipad is not meant to be a gaming device, but it is a main feature and stuck on this site so lets beat it up 2.

are the handheld developers losing their minds or something ?
when did handheld gaming ever go backwards like it has recently...

DSI XL... yeah i can fit that in my pocket now.

Ipad... yes now i can really show off my ipod. now you have to sit to play most games and probably leave the ipad on a desk. i dont see how holding this device and using the touch buttons will be fun.

pspGO... i wont go there.. its gotten its bad rap already and sales have proven its 'OWN' failure, but somehow proved to be a catalyst for people to buy more psp's.

I don't get all the hate for the iPad on this site. I mean yeah it's a pile of useless poo for tech dudes like us but....you don't have to buy it. If you don't like it just DON'T POST HERE ABOUT IT. All you're going to do is infuriate yourself further because you're doing nothing but talking MORE about the damn iPad.

Anyway, it's a new potential device to game on so Joystiq is just doing their job and covering it. I mean no one would complain if we had 4,000 articles about a new Nintendo handheld, right?

Also, remember when the iPhone launched and tried to be a gaming handheld and we all laughed? Well it's been a few years and it's found it's niche market. It doesn't replace the DS or PSP but it HAS it's place (for me that place is in meetings and online at the bank). The iPad might surprise us and find it's place too.

.....or die. Please god let it die like Apple TV.
