I'm not a Shooter fan, but I still love this concept. I can't wait until other genres take inspiration from it.

WoW is an obvious one, but I could see a Dynasty Warrirors version too.... well... maybe. I might be the only one who still likes that game....

I agree with you... about the FPS part, not Dynasty Warriors, though.

MAG really lets you appreciate the scope of the whole 'war'. Also, I appreciated the addition of bonus points for non-shooting jobs, such as the medic.

It's a little weird not having a single player mode, but like most FPS's, it's not really missing it because they're usually just tacked on in this genre.

I’d love to be a healer in this game. The way players are forced to cooperate or fail, reminds me of WoW, but also of more traditional shooters like Team Fortress or Counter-strike. Nevertheless, the sheer scale of this game puts it in the massive territory for me. I would love to be a healer and keep my buddies alive just like I do in WoW.

I really like the way this sounds. I wish it was on the 360, or that I had a PS3. I like FPS games that reward me for being more of a "support" player. I'm definitely not the best "assaulter" around, but I'm a hell of a team player, I like healing/fixing/etc. That's why I love the support class in Bad Company so much. And this game sounds like a much more badass version of that.

Yeah, cause ME screams innovative for being a shooter disguised as an RPG that derives heavily from every sci-fi movie in the last 30 years.

The overall tone of the review is that MAG could be a great game in theory, but in practice it is a frustrating mess.

In the meantime, Justin got to review Mass Effect 2. Really pays to be the big brother some times.

I don't think that's what he meant.

The game is good in practice, the review is just pointing out that unlike other games, team work is given a far greater priority here than in any other game. That even if you arent a FPS prodigy, that you can be of aid in battle.

You just need to play this game, give it a few hours, and you'll understand, oh and if you find a clan, make sure to clear your schedule for the whole week, as time will fly...

Yeah, take a second to re-read.

I'm not sure how Mass Effect has leaked into other reviews, but it's annoying as Hell and makes me dislike the fans of it even more.

Noshino is back??!!?!!? Awesome!

Anyway as for Copa. He said the game is awesome but if you get a group of 133t tardos who like to play Rambo you'll lose. Reading and comprehending are distinct but equally important skills.

I read through the review again to see if I was being unfair, and two words come to mind: Shadowrun and Warhawk.

Online-only, steep learning curve, no tutorial. The game "hypothetically" (Justin's words) works great if you are playing with 127 buddies who employ "communication, teamwork and leadership... When just one of them is absent, it's a total nightmare."

I'm not seeing it. The number of PSN users with headsets has improved, but it still isn't great. Unless you are part of an amazing clan, it looks like it is almost impossible to hit this game's sweet spot.

How can it be a theory when Griffin said that he experienced it as a great game?

To add to your comments Chris, the game could become a flash in the pan - but I don't think it will just die for 1 reason - its inbuilt clan system.

If you have a group of mates, who can work together (or get drunk together), your squad can turn the tide for you team - the games system of keeping clans together makes play with freinds even better (Even just during Beta).

I want to be in a clan in this game, I want to be part of a team, and winners at that. This means I will have to get good and be able to follow/give orders or see the direction they are going from just their gameplay - I have 3 mates with PS3's and we plan to get on there together.

I don't think this a phenomenon contained to just MAG, though. Play pretty much any team-based FPS and you'll almost always certainly lose horribly if everyone's just clowning around. Then once you play a game where everyone works together and wins spectacularly, you feel like Jesus until find another poor teamwork game.

I guess the game just makes it EVEN THAT MUCH MORE SO considering you've got a million more people involved in this.

I do think this game might be a bit flash in the pan, as you described the enjoyment of learning together, that will soon fade, and when less people start playing the game, that large maximum player number will start to be over your head, and soon the game will just be empty.

Granted, that might take awhile, but it's going to happen. It is sort of fated to be this way, unlike many smaller scale FPS.

I've played the finished game for 12 hours or so, enough to level up some, I played all of the beta stages too. I really like it. Teamwork makes or breaks things for this. Also the command structure too. Marking targets, calling in airstrikes and so forth.

Even if it burns bright and is gone, I will have loved playing this game and have gotten my moneys worth out of it. The domination (128 per side) maps are filling pretty readily this week so far. Even if its a flash in a pan, I'll have called it a great flash and ballsy too. I think Zipper is great.

I'm a huge fan of strategy and tactics in combat. And while I enjoyed Modern Warfare, it didn't really do much with either strategy and tactics. Yes, it took some skill but it's a very single-player oriented game as opposed to MAG. The whole idea of actual combat using squads and platoons, leaders and commanders, actual strategy and tactics, I love it! Now if only I had a reliable internet connection.

Now, I'm not saying MAG is a bad game (I haven't played it), but has Joystiq ever given a "bad review"? Not like, "oh, this review is terrible", because they've given plenty of those, but a "this game is terrible"?

Can someone to link me to one if they did?

The Snap Judgments can have some pretty blunt opinions in them (depending on if the person playing it stopped due to frustration):

I wouldn't really say the "snap judgments" are actual reviews, considering they're just slight first impressions of the game, really.

Dark Void is really the only representation of a negative review, seeing as how Left 4 Dead 2's review was discounted because someone is pissy they can't do well at it.

Joystiq, you need to hire someone that can actually review games instead of handing it off to your news writers. They generally (it seems) post the hype and then they give into it. Getting an actual position for reviewing games as a specialization seems to be a better way to get an honest and informative insight on the games themselves.

It takes more than just 10 minutes to get the hang of. I played in the beta and it took me a few hours, especially on the larger maps, just to feel comfortable. Hopefully you'll be put into a squad with some experienced players, that will help a great deal.

Cohesive teamwork is great, and MAG really is set up to maximize on it. You get extra XP for a kill if you are near the objective your squad leader set, for example.

Really, I played the beta (which was more of a demo) and it was kind of lack luster. The battles got boring and generic really quickly, and there wasn't really anything it did that other games have done better. It was okay to try but not something I would invest my money into

I was really worried about the "team" aspect of this game and still am skeptical. If I can't get a team of 6 in Squad Battle in Halo 3 to work as a team, I can't imagine having much success in MAG =/ Looks brilliant and awfully fun though and at least worth a good rental.

You're rewarded more for doing things as a squad and completing objectives than if you were to go lone wolf and try to rack up kill streaks. You'd probably survive a lot longer too.

incendious, in MW2 if you play domination or sabotage you get rewarded more for killing people around the objectives but still 90% of the people just run out on their own or camp.

MAG is one of those games that is going to be much better in 6 months or so after all the n00bs are either molded into veterans by experience or decide its not their thing and move on to something else. At that point it'll probably settle into a really hardcore community where most people play the game as designed and n00bs who are just getting into it can be guided by either example or explicitly guided by veteran squadmates.

Here, two days after release, it's mostly the blind leading the blind for the time being with a few battle hardened beta guys and ADD afflicted people who want an instant gelled community getting frustrated, etc, and being overly critical.

In fact, I can see some people who are really into it, playing this game consistently for YEARS if Zipper supports it well, given its depth and the fun/buzz of being in a well executed match.

But until then it'll be a roller coaster. It's not even fully released worldwide, yet. So we've got a few months yet of this being a n00bfest.

I have a PS3 and all, but I really wish this were a PC game.
It just seems like the kind of game that'd thrive much better in the PC environment. It's not even the better controls thing, it's just that, well, IMO, it's much easier to communicate and coordinate with strangers via text while playing in a game. I think a lot of people will also feel that way!
I'm still probably going to get this when the price drops, though!

The concept is pretty much awesome. It's like PC Battlefield to the extreme :x

I don't understand that. Playing with a keyboard and mouse at the same time is one of the most awkard gaming experiences I have ever had. A keyboard was not originaly made for gaming, but for typing. Where as a controller has a specific ergonomic feel made for gaming... Also, as for the text chat thing, how would you type and play at the same time?

I do agree with you that it does have a PC feel though.

I think it's been pretty well established that the best setup for an FPS is keyboard + mouse. That's what all shooters strive for with their controls and why everyone was so excited about the Wii. As it turned out, there's still nothing out there to best it just yet.

I love me some rumbling controller action, but keyboard + mouse is by far the best way to play an FPS.
