My first thought was, "I hope someone pointed out this was Warhammer 40K, and not D&D..."

Also, I though jails were for *punishing* criminals?

Actually, the entire theory behind our criminal justice system is that jail is part of the rehabilitation process. You commit crime, get charged, go to jail, and get released when you are better. Thus the myriad of educational opportunities presented to inmates so that they can work towards changing their life situation.

Otherwise, the death penalty/life imprisonment would be a much bigger part of the system because it would mean that people can't change.

I'd rather see all of the money being pumped into the prisons to "rehabilitate" them going to schools in impoverished areas instead. Start young and give children more options and chances for a future is a better theory to me then waiting for them to do wrong before offering them a college education.

In Penny Arcade today they mentioned D and D was also banned because it leads to fantasies of escape. C. S. Lewis once jokingly said that "the most common enemies of escapism are jailors", and I guess this proves it.

Congress shall make no law...abridging...the right of the people peaceably to assemble
-First Amendment (thanks, Wikipedia!)

So I guess they claimed it promoted gangs and therefore wasn't a peaceable assembly? Man, I hate it when people use the first amendment to try to get their way; it's always a tenuous connection that makes my head hurt just coming up with it.

They're in jail, they lost their rights when they were tried for their crimes.

While I played some great D&D games in the past, I can't complain about this policy. If you wanted to keep playing your D&D and have all your rights intact, maybe you shouldn't have broken the law and been put in prison. Tough shit. Pay your debt and play to your heart's content when you get released.

It seems so far that everyone here has pointed out that somewhere along the way, these criminals lost their rights when they were convicted of a crime.

I'd like to counter that with the fact that many people end up in jail or prison for breaking unjust laws that shouldn't have been written in the first place.

to quote Tycho in his Penny Arcade post...

"It sucks when the guards are all coming down on your shit, and, like, taking your stuff, but it also sucks pretty bad to be beaten to death with a sledgehammer, which is what this guy did to get in there. Tends to dilute the sympathy"

Fair 'nough. I didn't say THIS guy didn't deserve to be there, but when you apply blanket statements such as, "They're all criminals, they don't have rights," you're taking it too far. Yes, they might have done something wrong, but they're still human beings.

I'll agree with you on drug policy in this country. There is definitely something VERY wrong with a system that gives more time for drug possession than it does for rape. And the inherent vicious circle of shoving nonviolent criminals into a system with violent criminals that ends up turning many nonviolents into violents.
Something about having ten dicks in your ass like the tail of a peacock tends to change a man.
