I bought this for the PC and frankly it looks really stunning. I am fortunate enough to have a really powerful 3d card(5870) and turning everything up to full made this game really really good. The armor designs are truly outdated but then the world is supposed to be very grim and muddy so they fit fine.
I never played the console version so i think I am going to keep buying it on the PC cause even this game has the save carry over feature which should be pretty sweet.

Gameplay>Graphics

So...who gives a shit if it's ugly? It was a fantastic RPG and that's all that really matters.

I have a great PC, I thought the graphics sucked there as well and didn't enjoy the gameplay. It felt like WoW single player. To each their own. I'm not criticizing your decisions so stop being so defensive, if you enjoy it more power to you. Personally I'm sticking with Mass Effect.

with you 100% shadow.

Dragon Age didn't do a damn thing for me. Didn't look great, and the gameplay just didn't thrill me at all.

I loved ME and can't get enough ME2 currently. For the record I loved the elder scrolls series (even oblivion, but morrowind was my fav)

"Gameplay>Graphics"

Therein lies the problem here. Dragon Age's gameplay was based off a 10 year old rpg, where it's been long since surpassed in the combat category. The only thing that kept me going through that game was Bioware's great writing, story, and characters.

Dragon Age had such stellar voice acting, but when someone is getting loud and emotional and their character model's face looks EXACTLY THE SAME at all times, it really takes away from the experience. Every character in every scene looked completely lifeless.

@Arnie (and many others on the page): I have a great PC too, and max out all of DAO's settings with ease, but I would certainly not call this game "stunning" in the graphics department. I wouldn't call them "stunningly bad" either, but it truly is a mediocre game by appearances. User "whymog" below me called the game "drop-dead gorgeous," which is utterly absurd. I feel trolled.

It didn't matter how many CPUs, gigs of memory, or graphic cards you threw at this game... the art style was still stiff-faced rubber dolls glaring straight ahead while whispering sweet nothings or screaming blood oaths of vengeance. Can't change that whether you're running Alienware or Dell.

I know I've said it before, but seriously. graphics were far from the game's worst problem.

here comes all the WHAT ABOUT THE DEEP ENGAGING STORYLINE AND CHARACTERS people who are completely wrong about everything.

luckily mass effect 2 has more or less made up for Badgame: Origins. it also proves the really did just shit that game out as filler.

I'm tired of hearing about how "ugly" Dragon Age was. Yes, it wasn't the "sharpest" texture-wise, but the game had some amazing art direction.

Why doesn't anyone talk about how the lighting and architecture at Ostagaar was amazing?

Why don't people talk about how the use of light sourcing and shading makes simple settings like the interior of a house or the depths of Orzamarr look sublime?

Bioware, please hold off on making awesome new games for awhile. As much as I'd love to play nothing but your games, the other guys need at LEAST a try.

Or keep making awesome games, I don't care. It's really win/win for me either way.

I really don't understand the defense of the PC version of the game. I have a rig that can max out the settings at very high resolutions, but that can't erase the fact that model detail is average, there are serious clipping problems (the clipping on heavy armours drives me nuts), and the characters all look like clones of about half a dozen different (and bland) templates.

The only real difference between the PC and console versions is some higher resolution textures. Nice to be sure, but it doesn't erase the other problems the game has from a graphical standpoint.

All that said, I really do like the game. I hope the sequel does look better, but I'll also still be happy to buy DLC and add-ons for the current game. The graphics really aren't a deal-breaker for me.

Agreed. I have all the respect for this game, but god dammit that clipping armor drives me nuts. I just keep staring at it the entire time, thinking to myself, "HOW DID THEY MISS THIS!!!"

I even think about while not playing, wondering who was in charge that let that slide. Lots to keep track of in a game I guess, clipping armor not the biggest issue, but..URGH!!!

Thank goodness, a game as good as Dragon Age deserves proper attention to it's visuals.

I mean the bows in the game don't even have strings. So you're drawing an arrow against... nothing. It was weird.

why's the console version so bad? :(

i got the ps3 version and got hit by low framerate, washed out textures, jaggies, super narrow draw-in fields, couple of freezes.

these are the bugs that happen to PC games, not a dedicated video game console..... :(

the QA people should have the balls to tell EA or Bioware straight in the face "it's no good enough.... cancel it!"

Its washed out and ugly cause the Ps3 is powered by a meager 512mb 7800GT. Even the 360 has something close to an 8800gts which is still considered 'fairly good'. Sony went all out with 'ZOMG CELL CAN DO IT ALL" when in actual fact, games are far more reliant on GPU muscle which the Ps3 sorely lacks. Hence why games made for both look better on 360. Those symptoms you mention are hardly a problem for people with any sort of good graphics card, and Dragon Age can be run on a 1gb HD4890 maxed out (along with nearly every game ever made, heck i got Crysis: Warhead running maxed on that card at 30fps and i got an oldish CPU). And thats a pretty cheap card now.

Nice try Foetoid, but Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 and other stunningly beautiful PS3 titles show that it's not all up to the Nvidia chip in the PS3.

This is an ugly game on any platform. Textures, crappy character models, clipping, you name it. Sure, it's fun and engaging, but it's not a treat for the eyes and no amount of 1GB SLI graphics cards can fix it, let alone the older chips in consoles.

"gawd-awful graphics"

That's a bit exaggerated. I play the game on a mid-level PC with a Radeon 4850, and it looks pretty good. I mean, the graphics aren't cutting edge but they are more than adequate, and certainly not outright bad.

Man oh man DA is indeed ugly, but it's understandable given its long development cycle. I'm inclined to cut it a lot of slack.

But

Playing it on PC, maxed @1680x1050, it looks like a decent MMO, which is pretty bad. In respects to dynamic lighting and shadows for instance it can't even outclass Neverwinter Nights 2 from how many years ago?

The thing that really baffles me about DA is how many objects in the levels, openable containers for instance, don't accept any environmental lighting whatsoever. The lighting engine as a whole is incredibly basic - with ugly projected shadows for the characters and equally ugly static 'baked' shadows for the environment.

Couple that with inconsistent texture work, barren outdoor environments with minimal grass to cover texture seams and what not (what is this 1999?) and you've got one uninspiring set of visuals - Bioware also still seems to be making their environmental objects too large, which makes the whole affair look clumsy. I mean your bog-standard hut in this game has a door the size of a cathedral that appears to be over a foot thick....yikes. its like fantasy built by playmobile....But still, there's some decent architecture going on here if you look at the big picture. Too bad weapon and armor designs have this hideous, tupperware look going on. I mean the swords look like the plastic he-man toys from the eighties.

And @tmacairjordon87

wait wait what? The combat engine in DA has long since been surpassed? By what? Action games? Jesus, you want all games to play the same don't you. I mean, Bioware's crappy real-time-with-pause combat engines are a big lobotomized step from the turn-based mechanics that can offer true tactical depth - and yet even RTwP isn't contemporary (ie: actiony) enough for you? How exactly are you confusing gameplay style with technology. You think there weren't action games in existence ten years ago?

There are different genres of games for a reason. Variety.

"Dragon Age is, in the structural sense, a fundamentally different game than Mass Effect ... You have to make different technical considerations." Certainly, with Dragon Age: Origins, those considerations were designed to benefit the superior PC version."

Right on the money, Dragon Age is 1st and foremost a PC game and it looks great on the PC at full details with AA and AF cranked up, it sucks that the consoles got a bad version but PCs are already 2 generations beyond the consoles. What did you expect?

Also people who play it at Medium details and say that it looks bad need to upgrade their rig and play at full details before they talk about how bad the graphics look.

I don't think any of the graphic problems outway the quality and time spent on the story line and dialog. thats what kept my attention the most. You can save before a conversation, and go back three or four times and have different outcomes from one conversation. The repetition got annoying from time to time throughout travel and fights.
The story line kept my interest as well with twists and turns that often caught me off guard. the best part is that they have left it plenty evident that no matter what your choices the plot should have a interesting and well connected continuation in DAO 2. It better.
