Ok, first of all:

OOOOOHHHHHH REAAALLLLLYYYY?!
(yes, it's just a bigger iPod Touch)

Second of all:

JC already called Iwata out. Nothing makes anyone look more ridiculous in the gaming market today than the way most Wii games are played.

GAH!

Oh and one more thing....

"Iwata offered few hints as to what new technology would be adopted by Nintendo..."

My guess is going to be a DVD player and 720p resolution.

The future is NOW Nintendo!

You want a good quote, Eagle?

"I question whether those features would be enough to get people to buy new machines," Iwata said, referring to the possible addition of a motion sensor to a new handheld.

What like you did with the Wii after the GC?

When he says "How is that going to look to other people?'',

I'm pretty sure he is not talking about how cool you'll look in front of your awesome bro friends.. Hes talking about what spectators (not wearing the headgear) will see while they watch the SCREEN.. Wasn't that obvious?

Will it be a blurry mess? Probably.

Point taken Twee, but I don't think you can infer that that's what he meant from that statement unless you ask him yourself.

He should've said "How are the games going to look to other people?"

In one statement he's talking about people wearing glasses in their home and in the next he's asking how THAT would look to other people.

It's hard to tell what he meant, really.

His concern is probably what the people without glasses would see. When you come from a company that considers jerking off motions an appropriate type of input are you really going to care how the player looks?

Seems like an odd concern though seeing as when you invest in a 3d setup it'd be unlikely that you'd only have one pair of 3d glasses.

@Cap I don't know about that image, it would imply that the ipad had 4x the power of a iphone/ipod, and even 4 thread multitasking.

+1 for a great photo

Captain,

HAHAHA! That's EXACTLY what I thought of when they announced the iPad. Great pic.

But seriously, there is nothing innovative or new about the iPad. It's simply an unwieldy iPod Touch. Same software, same capabilities as the Touch, now in tablet size, but twice as expensive as and with far less horsepower and capabilities as a real tablet/netbook.

There may be a misunderstanding. I think what Iwata means by "other people" are those who won't have the glasses. It's the same situation we've been hearing for the last few weeks where you have friends come over and not enough glasses to go around.

I'm not mad at it, seems many people are forgetting that an iPod Touch is awesome tech, fun to use and a larger, faster one is cool by me. Remember that the pixel real estate is quadrupled and the multitouch res is great, now across a larger surface. It's so simple to dismiss it as the same thing but even though it is, it's always the software, software, softtware that will wow people. I'm looking forward to what music devs are gonna bring to the iPad, they make some bitchin' sample, synth and recording stuff for the iPhone and the Touch already. Already stoked for the iPad version of the 'Brushes' app.

You're also talking about a 15 year difference in technological advancement. Just because Nintendo couldn't do it doesn't mean no one else can. Especially with today's resources.

The Virtual Boy was also 2ft high, had to be propped up on a surface that your face could comfortably reach, all while you leaned forward and stared at a bunch of RED for a sustained amount of time.

Nevermind that the "system" was only out for such a short period of time that 14 games were released in NA.

Now you tell me which one of those reasons made the Virtual Boy bomb?

Funny, but I don't understand why someone like Iwata is not allowed to think that the virtual boy was stupid too. He wasn't in charge then? You're allowed to not like a technology that is decades old.

I see all the irony, I know, but I found myself agreeing with Iwata. The DS is dated, but the ipad is uninteresting and so are 3D glasses.

It was just a special part of the irony that I had to draw attention to.

In the end, though, I could take 3D gaming either way. I sure as hell won't be investing in it unless it ends up being the norm for consoles in the next generation or two, but even then, I'd be wary about it.

And Iwata being unimpressed by the iPad gaming-wise is definitely easy to understand. There's a lot I could say about the iPad that I don't like, but gaming's definitely the big one.

It's a bigger screen for the games and at a higher price while taking out a feature or two.

Any company that would ever do THAT to us are jerks.=)

I find myself in the odd spot of agreeing with him on these issues. 3D just doesn't feel compelling right now for games and the iPad is missing too much to make it a must have item. Also, I think that Nintendo is in a great spot to judge the impact of 3D and glasses having messed up with the virtualboy. They may not be the same exact items - but the heart of their purpose is akin.

Maybe his comment meant "how is the game on screen going to look to observers" as in it won't be quite the communal / family thing unless everyone is wearing glasses to see what's going on. *shrug* I would hope he doesn't care about the way people look while playing the game because as others have said, you can look pretty ridiculous playing the Wii. Seems like something he would have said about Natal too.

But yea - this will be something Nintendo jumps on after seeing the other guys spend tons of cash on it. Nintendo will wait for the tech to get cheaper and do something with it.

I won't lie, 3D gaming does interest me. However, I'm weary of having to purchase more devices to "enhance" my gaming experience. Iwata's comments are somewhat hypocritical when you take into consideration his comments on motion control and similar devices. I think his comments regarding the iPad/3D gaming are his form of "playing it close to the chest".

Joystiq and it's commenters have an anti-Nintendo quota to meet everyday WRE. You know that.

Had, say, Peter Moore made these exact sentiments, it'd be framed in gold and heralded as one of Joystiq's top ten quotes of 2010 or some shit.

You're very much correct on that, Cap. Iwata is very cautious about this sort of thing, not too hasty to dismiss the technology outright, but not trying to play up something that his analysts/R&D people have recommended against.
