Because wearing glasses is somehow more silly than flapping your arms around like a raving lunatic?

Someone care to explain that logic to me?

I wear PERSCRIPTION glasses wen I play video games, what would be the difference? And obviously, I see Iwata does too.... So how can he expect to be taken seriously?

Glasses wearers should be able to see that line of reasoning more clearly than others, i think. Glasses on glasses is quite unpleasant. I remember that from woodshop in the 8th grade, before i switched to contacts.

People who actually wave their arms around like an arse while playing Wii games ARE lunatics. Obviously the term's an exaggeration and I never take anyone who talks about Wii games like that seriously. Still, 3D glasses or no, I have yet seen reason for 3D anything. Having to lean left and right to see the 3D effects in a film, game or TV show...It's best you went to see a movie in production and walk around the set as it's being filmed. 3D in gaming would also be a distraction. Especially to new gamers. You'll be with your friend playing a game and they'll want to pause just to get up and walk around the TV going OOH! AAAH! People like to sit in one place to watch TV and play games. It's simply unnecessary.

Of course journalists are gonna ask Iwata's opinion on 3D and the iPad, and his responses don't surprise me. With the DSi XL, he was trying to tap into a market that Nintendo new existed because of their extensive polling of Japanese customers, and trends such as the elderly playing the DS, and gamers playing handhelds at home where others may like to look on.

The DSi is an *alternative* product to a co-existing extremely successful product, and Nintendo only ever marketed it as such. It's not meant to be a major revelation, the future of handheld gaming technology, or any such nonsense. So him being unimpressed by the unveiling of the iPad -- and perhaps the manner in which it was done -- does not Iwata a hypocrite make.

As for 3D gaming, I enjoy dabbling with it on a PC, but as we all know, Nintendo has targetted the living room. They excel at local multiplayer gaming from both a game design and sales standpoint (look at major Wii hits from Wii Sports to Mario Party 8 to Mario Kart to Wii Sports Resort to New Super Mario Bros. Wii), so from that perspective it may be unfeasible to get a room full of people turned on to the idea of all wearing glasses and playing a 3D multiplayer game, and even less interesting to on-lookers who aren't wearing said glasses.

"Can you imagine standing on a board and flapping your arms like a giant bird -- with glasses on? Humiliating."

JC. You just made me spit tea all over my monitor. Well done!!!!

Who isn't unimpressed with the iPad?

It's the iPhone rehashed for the third time now. Sure it can't make calls, but it's still the same thing. I really hope the iBrand fails with this so Apple can realize they can't market the same product under different names forever. You can't remake the same thing over and over and call that innovation, eventually you need to make something that's original and pushes things forwards.

I don't think there's anything impressive about the iPad when I'd be willing to put money on it that the Zune HD refresh this year with the new Tegra chip is going to be more powerful then it.

Lmfao. Yea, the marketshare is not huge but I know a handful of people who have Zunes, myself included. I didn't get a Zune HD though, because I needed more space. I found a new Zune 120 off eBay for $200, which is a shit load more space then the 8GB or 16GB I'd get with a comparably priced Zune HD or iPod Touch. But I digress.

I certainly doubt that Nintendo would want to get into 3D, given that the auspices of 3D are pretty much the same as HD. They make the picture better, but what does it really do for the experience? (and being in HD isn't what makes PS360 games look so much better as much as the expanded traditional graphical power, i stand by that assertion).

He would be quick to dismiss the iPad, though, as that's where he's really going to have to fight to fulfill Nintendo's master plans regarding handhelds in the West, where it's still taboo to be seen playing a handheld.

Considering that this is the same guy who has also rejected:

- Online Gaming
- HD Gaming
- Downloadable Content
- Downloadable Games
- HD Formats
- AND violent games

I don't think he deserves to have his opinion looked upon as credible ever, ever again.

Yeah, considering that the market has declared that they don't need any of those things, it really isn't that stupid. Such things are nice, but ultimately unnecessary

3D in theaters is different - everyone is provided with glasses, and you don't need to buy a special piece of hardware for your living room or sign up for 3D content to have an enjoyable experience.

And the whole iPhone / iPad argument is stupid. The past successes of products that brought a lot of new stuff to the table do not gaurantee the future success of this tablet, which has negligable overall purpose. By your logic, Apple could release *anything* to mediocre response, and you could argue that it will turn into gold.

We've all seen the relative failure of Apple TV and MacBook Air. Apple can't score a home run with every product - no company can. Try not to get your feelings hurt about it.

Nintendo has never rehashed an old product in new packaging, nope, not at all. That's almost like saying the DSi XL is just a bigger DSi...wait...

The Ipad definately seems overrated so far. As for 3D gaming, I don't think I could ever get into it. In addition to the new systems, I heard that you would also have to buy a whole new television with 3D capabilities. Can enough people actually afford it for it to catch on?

I think Iwata's point is that at least they admit the XL is just a bigger DSi. They're not going "omg look at this bigger ds its SOOOOO INNOVATIVE!!"

you know, apple should really rip on the fact that for the last 5 years the DS has been cosmetically redone so many times yet its the same damn hardware! sony too heres another ironic point, people ripped on the DSI for having a shitty camera, yet people are ripping on the fact the ipad doesnt have one! and i am boggled why the thing (ipad) needs one serioiusly! apple isnt stupid, they will put it on in the next version after all the dumbasses buy this version
