Let me tell you something. It's rough being one of the few Joystiq editors that isn't currently knee-deep in the space-faring magic of Mass Effect 2. The constant insults, the pointing and laughing, the threats on my life; it gets old really fast. And now Electronic Arts has to announce that Mass Effect 2 has already shipped two million units worldwide in its first week. The press release also notes that the game has earned more than 40 perfect review scores. And, of course, the Joystiq review drips with effusive, well-earned praise. I get it, okay? I need to play it, and I will, just as soon as I finish the first Mass Effect.
Oh, gotta go. Looks like Justin is putting another stink bomb in my lunch box.

Going by this numbers ME2 is going to sell way more than ME1, which sold around 2.5 million. This means a lot of players just skipped the first, but isn't the continuity what ME is all about?
Posted: Jan 29th 2010 3:55PM AsherR said
Well they do a good job in ME2 telling you what you need to know from ME1 in my opinion. All of the back story is still nice, but I think if someone isn't interested in ME1 then they should still at least play 2.
But as a story nerd, I need to have all of the back story from both games. :)

2 million SHIPPED is NOT 2 million SOLD. Call me when you SELL 2 million because that is when it will be news.

Let's pretend that within the next few weeks it surpasses 2 million SOLD. Then what will your response be? Will you come back out from under the bridge with some other lame comment?

Did anyone read the article?
"Game Earns Rave Reviews, Sells 2 Million Units in Week One"
I'm confused... shipped or sold? IGN says sold... Looks like Joystiq is the only one who calls it "shipped"?
And if that's the case,

Looks like they crafted a great shooterpg and I'm glad they're being rewarded with success at retail. I'd expect it to be in the 4-5 MIL range globally for it's lifetime. Maybe even a PS3 version down the line as well. Makes sense financially.
Congrats BiowarEA you deserve it.

I've still not beaten Dragon Age, Assassin's Creed 2, or Mass Effect 2. I'm partly into each of their stories. This is a hell of a good time to be a gamer.

It may be a great game for 1 person per household, but every other kid only gets a second rate experience, because EA assigns the Cerebrus network to ONLY one user. Of course you can buy another license for the 2nd and 3rd person in your family for a mere 1200 points each.
EA are crooks and bullies, and I will not purchase a single piece of DLC from them ever again if this is going to be the future of EA games.
This is a case of DRM gone mad!!
Microsoft, you need to force publishers to at least respect the 1 download 1 console rule!!

i get your problem.
but if you don't care about profiles and acheivments. you can use one account and just have multiple play throughs. no need to get multiple copies of the dlc.

My God, the power of Microsoft. Now this how you sell a game folks.

I think my only complaint about the game thus far is that I absolutely hate the system they've set up to scan planets. There's virtually no tutorial and the scanner moves like molasses.
Posted: Jan 29th 2010 4:45PM (Unverified) said
There is a reserach upgrade you can get for the scanner.

It got annoying after a while as some planet require 10+ probes to strip mine.
on another note i going for completionist but i finding i am having more of a lack funds being my problem rather than resources is there something that requires lots of minerals. because i think i am at the 150,000+ level of minerals. i want to know if strip mining every planet is waste of time or if there is something at the end that you supergrade your ship or something

BioWare deserves every penny they make out of this wonderful amazing game. To bad my experience with this game will be short; GOW3 comes out in March.

I feel sad that you're going to cut short your time with such a wonderfully unique and personalized experience like Mass Effect 2 for such an overblown gore-and-tit-fest. Well, it shouldn't take you that long, I guess. You just press "x" to win for like 6 hours, right?

I had heard the actual sales were 500k or so, but shipped copies are pretty much all sold eventually, which would put this game level with its predecessor
A handy performance.

Who doesn't care about profiles and achievements, come on, be realistic. I'm already having to pay for 3 XBLA accounts per year, just because of achievements alone.
Up until this game, every piece of DLC has been associated 1st with the console, and secondly to the account used to pay for the content, and I have a lot of content. This attempt at extortion by EA is outrageous, I understand them trying to limit the used game market, but not family members in a single home at the time of purchase. EA have truly soured me to their entire line of games with this one. Lets add up the issues I have with EA.
1) They don't respect a parents decision to allow 13 years and below access to multiplayer content
2) They shut down servers to older sports titles to force you to upgrade
3) They are now trying to make parents buy multiple copies of the same content for each child in the house, who just happens to like to maintain his/her own identity.
4) They charge for cheat access to their own games, sure you get access to content that may have been unlocked earlier in the game, but other developers give you the same stuff using the ubiquitous cheat codes.

...in other words ME2s sales on 360 and PC in its first week outsold the combined 360, PS3, and PC sales of Dragon Age?
Remind me again why we're getting a Dragon Age 2...

1) technically it's not sales, it's shipped, though i'm sure all of those will be sold in no time at all and
2) shut your damn mouth, dragon age was a great game. mass effect 2 may sell more but dragon age sold well in its own right. if all developers stopped making games because another game would sell more, then we'd all be left with no games in the wake of modern warfare 2.

@ David
I'm just saying. You put the number of people who *asked* for Bioware to revert to an 11 year old formula and base a game off of it to the amount of people who wanted a sequel to Mass Effect and they don't even remotely compare. Take the sales of Dragon Age into account, the game based on the 11 year old Baldur's Gate formula, and I just don't get why ME3 and Swotor aren't getting more attention and why we need DA2.
Why can't you farm that off to some like Obsidian? You had no problem letting Lucas Arts farm Kotor II off to them, and Kotor I was a better received and better selling game then Dragon Age and it only originally launched on one platform.

You're complaining about ME3 not getting attention, when the the second one just bloody came out?
And Old Republic will be getting plenty of attention, trust me. It's still a year out at least, so we wouldn't want an over saturation. As far as DA2 goes, all we've heard is basically "Yeah, we're making it. It's prettier."

Saria, to put it simply: you are absolutely wrong about ME1. You want to skip it, that's fine, but you are missing out on one of the best Sci-Fi stories ever.
It doesn't matter what ME2 does better, the story in ME1 is still incredible and playing ME2 without the full story means you... aren't getting the full story.
