Because the Dante's Inferno marketing department obviously knows what it's doing, IndustryGamers reports that EA bought up some ad time during next month's Super Bowl, presumably in the hopes that some of the people watching will care enough to pick up the game when it's releases two days later. We have to wonder how many of these sports-watching people -- who are ostensibly not as interested in 14th century epic poetry -- will care about a guy with a self-inflicted sewing nightmare on his chest waging war through Hell.
So, here's ample warning. When your parents inevitably drag you over to your uncle's house to watch the San Bernardino Flim-Flams take on the Texarkana Whatsits, and your little cousin -- you know, the one way too into Dashboard Confessional with the closet full of long-sleeve shirts with thumb holes cut out -- sees the ad and goes bananas, know that Joystiq gave you the heads up. We love you like that.

Calling it, Dante will be dressed up like Brett Favre and will be slicing Tom Brady's face off with a sharpened football. Since they are being so faithful to the book, I'm sure that's in there somewhere.

Hopefully it'll be as good as the Killzone 2 ad last year

I can also say I watched the entire game and there was no KZ2 ad, the ad you're thinking of was just a normal tv ad

Yeah I just looked it up, you're right. Though that commercial did play around that time of year.

I've heard people saying they're sending that game off to die against God of War 3. If they're willing to lay the money down for a Super Bowl ad, I'm not so sure.

Yeah, but God of War is already an extremely established franchise and is gonna sell either way.

The greatest irony would be if the Dante's Inferno ad led into the Tim Tebow ad.

Haha, the whole hell thing is cool, but after playing the demo, I've determined what game really deserves my money. March 16 can't come soon enough.

I was really looking forward to this game until I played the demo. I just couldn't get over how close it was to God of War... combat, music, set pieces, controls, game mechanics, and even the story felt similar. But that beast ridding bit at the end was just too much.

And God of War was a lot like Devil May Cry, so? God of War is basically it's own genre by now.
"even the story felt similar"
You do realize it's based off of a book, right?

I keep hearing this, but I'm still confused as to why it's considered a bad thing. God of War is awesome, so why is god of war with a scythe somehow bad?

Altho its true, its REALLY similiar to GoW 3, its a good pickup when the game gets discounted by june or so. Unless you are a 360 owner... then u can buy it on march and pretend u are playing God of War.
@Traceur, yes GoW was SIMILAR to DMC. Dante's Inferno is IDENTICAL to GoW. Its not bad i LOVE this kinds of games, thats why i have Bayonetta, Darksiders, will get Dante's on 360 (and then buy it on june or july) and GoW III

@ CaramelZappa - It is beyond me also. I wasn't sure about DI but after playing the demo I will definatley be getting this game. I think most are butt hurt over DI because X360 owners will not just get a taste, but will have a nigh on 100% of the awesome gameplay that was once only exclusive to PS3 owners (and yes, I am a PS fanboy...just not the blind, rediculous kind). Being against DI for its similarity to GOW is like a DMC fan not wanting to buy Bayonetta because its basically a DMC clone. Whats really funny is that (unless there are technical issues) DI has to potential out sell GOW3 buy a great margin. If all PS3 GOW fans buys a copy (which I don't see why they wouldn't) and X360 owners get hooked (the same way GOW hooked most ps3owners)...Dante's Inferno is going to rain on alot of narrowminded fanboy's parade.

Look, I enjoyed God of War. I thought it was highly overrated, and found DMC to be much more entertaining the first time around. Mind you there was about a 5 year age gap, so my tastes may have just changed, but I played the DI demo and all I could think of was that it felt like God of War 2.5 and looked like a hi-res PS2 game. For a next-gen game, nothing in that demo looked like it was remotely taxing for the 360. It looked tremendously worse when I played the Bayonetta demo immediately afterwards.
If you've played the GOW games and watched a GOW3 video or played the demo, DI is definitely a step back. At most it's a pail imitation of GOW 2. I mean the whole fighting Death thing just seemed like a cheap way to make us believe that Dante's even half as badass as Kratos. I mean he got taken out by some random hobo ninja. I still don't know why the hell he stiched the cross into his chest before going home. He was disenchanted with the church, sure, but did he really think Beatrice would find it sexy?
People don't like DI not because 360 has a GOW-esque experience. It's that it doesn't even attempt to outdo GOW on any level.

Sorry I didn't mean to turn this into a console argument. That was not my intention at all.
I didn't think the game was horrible. I just felt like I played it before. It's not a bad thing at all, but at the same time I guess I was expecting the game to distinguish itself more. If I buy/play a new game, I expect a new experience. Being similar in genre or style is one thing, but I think it crossed the similar line and moved in to clone territory.
But again, this is just my opinion.

Bastardization of the original story and copying God of War aside (oh, and the "WE'RE SO EDGY KILL BABIES"), Dante's Inferno doesn't seem that bad. I'd honestly like to play, and I don't even like most games.

I don't know about anyone else, but I played the demo and GREATLY enjoyed it. And so what if it rips off of God of War? I love God of War and I've played both of them to exhaustion. So why shouldn't I play a game that's equally awesome in gameplay but offers a different and interesting story with equally interesting level design?
Bash it all you want for ripping on God of War, but I'm not going to condemn, nor am I going to pass up a great game just because it's a "clone". And by the way, Darksiders says "Hello" and that game was also a lot of fun.

I agree, the demo was AWESOME. I personally never played a GOW game, so this control system was new to me, and I really enjoyed it. I also really liked how seamless the gameplay way. NO loading screens and it looked PHENOMENAL. I don't know what everyone is complaining about, I'm with you on this one.

Surprising EA is dropping so much markething into a game that really isn't very good (based on the demo).

Ea has made some of the dumbest decisions for the games that really need the publicity, and instead want to waste money promoting this peice of crap. The demo was complete garbage, and a total God of War rip-off! They didn't even try to hide the similarities!

So if they're SO similar and DI is just a GoW ripoff, but DI is a piece of garbage (according to you), what makes GoW NOT a piece of garbage?
I mean, you know, since they're the same game?

The game tries to be gratuitous, graphic, and controversial not because it adds to the atmosphere or the story, but because they desperately want you to ignore that the game just isn't very good compared to other God of War and Devil May Cry knock offs.
Spending money on a superbowl ad isn't going to change that. Seems like with all the marketing around this game since it's very announcement that there is more riding on it's success than we may know.

See now look, and don't get me wrong because I'm not defending the game so much as I'm defending sheer logic. But when you say,
"The game tries to be gratuitous, graphic, and controversial not because it adds to the atmosphere or the story, but because they desperately want you to ignore that the game just isn't very good compared to other God of War and Devil May Cry knock offs."
Then could you PLEASE explain to me wtf God of War has been doing all these years? Because let's be real here, God of War didn't get all of it's attention because it's a marvel of gameplay design. It got all of it's attention because it's a ruthless, gorey, high action game that has Kratos ripping people in half and dismembering bodies (and body parts) at the push of a (or several) buttons.....over and over again. Just like D.I.
And again, don't get me wrong, I LOVE God of War, but as a stated below this post, if Dante's Inferno is "more or less the same game" as everyone's been saying, then WHY is it so bad?

@Storm Eagle
Read my above comment.
If EA had made this game sometime between the release of GOW1 and 2 or even shortly after GOW2, I would be fine. Heck even had it been released as a 360 launch game, it may have been acceptable. The problem for me at least is that DI feels and looks like a last gen game. I've seen little to indicate why this couldn't be the original Xbox's GOW other than that system being in last place for the previous generation.

God of War is gratuitous and violent for sure, but it's also a lot of fun. It's like a Frank Miller comic book brought to life. Every few minutes a giant "holy crap, no way I can beat that thing" monster attacks. The first God of War has you fighting a giant hydra in the opening act.
I found the Dante's Inferno demo to be boring and repetitive. Kill the grim reaper by doing the same repetitive combo for 15 minutes so you can go fight skeletons just didn't have the same visceral feel. It had all the elements of God of War, gameplay mechanic + myth + gore, but none of the magic where it all works together. It just isn't a strong game, especially after Darksiders and Bayonetta released recently. Those two games worked for me.
